Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Congrats @Pat_Mc Wishing you every success.

Great to hear about the pace once the clearance process starts @May Day Have you started in your new role?

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 May Day

No . Have to work out notice but they would have been happy for me to start the next day!

Any further progress recently with the panel?

While I'm a good bit down the list yet, I contacted PAS recently to ask about progress. There was almost 20 less ahead of me than a couple of months ago which suggests some have been appointed to regional locations, or otherwise gone off the panel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 370 ✭✭martian1980

Hi, that’s really interesting - thanks for mentioning. I’m on the panel too but well down the list. Would you mind giving us an idea of roughly where you are on the list and how many they said are ahead of you?

  • Registered Users Posts: 51 ✭✭Bowiegal

I’m 23 and was contacted for clearance yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 BlitheSpirit

Don't want to be too specific but I'm in the 50s and less than 30 ahead of me on Dublin panel. That was before most recent movement. Not sure at what point in the process people are taken out of the panel numbers.

    Congrats @Bowiegal !

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭APparently

That's brilliant @Bowiegal . Great to see panel moving a little. Let us know how long clearance takes and if you are happy with your new department.

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 softskills

Great news @Bowiegal Wishing you every success.

I didn't make the POH panel. Did ok in most sections at interview (better than PO in some) but fell down on the specialized knowledge where I was asked about banking specifics that I didn't know.

  • Registered Users Posts: 51 ✭✭Bowiegal

Thanks @BlitheSpirit @APparently @softskills Am staying in my current Department so will let you know how long it takes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 50 ✭✭APparently

That is a pity @softskills but you still have this panel. I'm surprised at them asking you questions about banking considering they would have been recruiting for Taoiseachs and DPER and not just Finance. Intersting to see how many they put on a panel. Although they took so few off the last Higher panel.

I’m on this panel and got a message from publicjobs earlier seeking expressions of interest from candidates on the PO 2022 panel to be considered for a vacancy in a particular department. It lists off some information on the role and the skills which the ideal candidate would possess and asks for people to apply by a date in January. The skills are all what you would have demonstrate through the regular competencies - is it appropriate that they handle the panel in this way? I can understand doing location-based expressions of interest but should the next person on the list not be approached for that role?

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 softskills

Yeah, I did wonder about this also. I guess IR is not for everyone so maybe that is their rationale in putting it out there. That said, I was struck by the same thought as you that it was a bit irregular to ask for EOI out of order.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21 Palofmine

I’d agree that IR can be tricky and may not be for everyone but there’s few handy roles at PO level and plenty of people working these kind of jobs without having been specialists. The desired skills listed aren’t specialised and if I was next on the list I wouldn’t be happy about this. I feel that everyone on the panel has already successfully competed to be where they are and there shouldn’t be another competition/interview to be done in order to get placed.

    IR is Irish Rail?

The job probably isn't civil service, it's public service hence the EOI option vs just assigning someone.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21 Palofmine

IR is referring to industrial relations

    Any movement on the panel?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 DaDoRonRonRon

I'm mid 40's on the panel and just got the email re clearance....definitely moving again

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 BlitheSpirit

Goods news @DaDoRonRonRon - well done. Let us know how it progresses.

Is that for Dublin? If so, it's moved on a good bit since end Nov.

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 softskills

I was just thinking that @BlitheSpirit . Last I remember was @Bowiegal at #23 in November.

Thanks for posting the update @DaDoRonRonRon and good look with the appointment when it happens.

Good to see the panel moving, gives hope to those of us who are positioned in the 70's.

  • Registered Users Posts: 51 ✭✭Bowiegal

I think a few people have come off the Dublin panel for regional posts. Great to see it moving. My clearance took approx 2.5 weeks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 DaDoRonRonRon

Yes, that's for Dublin. Hopefully they'll keep this increased pace up!

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

Congrats @DaDoRonRonRon Hope you’re out of clearance by now.

Does anyone know if the panel has moved since?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 baxza

I'm in early 50s and have passed through clearance process now. Got notification about clearance nearly 2 weeks ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 Hibearnian

Also early 50s and got my email re clearance this morning.

