    Tony Hicks of the Hollies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

The Hollies, which was formed in 1962, do not have any of their original members left in their line up. Lead guitarist Tony Hicks was in the line up for all their record releases, but did not join until 1963. Drummer Bobby Elliot also joined that year, and was not involved in some of their early single releases. Original lead vocalist Allan Clarke was the last founding member to leave the group in 2000.

I'd have said "was in the lineup for all their record releases" qualifies him; bands often have a lot of changes before they get signed. If you apply that criteria Charlie Watts isn't an original Stone because they played some gigs before he joined; ditto Keith Moon and the Who.

British rock band Be-Bop Deluxe - Bill Nelson, lead vocalist and lead guitarist. Another grey area as it soon became largely his band.

Do the Divine Comedy count? Only Neil Hannon has been an ever present

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,966 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

I'd bracket them alongside the Cure and the Fall, they both started as proper bands but quickly morphed into one-man projects. Even more so in the case of the Divine Comedy, they only made a couple of obscure mini-albums as a 3 piece, then split up and Hannon re-used the name for his subsequent solo project. His first record "Liberation" was almost entirely recorded just by him, and got a lot more notice than anything the previous line-up had done.

The Divine Comedy is basically a one-man project as is The The (Matt Johnson), and these days Simply Red (Mick Hucknall). I always thought The Cure was a proper group, but maybe it has evolved into a one-man operation (Robert Smith). Funnily enough, I always considered The Fall as a group despite its domination by Mark E. Smith, and, of course, he being the only original member long before his demise. Brix Smith, for example, was quite influential in its sound when she was a member of The Fall.

Toadies, American alternative rock band - Vaden Todd Lewis, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist

Mondo Rock, Australian rock band, formed in 1976 - Ross Wilson, lead vocalist, guitarist and harmonica player. To be fair. all the other current four members go back to at least 1980 with the drummer Gil Matthews going back to 1979, albeit with some lengthy absences in between for most of them.

Coldplay have had the same four members since they officially became Coldplay. They definitely don't fit the bill for this thread.

New Musik, British electro-pop band - Tony Mansfield, lead vocalist and guitarist

Earth, Wind and Fire, founded in 1970 - Verdine White, bassist and possible vocalist. To be fair, the other two current core members of the band have been there since 1972: Vocalist and percussionist Philip Bailey and drummer and vocalist Ralph Johnson.

The Quarrymen, English skiffle and rock and roll band - Colin Hanton, drummer.

This is quite impressive considering it formed in 1956! He originally left it in 1959 and the band stopped in 1960. It was reformed in 1994 and Colin re-joined in 1997 and has been in the line up to the present date. The other official members of the Quarrymen go back to 1957 and 1958!

The Quarrymen is of course most famous for bringing John Lennon (one of the original members), Paul McCartney and George Harrison together, which would lead on to the Beatles.

Hadn't heard about this, at one point they had forced Kowalczyk out of the band... surprised that the line-up stayed so stable for so long.

Dragon, formed in Auckland in 1972, still active with only bassist Todd Hunter there from the original group

I only really know the 'O Zambezi' album but it's good, interesting collision of classic rock and new wave

Marillion - Steve Rothery, the guitarist has been the only consistent member since 1979. Same line up since 1989 however.

Helmet - Page Hamilton, vocalist and guitarist is the only member left.

Warrior Soul - Kory Clarke is the only original member left.

And one for the metal heads that I'm very surprised has not been mentioned. Pantera! Rex Brown is the only original member of that band. Anselmo didn't join the group until 1986.

not sure if they've been mentioned yet, but Fun Lovin' Criminals are now down to just one original member with the departure of frontman Huey Morgan.
