Given the long standing hostility towards buying any such capability getting 1 its pretty much all we could hope for, just enough for a future minister to say "we can do something" for the next evacuation we have.

I’m as cynical as the next one, but it is a step change in terms of dedicated capability for the Aer Corps. While it falls short of ‘what might have been’ I do wish those that will fly it and be flown in her all the best. We can be sure the maximum of value will be drawn from it, as per all DF equipment.

The c295 programme points to the inherent cost of equipping our services (€0.3 billion) - to the bare minimum level and indeed more complex, full military spec platforms will be dearer again. It will be interesting to hear if the mooted Baldonnel redevelopment programme is announced in the near future. This will bring the airfield up to the necessary modern level, including a few hangars to store this gear.

We can't be sure maximum value will be drawn from these planes at all, not when we don't have a full roster of pilots and crew to man them.

Just look at the two C295 MPAs, one of them has effectively been laid up either in Ireland or back in Spain for over half its service life.

A service life of less than 2 years so far, they are going to be flying for 30+ years.

Rather than possibly splitting the casa " fleet " , would it be worth planning to long term base all 3 casa's in Shannon - their crews and service techs as well ? ,

I've zero idea of what sort of shift patterns aer corp staff work , so it may not work to bus guys from baldonnel to Shannon ..

    They are.

How long has the Air Corps been in a staffing crisis to a greater or lesser degree so far? 10 years.

The Casement Masterplan when completed will give a good idea long term what the olan is for aircraft locations
