Either way, brutal defending to allow then win so many balls in a row.

    4-1 now.

Don't know if Spurs or Liverpool are a bigger mess at the moment, both teams seems to have forgotten how to play football

10 man Wolves take the lead having been behind, another manager could be on his way.

I think a point midweek against City would be more than a decent result for Arsenal right now. Lose, and I'll suspect they'll fold mentally.

Fecking Arsenal, win today and definitely would have heaped extra pressure on City especially after everything that went on during the week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I think the news during the week was just what City needed to motivate themselves for the run in. Bad news for Arsenal. I think their race is run.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

    It's a magic 8 ball.

Terrible goal to give away 1 minute before half time, why were they so open?

Willian has been a class signing for Fulham.

Bad days for Newcastle and Arsenal. Really need to win those games. City have a real chance now to turn the screw on Arsenal.

Newcastle's form quietly dropping off. One win in their last five in the league now. Think that 4th CL spot is really up for grabs for anyone who can put a bit of a run together.

So funny watching Newcastle and Howe getting frustrated and angry for Bournemouth 'game management' tactics today! Brilliant.

He's one of the least self-aware fella's out there it seems... was the same in the Leeds game a wee while back, was going mad over their time wasting.

Just like last weekend. They didn't capitalise then, they may not this time either.

Just looking at a comparison at some of the clubs that are in better form this season and having better seasons overall, and comparing them that are underperforming by a lot.

I think it's fair to say that Arsenal, Newcastle and Man Utd are (were) all flying. In the top positions in the league and 2 are in a cup final. All are overachieving in terms of league position, even if all 3 have spent vast amounts of money on their first team over the last 12-24 months.

Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham and to a degree Man City are all underperforming. Liverpool, Chelsea & West Ham have all been hit by periods of fatigue, multiple injuries and general lack of legs throughout the season.

For the whole season, Newcastle & Arsenal have had the luxury of being able to select largely the same 11 every game. No need to rotate because of tiredness, injuries etc. Pick the same 11 and take off some players if winning. Man Utd have basically been doing the same across all competitions, rarely rotating. But have had roughly the same 3-14 players used more than 11.

We are starting to see a break in form now with Newcastle & Arsenal. Playing the same players over and over has had an affect and they are not starting to tire. Bodies start to creak, you can't make the sprint in the 85th minute as easily. Will the same happen to Man Utd?

Why the comparison? The number of games played last season.

    Liverpool 63

    Chelsea 63

    West Ham 56

    Man City 59

    Man Utd 50

    Arsenal 43

    Newcastle 40

There is over half a season's worth of games between top and bottom there in the list. That's not even including international games like the AFCON, Nations League, World Cup etc. A few seasons worth of condensed seasons has definitely taken its toll with these players over the last while and the clubs that had players who were playing less are taking advantage of it now. Even just to mention some players - Mane & Salah played 4 finals that went to extra time and penalties. Extra minutes.

I know myself that Henderson & Fabinho look completely shot since last season. Can't run anymore. Left it all behind them last season. There's a few Chelsea lads that say the same about Kovacic. Kovacic & Fabinho are only 29. Kante looks like he is finished completely now. KDB's form has fallen off a cliff since the World Cup and he doesn't seem to have the same energy as months ago, or other seasons.

A lot to be said for having fresh bodies this season, coming off the back of a few condensed seasons with multiples competitions on the go at the same time. Looks like going for more than 2 screws you over in the long term.

Think 3rd and 4th with so many games left are still up for grabs.

Could you argue many teams would have players rested over the WC period though. Sure there are players in pl teams that played big parts in the wc but I'd have figured there were more teams that had the chance to rest the other rest of the players.

Fabinho didn't play kn the WC, Henderson didn't play the first game and was subbed the other 2. (Not to pick at Liverpool just the two players you mentioned)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,054 ✭✭✭wanderer100

Was watching this game earlier and was questioning why they weren't showing the offside lines like they usually do when checking for offside. Well there's the answer. Ridiculous stuff

I agree with this. One player it really applies to is Mason mount. I heard a podcast comparing his mins over the last year or 18 months with odegaard and it was a crazy difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,869 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Henderson played the 8th most minutes for England at the World Cup (outfielders). So basically was a key player. I don't think that he is a good example to use as someone getting a rest during the WC. Both Fabinho & Hendo started the season looking tired. A break 3 months later wasn't going to help.

Either way, Henderson had played an awful lot of football before the World Cup. I think it's 91 games he has played in since the start of last season. That amount of games is going to have a massive affect on players.

Some clubs did use the WC to rest players alright - I think Newcastle & Arsenal were actually 2 clubs that benefitted from not having their key players play too much minutes at the World Cup.

But again, using a mid season tournament as a break doesn't really help when it is mid season. The damage had been done and clubs are already chasing, and trying to run up hill while others are on a flat terrain.

Refereeing standards have slipped to the lowest of the low recently, right? I’d happily see VAR go, because it spoils the enjoyment of the game for me, but eh how bad are these guys gonna be when they don’t have the benefit of being able to watch incidents back on video?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,004 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Fabinho didn't play any minutes for brazil and he looks beat, a lot in the pool forum dont want him on the pitch again.

If I was a pool fan I'd be looking at the backroom setup, lads seem to run in to the ground

I dunno i don't agree with your original point to honest. Its nit picking players and used an a excuse for bad form.

In the opposite some players in teams have come on leaps and bounds this season looking in good form from playing.

To say United are over achieving yet we had the most players playing in the wc, have been stuck with injuries just as much. We've a mad schedule this month so things could change in form.

That Barnes first goal offside was mad when its mm,

Yet the ref sending of Lamina because he was the 3rd man approaching him when a foul was called is fkin mental. (Neves' mouth on motd)

Refs were shocking today and continue to get worse since var

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,882 ✭✭✭✭CSF

I feel like it’s not that VAR has made them worse, so much as it is, that VAR has given them more things to do that they can make a balls of.

Take the Chelsea penalty decision today for instance. In olden times, the decision would still be wrong, but people would just conclude that the referee didn’t see it/isn’t very good. But how a guy can watch video footage of that (at whichever speed they feel is the most appropriate one) and be like ‘yeah, no pen’ is just baffling. VAR almost puts a magnifying glass on how low the standards are, but at the same time it probably gives them a bit of a free pass, because people talk about VAR as conscious being that is messing things up.

Absolutely. People need to stop calling it VAR and call it the name of the moron in the box who happens to be cutting his toenails instead of watching the match. 'Today's box idiot is Lee Mason'
