Why would Ken go somewhere else to do more work for less money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,977 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Think Ken would be a big draw for anyone to bring in, he'd have some interesting options if he fancied a move I'd say. But that's not even what I'm talking about anyway - you just got the feeling with him at times that he was getting frustrated with just being 'the football guy', throwing out takes week after week after week. There was a period there a year or so ago especially where he seemed to be struggling with it a bit, and with what the point of it all was. He said it a few times, but the one that especially stuck with me was that political podcast Roisin Kiberd one (i think it was) where he really sounded like he was having a bit of an existential crisis about the whole thing.

So basically, Ken is really what I'm subscribing for, so I want him to have the flexibility to actually be happy and motivated doing what he's doing, and able to satisfy his curiosities every now and again. He's an interesting fella anyway, so those offshoots are usually worth following.

Yeah would love more random sports stuff from the pod. Would also listen to ken make his shopping list each week.

Andrew Mangan again, FFS. I don’t think they have a fan of any other club on nearly as regularly as him

Ken's discussion with Murph about Kilmacud-Crokes fielding an extra player was pure gold. He was obviously trying to wind-up Murph, but he also made valid points as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,311 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

As a protest did Richie swear to never say anything illuminating about a match ever again?

  • Registered Users Posts: 699 ✭✭✭bamayang

Very true. Murph was caught in that very GAA space of knowing something wrong has happened but being unable to agree with the correct punishment being applied.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

Ken is like a holy fool when he discusses GAA. His fundamental ignorance of the organisation leads him to a better understanding of basic common sense than someone like Murph steeped in its convoluted workings.

His accent makes him very hard to listen to

I do rate David Syned for his LOI contributions but he went down in my estimations for claiming other users tweets as his own

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,595 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Not really sure why Murph is being so defensive of Kilmacud Crokes, human error or not, what happened was wrong. The match should be replayed in my opinion

The whole lose in the right way is a load of shite

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Ken wiped the floor with Murph on that Crokes debacle.

Enjoyed the boxing chat yesterday, interesting topic on something different I wouldn't usually be interested in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,491 ✭✭✭The Davestator

Agreed. It was the main thing I put in my survey as their boxing coverage is so good, they just don't do much of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,977 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Find Sneyd alright on LOI coverage, since it's a bit of a specialist subject - but struggle with him on more general football pods. He just talks so so much, and says so little. He'd be breathless with how long he's going on about something, with 5 tangents and aborted sentences, all to say "Arsenal are playing well", with no more real insight than that.

I also asked for more of it in the survey, with Mark to be more involved.

On the topic of the boxing chat (well slightly related) - that song used in the Kellie Harrington audio bed is some dirge, bloody awful tune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,977 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I think it's a love it or hate it sort of song. Can't handle it myself, the singer's tone of voice just cuts right through my nerves, so it's always a +30 button mash from me!

Ken's gleeful torturing of Murph over the GAA shenanigans was hilarious...poor aul Murph couldn't finish the show fast enough 😂

Sound levels all over the place again today.

Perhaps before sending out surveys on improving the show they could get the basic fundamentals right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,595 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Ken undoing his good work by seemingly defending the Crossmaglen player for not going off after his second yellow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,626 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Maybe I'm getting deaf in my old age but I can't say I've noticed anything really about the sound levels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

The audiobed at the end was noticeably loud. Overall I don’t see it as anything major as an issue with the show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,585 ✭✭✭cmac2009

I'm noticing it for all audiobeds. It sounded like they were whispering after the intro and I had to adjust the volume upwards. And re-adjust down again for the next audiobed preceding the football chat. Maybe it's podcast app related, but this was happening in early January and it appeared to be resolved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Icemancometh

Murph: "I just find my own reaction to this fascinating." No surprise he featured so much on egomaniacs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Dante

Their audiobed game has really plummeted over the last 18 months, whats the story? I'm getting very sick of hearing the same 3 or 4 audiobeds over and over. Give the people what they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,465 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Yep terrible again yesterday, the interviews were low but the "links" in between them were barely audible, the audiobeds were at a normal level but sounded way too loud because the rest was so poor

    Scrap the cap!

