A bit cringy but not nearly as bad as peoehete are making out.

It's what he does in the ring that matters at this early stage of his UFC career.

He looked decent enough the weekend. Might well make the top ten at some stage but lots of work ahead to make himself a contender.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

That's the thing though, isnt it? It's what he does in the ring that matters and what he's doing in the ring is extremely ordinary.

He squeaked a decision against an unranked opponent on Saturday but he's acting like he's about the smash Usman and trying to get Ole Oles going in a room with no Irish people in it!

It's easy to get behind a bit of warrented hype. And it's easy to get behind a good fighter with humility.

But when the bravado doesn't match the skills......... it's going to rub people up the wrong way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He was up against a dangerous fighter and got a 30-27 decision win, shows he's smart.

As I said the aftermath was a bit cringy but he's excited after a win so you have to take that into account.

  • Registered Users Posts: 345 ✭✭orecir

Can't criticise Gary at all for his performance. A very mature and controlled performance.

The lad may be beyond cringey but he does have talent. Have an awful feeling though as already seen he will be rushed to the top and be exposed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

What does being excited after a win have to do with it? He must be walking around in a constant state of excitement in that case because he's been doing and saying the same stuff for months now.

There's a disconnect between his talent and his idea of himself at the moment. Maybe he'll prove us all wrong, but he does himself no favours by acting like a world-destroyer when he's eeking decisions against lads with 0-1 UFC records on the prelims.

    Conor McGregor 2.0 he aint!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

You'd swear nobody else was at it. The majority of them talk the big talk. Don't be getting your knickers in a twist over something so trivial.

He did what Chimaev's coach wanted Chimaev to do - fight smart.

He's young and learning at an elite gym. He has good size and a great engine which is always a handy starting point.

If he had got involved in a fist-fight shootout we'd be sitting here typing about what a fool he is and that he doesn't have it upstairs to make it.

Who knows how high his ceiling will be but two wins on two stacked numbered events along with the UFC clearly fancying him... he's on the pig's back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Whether other people do it is immaterial. This is the Ian Garry thread, so we're discussing Ian Garry doing it.

Also, other people doing it does not make it right. If others were doing it, they'd be rightly criticised also.

He's saying how everyone is going to call him daddy........ there's been nothing in his first two UFC performances to show that he won't be made into minced-meat by anyone in the Top 10.

Proof in the pudding , all you lot talking about him

Another irish fighter on soon and it is quiet

There's no proof he will be either. He seems to have a decent defense against everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,281 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

He’s 24 years old and has only had nine fights.

Was a Cage Warriors champion after seven fights running through them with five finishes.

He is in one of the best camps in the world with a lot of the top ranked UFC Welterweights to be learning from.

Some of his talk feels forced and is cringey but he’s seen the blueprint laid down before him. Staying quiet doesn’t get you pushed, look how long it’s taken Arnold Allen or Leon Edwards to get the credit they deserve. The UFC clearly like him putting him on two numbered ppvs so he should take advantage of it while he can.

Talk of top 10 fighters is ridiculous. Give him decent match ups and a few years to mature and develop his skill set. It’s great for us to have another Irish fighter in the UFC to root for as it’s been slim pickings for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

The "but you're talking about it, so it's working" stuff is old and played out. Proper barstool stuff.

At the end of the day, us talking about him is not going to go any way towards him being able to back up what he is saying.

Us talking about him is not going to stop him being pulled apart by the Khamzats, Colbys and Usmans of the world.

In his mind, he's the next Conor McGregor. In reality, there are 3-4 people talking about him on a thread with 60 posts in six months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Anyone any thoughts on how the fight the weekend will go ,

Bit mad that Ian see's himself as the next " McGregor " and hasn't been a peep in this thread since April .,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,518 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Nothing “mad” about it. It’s completely expected that he isn’t nearly as relevant as McGregor. Not nearly as skilful, and waaaaay too forced in his carry-on. And he never makes the front pages of the papers, but that’s a blessing, not a curse.

I wish him well though, hope he can carve out a decent career for himself. I’m 99% percent sure he’s a significantly better person than McGregor (it’d be difficult not to be) so he has that going for him at least.

It says it all though that I didn’t even know he was fighting this weekend until this thread was bumped, and I’m surely not the only one.

    A good win for him,

Done well against a very tough guys

One thing what's the crack with the new name i thought the wife's surname was Lee?

She's Layla machado Garry now, he's Ian Garry Machado. They'd make ya sick haha

    The UFC obviously like him.

    I like him too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 190 ✭✭PatrickDoherty

McGregor tweeted him last fight saying ya little daisy and he got a daisy tattoo'd on him pmsl hes not playing with the full deck hes to be pitied.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Strange she was always Layla Ann Lee

Her ex husband name is Cullen

Wonder why all of a sudden Machado became her name

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

He's a great prospect but seems fans haven't really taken to him, Very little engagement about him anywhere on social media, Even here very little posts after another win,

Actually most of us just wondering about the name change

Something to do with her other kid and they all wanted to have the same name.

TBH he comes across like somebody doing a bad impression of James Gallagher, he wasn't like that 2 years ago. He was brash but not terribly cringey the way he is now. Rogan did him a huge favour by not interviewing him after his win last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He's a very smart fighter, using his strengths and avoiding the opposition's strengths. He has a good team in his corner and he listens to them. It'll be interesting to see how far he gets.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,222 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Would Gallagher have gotten the events and headlines if he didnt talk the way he did? More than likely not, that's why so many fighters do that now. Garry's still a young lad so is still finding his feet here.

