I thought I read somewhere that one of the warm up matches might be in France v Samoa.. but can't find that now.

We have at least 1 more and probably 2 warm ups. IRFU will want at least 1 more game in Aviva to try sell tickets/Earn few €€€

Sooo…… by the end of 2023.

I’d actually be surprised if he got another cap barring an injury crisis.

By the end of the six nations is sooner than by the end of 2023, so…

Would it be nuts to just play doris and coombes together? Coombes, Doris, VdF back row would be interesting.

Stockdale earls Murray and aki selections. Murray and earls are finished and stockdale is in a long term slump, and aki has not played any rugby in months and is now not first choice at connacht

Crawley instead of carberry makes zero sense, Joe Murphy instead of treadwell - Murphy subbing for leinster actually works in his favour,

Farrell did no interview today and by doing so he let carberry swing in the wind, you should never treat people like that, disgraceful carry on

You think Farrell only communicates to players he’s dropped thru interviews?

I’d be amazed if he hadn’t spoken to him.

This might be a mad idea, but maybe farrell spoke to carbery directly.

Don't really think there would be anything nuts about it, but it would shift the balance in the back row a fair bit. Him and POM are vastly different players.

With henshaw out it makes Ringrose crucial to our success along with having Sexton, Furlong and Porter available.

We have depth elsewhere but those 4 players are crucial to this team because whats behind them isnt good enough to lift a trophy tbh.

I am sure he did But the story is carberry dropped -and the media have had a field day

Farrell sold out carbery by not doing interviews - would not be surprised if carberry never plays under farrell again

Yea, you’d have to shift roles some.

I have a theory that isn’t super unique probably that power guys in underpowered packs are underrated. And, if you can find a way to unleash them and surround them with power, they can be way better than you think. I’d love to see coombes get a run of games to find out.

His workload has been insane. A number of games he’s been primary power ball carrier for 60 mins and then 20 mins of lock. It’s kind of incredible munster have been able to win so many games with no locks on the bench.

Its so strange that the key argument against dropping Carberry is that he has been worse before and not been dropped. The dropping is long overdue. Hopefully it has the same impact as it did on VdF and Coombes.

Byrne definitely deserves his shot and it would be good to see himself and Crowley get some serious game time this 6N.

Great to see Coombes back. Unfortunate for Haley, he genuinely deserves a cut.

At least when i mentioned it, i meant it was weird timing. Not that it was a bad decision.

If he had your mentality he might not.. alternatively he could work on the feedback he got and nail down the 10 Jersey at Munster similar to what Coombes did after he got dropped.

Josh Van Der Flier reacted to getting dropped by winning world player of the year.

We should have been dropping players for the last 20 years, no harm, countless examples of it being harder to play your way onto the team than off it.

Can you change a squad member half way through (without injury?). As in, is it possible that Carbery is being sent for game-time and replace one of Crowley/Byrne mid-way through the tournament? (I presume not but just wondering is it allowed)

Its not a world cup with set squad size so we could add players any time we want. no need to even replace a player

I'd like to see Ross tog out in Cardiff. Save Sexton for France.

Surely neither would be allowed, it would have to be Harry Byrne if fit.

I think he meant start for Ireland in Cardiff v Wales, as opposed to v Cardiff for Leinster.

Is Joe Murphy a secret selection? Saw Joe McCarthy named alright

I reckon over the last 20 years a few players were dropped

Very good point. It's the correct way to look at the Carbery decision also. VdF was dropped a while back as his carrying was deemed ineffectual. Look at him now, player of the year, best no.7 in the world and his carrying is now a weapon for us. Ditto with Coombes, he was poor vs. NZ XV in the autumn, rightly dropped and in the interim has raised his game. Now back in the international squad and many posters here calling for him to be in the match day squad. POM was dropped too a while back and responded by having the best year of his career in a green jersey in 2022.

This is the correct way to manage professional players at the highest level. If their performance isn't where it needs to be they need to be left out in favour of those in form. It's incumbent then on the player to raise their game and force their way back into the squad. It's all on Joey now, he's had plenty of chances to prove his worth and it feels like this is his last chance saloon. It's up to him to lead the Munster line now from no.10 over the next while and show why he's good enough to be back in the Ireland squad.

He has the second highest number of turnovers for Munster this season. His intercept pass against Connacht really stands out, he wasn't under major pressure, he wasn't trying anything difficult, he just made a bizarre decision to shovel a 5 yard pass off to Carbury who was under more pressure and facing towards his own goal and it got picked off.

I know what you mean here, and I absolutely don't think it's a poor decision in a vacuum, I just find it truly bizarre that it has happened now of all times. Why didn't they do it a year ago? He has made every single Ireland squad he's been fit for since 2016.

Also, if I were a betting man, I'd bet he'll get minutes in the 6N at some point. Injury, or he'll get back in the next squad.

I have a feeling that the coaches value having the players leave the squad to play matches with their province. They probably analyse the performances and give feedback continuously. Playing a match is probably more beneficial than training, especially when the player in question has loads of experience in camp already..

Sexton and Crowley may both be ruled out yet for the first match and Carbery could then be brought in at short notice, and I'd like to see him bench with R Byrne starting.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,480 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

It seems clear that Carbery was seen as the best of a bad lot, a stop-gap while every single eligible 10 in the country was given a shot. Crowley has shown that he has the potential to be significantly better than Carbery, possibly in a much shorter time than it's taken the latter to reach his current level, and Byrne has upped his game and earned another chance.

It's not over for Carbery, he can still do what the others have done, if he's capable, and force his way back in. He's no longer there just as a sunk-cost option, if he gets back in the squad it'll be earned (or the others will flop badly in green and we're back to square one).

Don't know where you get that feeling from, but history would suggest its completely wrong. Training with the national squad is of far more importance then playing with the provinces. Crowley being with the coaches on the EI tour is how he has gotten to where he is in the national squad now. It may have less relevance for established players, but players the coaches are most interested in are in the squad.

Obviously Carbery will be brought in if Sexton and Crowley are ruled out.