This might sound harsh, but I've been listening back to the isolating podcasts over the okay while, and the quality dropped when Doddles went back to Dublin for lockdown 2. The jingley/fun elements added in weren't as good. Just noticed he said that Simon was producing it (Mark did series 1 from Achill). Simon has been on a few times over the past little bit, maybe he's producing more at the moment and that's where the drop in quality comes from?

What do folks think of Ken and his attitude to physicality in soccer?

Two shows this week spent highlighting the Pope clash with Djenepo. Here it is for those that haven’t seen it.

    https://twitter.com/cryptodr3amz/status/1617989691655225344?s=61&t=jELEzuhmJ6Oidkm_E3BnrA

Ken doesn’t seem to appreciate that there is nothing in the rulebook to prohibit this kind of clash and it would be an extremely hard to legislate against. It’s simply part of the game. There’s no foul play or no excessive force. I don’t really get how Ken thinks one of these clashes warrants a discussion. If we saw these types of clashes a lot I’d think we should be talking about it but Ken sees one clash like this and blows it up to prompt a discussion that I would describe as pearl clutching.

when Eoin challenged him on it today, Ken had no answers to the points raised and seemed slightly miffed to be challenged on it.

it was the same with the struijk tackle on Elliot last season. Ken basically said this was an natural consequence of LET IT FLOW and we’d be seeing a lot more of this injuries. Yet an entire season later and what have we actually seen in terms of crazy challenges or bone shattering injuries. Maybe Matt Doherty last season from a Matty Cash tackle but what else?

I honestly think Ken has watched so much soccer that he has lost perspective on just how sanitised a game modern soccer is. That players routinely exhibit to be in the throes of unimaginable pain from minor contact, then slowly recover by rubbing the affected area, returning gingerly to their feet while complaining to the ref….and then one minute later they are back to being completely fine in a recovery that isn’t logical. As one example Bruno Fernandes will do this at least once a game. Why doesn’t Ken seem to ever see this as behaviour worth commenting on. My own feeling, as already stated, is that Ken has become so used to illogical behaviour that he simply isn’t able to identify the behaviour as illogical.

kind of ironic given his comments on GAA this week and their inability to follow their own rule book.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,977 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

    There actually is plenty of language in the rulebook to prohibit this sort of challenge (and I think it's fairly easy to argue that there is at very least a clear lack of consideration for an opponent, and a disregard for the danger to an opponant);

    • "A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force",

It provides a list of these types of challenges, including; "charges" and "jumps at". And also specifies that; "Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution", "Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned", "Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off"

By the rules, it would seem at least a yellow should have been the decision, and imo would be very difficult to argue against.

(would also disagree with your reading of the Ken/Eoin interaction... didn't sound miffed to me, just sounded like a regular interaction, with a reasonable answer. It also sounded like Eoin agreed with Ken).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,311 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

i accept some of those points but it’s not really excessive force is it? Pope runs at the ball, heads it and then his natural momentum takes him into Djenepo. I think anyone saying it’s excessive or reckless is just wrong. Disregard for the opponent is also too strong for me. It’s just one of those things. I’d be interested to see if bazunu had done that at the other end would Ken have such a problem with it. I have doubts.

for the Eoin / Ken exchange and Ken being miffed, you didn’t see it the way I did that Eoin said he was on Ken’s side defensively because he sensed Ken was a bit miffed? I think there was a bit of that in it to be honest. It wasn’t overwhelmingly like that but a little.

Moving on…any opinions on my main point that Ken does an awful lot of worrying about soccer becoming too physical? Futile worrying in my opinion. Soccer is extremely safe and there’s no indication of that changing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,977 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

It’s in the rules that getting the ball at all costs is not acceptable. I agree excessive force is harder to argue, in that his maximum pace was needed to get to the ball. But it’s clearly reckless, in that his only consideration was getting the ball, even when it was clear he would absolutely smash his opponent - significantly enough to see the fella have to leave the game with a concussion.

yeah, got absolutely none of the ‘miffed’ aspect from their chat tbh.

