Recently I've noticed a strong smell of sewage/sewer gas in back garden when WC is flushed in the house.

Have noticed this for some time. House is 20 years old and in an estate.

Does this require investigation by a plumber or is there an easy fix?

Have you lifted any AJs to see if there's any backing up?

    I'd start there

There should be covers somewhere from sewage pipe from your toilet(s) to the main sewer on your property. Might be under gravel or ...

Probably a blockage. You might be able to unblock with a hose pipe or sewer rods. Be careful with the sewer rods that they don't become undone and stuck too. You need to keep rotating them in the right direction..

A drain cleaning service can unblock for about 100 quid. Not a plumber, a plumber will cost more and probably harder to come by.

Also, get it unblocked on a weekday and not on a bank holiday weekend, when it'll cost more. Get it sorted soon 🙂

... unless there is structural damage in the pipes.

Thanks for the advice. Will get a drain cleaning company to investigate.