    Congrats @baxza and @Hibearnian

Great to see the panel moving at a decent pace

What's the total panel? 75 or so?

At this rate next set of interviews by early autumn.... or before?!

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

I think a colleague mentioned someone in the 80s. Could be wrong about that. If this pace keeps up, I’d be hopeful of a batch 2 being called.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,070 ✭✭✭purple hands

Sorry if off topic, but how often do these principal officer competitions happen? (annually?) And how would one keep an eye out for them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

About every 2 years. This competition won’t expire until March 2024. Your best bet would be to set up an account on publicjobs.ie and set up an alert. There might be more specialist equivalent roles that crop up before than that you’d like

81 are on the order of merit from Batch 1… if they are clearing candidates in the early 50s there must be fewer than 30 candidates left on the original Order of Merit.

Wonder when they will call Batch 2 for assessment?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 BlitheSpirit

I'm in the late 50s and have been contacted about clearance.

For those who have already passed clearance, what did they ask for in terms of reference from past employers? Written reference or just phone number to call them up?

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 softskills

Great so see this panel moving so will. For those of us in the nose bleeds (60s) This point seemed so far away at the start. Congrats to everyone who has been appointed so far. I hope you are enjoying the new roles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 softskills

    Mid-60s contacted for clearance :-)

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

Congratulations! Surely PAS will have to call batch 2 soon? They’ve picked up the pace significantly

  • Registered Users Posts: 370 ✭✭martian1980

Fantastic - well done. Please keep us posted on when you get offered a post.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 BlitheSpirit

    Congrats @softskills .

My clearance went through very quickly - existing civil servant- and now assigned with start date to be confirmed.

@night_owl_2022 Was asked to confirm current employer details and PAS contacted them directly by email.

Any word from those in the 70s? If there was 81 in the first batch and they had 60-odd reached by February, that's nearly 10 per month (or am I misunderstanding anything there?).

Also am I right in understanding that 81 is from the top 243 in round 1, so about a third were still available and got through? It seems a bit low, but I guess between people already promoted internally, and others no longer available/interested, perhaps 50% get through the 2nd round who are still there?

I'm in the early 600s from round one so hoping against hope there's another 2 batches before the panel expires.

not quite 81/243. Stage 2 is shortlisting based on forms. Don’t know how many made it through that to interview. Progress averages out to what you’ve said but it was v slow to December and then there was a surge.

fingers crossed you get called for interview. There’s about a year to go. The last comp called at least 3, if not 4, batches

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭hardybuck

I remember hearing about 5 years ago that something like 8 or 9 in every 10 POs were due to retire in the coming decade. Then obviously POs are going to get promoted to A/Sec, and the Civil Service numbers have also been going up incrementally each year in line with an expanding remit and population growth.

There's about 1,500 POs in the Civil Service. If you consider the above it's likely that the system will probably need around 150 new POs a year every year for the next few years at least.

So yeah, I'd say they'll probably need to do another couple of batches before running another competition in order to keep up with demand. PAS are absolutely flat out trying to feed the machine it seems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21 Palofmine

It’s at the early 70s now

  • Registered Users Posts: 83 ✭✭goofy141

What are the chances of them calling batch 2 - I am in the early 300's from round 1?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

With about 10 left and a year to go, I’d be hopeful you’ll get called @Goofy

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭Winterspring

Surely they hv to call the next batch soon. I wonder will they notify the next batch in advance of shortlisting or just give them the shortlisting results as the next communication as u would imagine time is tight to get the next panel up and running b4 they run out of candidates on the first panel

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 dotski_w_

In terms of time being tight, they might not be under huge external pressure to always have some ready to go, as departments usually have an internal competition/panel and will often be happy or even prefer to fill from that (33% are supposed to come from that but most have a big enough debt to the open panel).

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 marvelkhaleesi

There are internal panels but a few Departments are struggling to get internal applicants for those. I wouldn’t give up hope of another batch being called in the next while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 44 dotski_w_

I didn't think there's any shortage for applicants for internal competitions? Certainly isn't in mine, they had to shortlist applicants as there's too many to interview.

What departments did you hear were having problems getting applicants, I might look for a lateral transfer?

Union said there are a few. Might get details at ADC.