Can’t say I particularly disagree with his broader point too… we’re seeing more challenges where someone doesn’t touch the ball let go. Prior to this new shift, we had ~10 years of knowing what a foul was. The change to let things go (but paradoxically pull them back if someone scores in the next minute) just wasn’t needed. And given the numbers of matches played now, and the ever increasing numbers of injuries from wear and tear right across the league, it’s not helpful for anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

The sound quality for Wednesdays pod was absolutely disgraceful. Proper woeful. Kens mumbling low into the mic don't help either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,311 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

If it’s deemed reckless for a player to run at full pace which is all pope basically done then I think football is putting themselves in a tricky position in terms of making that reckless play in the rules.

the exchange between Eoin and Ken (and murph) went like this. Eoin asked Ken if the clash came between two other players out the field with no GK involved would he still deem the pope challenge as a problem (forget his exact phrase). Ken doesn’t understand the question and murph interjects with a minute or two of pure murph waffle where his point is that GKs have to be subject to different rules because they haven’t the technical or athletic balance capacity of outfield players. Try putting that in a book of rules. Moving on from that eye rolling point, Eoin puts the original question to ken and then sheepishly (and I’m not really having anyone say it isn’t sheepish) says “ just trying to tease it out”. It sounds like Eoin says that in reaction to a grimace or some non verbal reaction but that’s strictly what I’m hearing. Ken then bluffs his response by saying we “ don’t want to see players taken off with concussion”. that’s about it as i heard it

i agree we don’t want to see players off with concussion. If that means players aren’t allowed to run at full speed in certain situations as Ken’s point basically implies them again I think you’re talking about a fundamental change in the game. A fundamental and slightly bizarre change to the game.

as for not knowing what is a foul anymore, nah I don’t agree. Pre VAR or Let it flow was a far worst period in knowing what a foul was in my opinion. People have moaned about the refs and the rules for 30 or so years since sky tv started. Not much has changed.

in the aftermath of the Harvey Elliot broken leg, Ken’s hypothesis was this was a natural consequence of let it flow but the year plus since has been quiet in terms of serious injuries inflicted by tackles in the premier (van der beek and doherty being two exceptions) . And overall soccer and serious injuries are not very conjoined. Jiminez and Ryan mason were two atrocious injuries but complete mishaps that could only be taken out of the game by not allowing players to challenge for an aerial ball.

as I said Ken’s squeamishness about physical contact in soccer is to me, a load of hot air that is affecting my enjoyment of the podcast when Ken gets on his high horse about it. He ignores or can’t process through a lack of perspective the absolute gallons of play acting and injury faking most premier leagues serve up.

just expressing it here as it’s got to the stage where a bit of pushback and debate is helpful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,595 ✭✭✭✭siblers

It was last season or the season before where Ederson punched a ball away byvgoing knee first into his own defender's head causing a fairly bad injury . He has a history of doing it and always gets praised for it for being 'brave'

Smashing through players like that to get the ball should be at least be a yellow, regardless what team the player is on, it's wreckless and incredibly dangerous but keepers always seem to get a free pass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,311 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I’d like to see the incident, If a knee is raised then you’re definitely in the realm of recklessness

popes knee wasn’t raised. His chest made contact with djenepo. You can’t “extend” your chest or hide it away. It’s just there. If you think GKs get away with stuff like this then I would say that in this incident if there’s 2 outfield players involved in this clash in the middle of the pitch I don’t see it being anything other than an accepted clash for the ball .

I think since it’s a gk involved and it’s a incident near the goal it’s unjustly getting upgraded even though the rules are the same in what constitutes a foul in all parts of the pitch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,465 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Pope could have walked but it was a yellow at least. Also some pretty scummy carry-on from NUFC players after the incident which led to the Southampton second yellow.

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Pretty clear to me that ball in air means the level of consideration in the tackle getting made should be even higher. Pope showed a clear lack of consideration for Djenepo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,311 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Fair enough, I watch a lot of Soccer and just don’t see this violent, dangerous game that Ken seems to perceive. I see the opposite to be honest. Foul play is dealt with harshly and there are only a few hatchet men left in the division compared to 2 decades ago. Players take the piss with their incredible reactions to minor physical contact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,595 ✭✭✭✭siblers

The Southampton player went off with concussion. No play acting going on
