No idea, just lads who would have their ear closer to the ground AC wise have said it will have the DAS.

if a CASA 295 M it will be the “military” variant of the aircraft? Re Baldonnel they will need to start investing in the facilities there, there is some land there that can be developed

There is a chance for a short period of time we could have 5 irish Casas operating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,243 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    Operable? Maybe.

    Operating? Absolutely not.

We have scarcely enough crew for 2, let alone 5.

The 235s will be put out of use as soon as their respective replacements in the MPA role arrive.

If the M version Transporter is coming, it still won't be for a while and crewing will have to be addressed pending its arrival.

Hopefully more planning than when we got P64 unplanned…

I agree, the big issue across all arms of the DF is IMO the ability to have the necessary resources to crew aircraft / planes etc and to maintain them … the recruitment targets of 3k net additional is pie in the sky unfortunately… moving to fighter aircraft needs to be seen in that context, we are a relatively low tech airforce using mainly civilian level equipment, with pretty much the similar engine across most aircraft. While not impossible, a move to jets is a serious level change … a long way off

This where the defence forces need to he smart with resouces such as moving cathal brugha out to casement so admin and security duties can be eased up. If possabile not having any air corps Technians doing any barrack duites .

Who said the functions of Cathal Brugha Barracks were being moved to Casement Aerodrome?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,568 ✭✭✭sparky42

I presume it’s in case Eamon and the Greens get their way eventually and the barracks in city centre are given over to development, though as I’ve said before long term the Dublin councils are looking at Baldonnel as well… Easier to build a political narrative that the DF don’t need the land rather than face down the forces that have screwed up the existing housing stock and future developments in the city.

Its an if But long term Cathal Brugha will be going 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,243 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    Not 100% by any means.

If McKee becomes national Army Headquarters under the re-org, as has been discussed, it won't have the space to accommodate its HQ functions and host all the Dublin security functions that are currently split between it and CB.

Now, there certainly isn't room for all that in Casement either, so it's either a reworking of Cathal Brugha or a greenfield site, which seems excessive.

With regard to the Greens' interest in the site for public housing, I can see FF/FG ensuring that no decision is made on that before this Dáil ends and before this coalition Government goes its separate ways.

Over the Last year would Flight & Ground Crews of being undertaking training programmes with Airbus ahead of the new 295s deliverys?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,243 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Theres a project team who will 'train the trainers'. A number of personnel will go to Airbus for training and in turn deliver the conversion programme at Base. The current 235 flyers should be good to go right away.

Hopefully with the PC-12s now well embedded in the Utility/ISR role and the two brand new MPAs due shortly, the 295W will be able to be utilised in a pattern more suited to its profile and that will give it a long service life.

With the lack of media coverage of the tender award being confirmed they could have ordered a A400m

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,243 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

The media never cover the Tender award, only the decision. And in this case, it was even less noteworthy than usual, because the decision only involved the extension of a prior award.

Also, many journalists appear to need a story to be handed to them. Not many would be perusing tender websites as a matter of course.

And if they are, its only in respect of dog whistle stuff like migrant accommodation.

You can be sure this aircraft will provide great service to the state over the next few decades, like the current CASAs it will be run virtually into the ground (or is it the air??) … indeed it will probably be the case we could use more, and perhaps with a greater military utility, but you have to start somewhere

West coast maritime surveillance should in a rational world is already, and should become even more important for us in the years ahead … obviously the current fisheries, drugs, coast guard activity piece, but if all the big talk about off shore wind and sub sea cables and their strategic impact for the EU etc comes to pass, a lot more time will or should be patrolling those assets … pulling what is already a limited number of aircraft off to do other (albeit important) taskings in terms of transport etc elsewhere is a load of cod … we either do the thing right and put the resources into it or just do as we have done for ever -hope we get lucky and the Brits out of their own national keep an eye on ours … so I agree buy two, even a decent second hand craft could be picked up for handy money.

Why not do all of these tasks with drones. A lot cheaper and more effective. No?

Terrible. How long are the repairs likely to take?

I would say who ever took the photos that are floating around online will be looking for a new job shortly

I saw some of the images over on another website. Looks like the PC-12 involved, 283, is going to need a completely new horizontal stabiliser. The electronics/sensor pod on top of the vertical stabiliser seems to be undamaged though, at least to my untrained eye. The CASA seems to have come off lightly by comparison.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

At least with a fleet of four PC-12s, disruption to operations should not be too significant. The IT's use of the term "crash" is inappropriate in an aviation context, IMO.

Would there be insurance on the aircraft or does the repair bill just come out of the O&M Budget?
