I see some videos like that on TikTok a bit. Their ingenuity is amazing With the little tools and machines they have

@IFarmWeFarm7615 Well done Adrian on your video today and raising the subject bought a few tickets and see you’ve almost reached your target by 12 noon. So it looks like it will be very successful. You’re a very natural speaker and I can see you on ear to the ground or some other rte programme in the future.

on the workshop I wouldn’t divide it up. Why not put two sliding g doors on a double rail. You will regret having two small an access door.

@IFarmWeFarm7615 excellent video today. Keep up the good work 👌

Thanks lad appreciate that. Seems to have went down well so fare.

I get what you’re saying on the shed as it does makes perfect sense but my sort of intention was to have the upper side to store straw and saw dust etc, that was kinda my way of thinking anyhow . The central wall I imagined would be handy for racking lengths of steel, wood and so on. Maybe I’m wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔 Might have a rethink yet

I bought a used roller door last Thursday on done deal which I have to go pick up tomorrow, It’s just a domestic manual door that hopefully I can reinforce myself for a bit of extra security. Just the thought of some shelter and warmth is very welcoming on its own

@IFarmWeFarm7615 - super video today Adrian & family and well done to ye.

I agree with putting doors on both sides of the shed especially if you want to store straw and saw dust/shavings. You said in the video that the rain blows in so why pay good money for the straw/saw dust only to let the rain into it.

The tool fix store in Dundalk that sponsored the Dewalt gear in Ifarm's video is some spot. You'd do awful damage with the cheque book in there.

Just watched sam monk on grassmen.what are the rest of us doing with our days

I've never been there but I bought a Dewalt torque wrench online this year from toolfix.ie for OH as a Christmas pressie. Imagine the damage to the bank account that I would do if I got a chance to roam between Penneys and toolfix.ie - 😍

@IFarmWeFarm7615 just watched your video Adrian, really well done and your an excellent down to earth speaker. Your experience with your mental health almost mirrors my own and Id say many other farmers. It can be a tough task to balance all of life's challenges when farming, and if I've learned anything over the past few years is you need to work at being happy and relaxing just as much as you need to work on the farm.. over 22k raised already, keep up the good work.

Holy ****, that's some rise in 14 years and some outfit..1 tractor to 74 now mental. I gave a bit of time in Australia and there is definitely much more freedom and opportunity but still how is that done?

Thanks lad appreciate that, ya it’s amazing the amount of people in the comment section alone that have went or are currently going through the same thing. That in itself is bound to reassure others. The raffle has been mind blowing to say the least, but just the awareness on its own makes it all worth while. 👍

    Definitely so it’s unreal!

Certainly didn’t predict that response, hopefully some good will come from all of it 🤞🤞

C’mere. He’s trying to sell tickets, not hold onto ‘em

I see Gerry6420 is back again. How clean he keeps that yard never ceases to amaze me. An absolute credit to him.

I thought he was waffling on a bit and with all that info did they leave a profit

The only thing worse than no data is data that's not accurate

I was thinking the same when watching that video. I'm not a beef farmer but I was wondering why you would send animals to the factory when they haven't hit your desired weight. From what Phil was saying, some of those animals weren't finished fully. Why would you send an unfinished animal off? Would you not be better waiting an extra 3/4 weeks and pack on another 20kg or so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭farmerphil135

A finished animal is down to its fat cover and above 500kg. Other than our daily weight gains I am happy with the cattle. The problem with waiting longer is there’s a price reduction once they go over 24 and with nearly all the bulls going over 24 in February it’s more bulls than the factory will take in a short space of time.

Id imagine theres a cashflow element. Youd often see lads selling lambs as store rather than finishing them to liquidate a bit of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭KAMG

Just being curious here Phil. Why do ye continue with this system of trying to finish bulls under 24 months when its obviously not possible for ye to do so consistently? If I'm correct, from watching your videos, these cattle are in the shed since early September. That means most of the cattle your killing from now on, are over 5 months in the sheds. That is an awful lot of silage to be fed and slurry to be stored.

Why do ye not go for more bullocks? And finish off grass in their 3rd summer. Under 30 months would be a lot easier for ye to attain proper weights.

I know that the cattle you deal in are of the 'lowest quality' and cost very little as calves. But for a 2 year old bull to be 500 kgs liveweight at 24 months is very light. What do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭Sheep breeder

Thinking similar to you that 500kgs at 23 months is very light and kill out would be very poor, from time working in meat factory it’s all about confirmation and the most important the weighting scales at the end of the line and the payment grid. Poor cattle command a poor price at the end of the day,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 971 ✭✭✭leoch

Would His bulls average 1300 with current beef prices it's not much for keeping them nearly 30 months .....would he be better feeding half the amount of a n older suckler type bull it would be away alot quicker for alot more money... ok it would be more money to buy buy may leave more in a shorter period of time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭KAMG

A quick back of the envelope calculation is as follows. Based on agriland prices for under 24 Month bulls (o & p grades). On 9 Jan 23 (Around the time he mentioned the bulls going first) the flat price offered was 4.80. So average carcass weight of 283 x €4.80 is €1,358. For second load, assuming they went last week, the price on agriland for under 24 Month bulls (o & p grades) was 4.90. So, average carcass weight of 263 x €4.90 is €1,289.

In my opinion, after having these animals for almost 2 years, this is a very poor return. And these are the best 2 loads I assume!!!

I don't want to come across as negative because I love watching Phil's videos. But, I just feel for all the hard work that is involved in his business, he is relying on Youtube for a living. He has stated before that he doesn't get paid from the farm. That is not a surprise based on the above estimated returns. His father said in the Farm Flix video they featured in that they rent 300 acres of land!!! More madness.