Also he'll struggle to make a fan base in Ireland like the previous Irish fighters have because he's not based here. A lot of those guys came up together and arrived almost as one package. The guys that have come after are coming by themselves and that's going to be a lot harder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭rob316

He hurt his marketability I think by leaving Tom and Chris, he's obviously in a fantastic gym now but he lost that Irish attraction to him like McGregor had by going to the US. McGregor still has that thing to him where he lives and trains in Dublin, a global superstar but Irish all the way so you will have lads taking out loans to go see him in Vegas and sing Ole Ole Ole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I think its more to do with his personality to be honest,

He's like a pound land McGregor with the stuff he says & then there is the cringe fest with this missus,

It's like he's the first lad to ever have wife the way he goes on , but you can bet your last Euro that because she wants it that way

Poor chap comes across like he's got Stockholm Syndorme

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It's interesting that he goes on about family. I think it'll appeal to lots of casual fans if he can maintain a 'clean cut' image. It might make him a lot of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

So how long we reckon before Gary is giving a live top 15 or 10 opponent

Looking at the rankings ,he will have a very hard time getting a win, t ,

Guys like Brady , Rakhamov are only scratching top 10,

Wonder boy ( nearly time to give up) might be a good bet for the first big name for him to face or Magny ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I think they'll take their time with him and build his reputation.

3-0 in the UFC and still only 24.

I suspect another 2/3 fights and he'll tuck into the top 15. I think Dana will ease him in as I think he sees $$$ in him.

All progressing well, by the end of 2023/start of 2024 I could see him dusting off the likes of Jingliang, Magny, Chiesa.

Stylistically, I think himself and Wonderboy would be a great matchup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I'm thinking 2 more fights and then someone washed up but a big name like Robbie Lawler. Beat a legend, get that profile up then start hitting the top 15. WW is pretty average outside the Top 5 so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him pick up wins against ranked opponents.

Brady & Rakhamonov are 10 & 9 and would absolute merk him .,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,659 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I think any top 15 fighter beats him at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

First post on Ian in 6 months not quite the McGregor he thinks he is,

I see he has fight v Spng Kenan coming up who's coming off a loss that was nearly two years ago ,,

Seems UFC don't have much fate in Garry to match him against anyone of note ,

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭robwen

Only on the early prelims this weekend at UFC 285, at least it should be on at a decent time to watch here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,281 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

    He’s 25 with 10 fights.

No rush, take another 2-3 fights before a top 15 opponent maybe late next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Ye that is true , the WW tend to be late 20's before exploding ,

Top 15 is full of killers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,258 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Watched a couple of videos of him over the last couple of days. Latest one was from MMA on Point where we went through the Top 10 at Welterweight.

He's quite difficult to like. Comes across horribly obnoxious and manages to turn anything he talks about around to talking about himself. I don't mind a bit of confidence but the complete lack of humility rubs me up the wrong way.

I like how UFC are giving him the chance to find his feet and put him against lads he should be expected to beat, like this chap tomorrow, but I think he's in big trouble if he ever gets anyone form the Top 10

I know his family but not him & they are all really good genuine people but i agree he comes across very unlikable ,

He really really wants to be liked & i think people pick up on that & go the other way,

i hope the lad does well for himself & gets a win the weekend,

Getting dropped like that will probably do him no harm in the long term. Wasn't completely cringe on the mic after either. Win-win

He impressed me last night. It appears he has a high fight iq. I love the way he mixes it up.

I agree that the adversity he faced in the first round will only help him. He did very well to survive it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Good win but let's be real Song wad out in there to get kids, Same way he did in his last fight 2 years ago , Garry needs to tighten up his defence

His first UFC fight he got cuaght a few times by the left hook & again last night

He got hurt bad and recovered well, fingers crossed he can keep improving

He wants to fight in 5 weeks , I'm not sure that advisable after being dropped like that,

  • Registered Users Posts: 607 ✭✭✭rondog

I cringe every time i see hear him speak, he has no charisma and looks like an attention seeking gobsh1te along with his 'world look at me' wife.

All his talk of lust for violence rubbish just makes him look like a complete tw@t

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,034 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He's taking it from McGregor's persona. It just doesn't come across as genuine.

I like the guy despite that. It's clear he is a hard worker and listens to his coaches. I hope he has a great career. I don't know anything about his partner apart from.her being much older than him and them having a child. I don't care to know either, I'm only concerned about what happens in the ring. I try to avoid information about their personal lives but unfortunately sometimes it's impossible to not see things come up about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I hope he does well too but my god the lad is cringe,

Agree with the above.Listen hes a young Irish lad and I hope he represents us well and continues the surge in Irish MMA but wish someone would have a word in his ear to stop all the rubbish talk, try be funny and have a bit of craic just the standard Irish sense of humour and he will have the plastic paddies salivating and spending big money supporting him and filling his pockets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I add his break down of why he got caught is also just wrong ,He claims its because he threw a hook to the body but if you watch he actually threw a jab after that ,

The issue wasn't the hook itself it was the fact he threw two left handed shot in a row with his right hand completely down & not covering the right side , Something he done twice on his debut UFC fight but the shot he got caught with didn't put him over, He's a t the right camp to put that right ,they will notice that and try there best to drill it ou of him ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

the only problem is you cant really coach or train someone to be charismatic, his personality is developed at his age and he is going to be stuck like that.

a rather unlikeable fellow i must agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,859 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Its strange isn't it , the lad has done nothing wrong but people just can't seem to take to him ,

I wonder is it only Irish people who see that, , he seems to try way to hard ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,442 ✭✭✭weemcd

He doesn't actually listen to his coaches though, was removed from Team KF for exactly that, being arrogant and uncoachable.

I wanted to like this lad but every single time I hear him speak I like him less.
