The European Sturgeon was a migratory fish like salmon native to Irelands rivers but was hunted to extinction. Do you think we should reintroduce them?

Never heard of a fishery for them, they seem to have died out before large scale commercial fishing developed in the last century. Building of weirs and dams on rivers probably did more to kill them off here, preventing access to spawning areas upstream. As a native species it would be good to see them back, but given the weirs etc still exist, not sure a reintroduction programme would have any success. Our water quality is a lot worse than it was back then too.

They occasionally get caught by sea fisheries around our coasts. I don't know when the last one was seen up one of our rivers, though.
