Hi guys, last January I moved back from the UK to Ireland, had bought a van earlier in the month. Never got around to VRTing it due to work commitments. Have had it parked up at the house. The missus went into the NCT centre and the woman in there gave her a company that would sort out the paperwork for us. A few emails back and forth with that guy, no dice. He doesn't seem to believe me about the price I paid for it, must think I've stolen it. Wanted more documents off me than he originally told me he'd need. He recommended another company but I was never able to get through to them. I understand there's fines to pay because it's been here a year now, I don't want to scrap it cause it's a great van to be fair and we've spent a nice bit getting it fixed up. My question is if I sell it to someone would they have to pay the same fines as I would to get it VRT'd?

    Thanks 👍

Yes they would, but there are ways around it. Theres also VAT and customs to be paid. Someone up the North would probably buy it from you if the price was reasonable

Do you know what are the ways around it?

I have thought of selling but it's out of MOT so can't insure it and I'm almost 6 hours away from the North.

I’m sure if you advertised it for a reasonable price someone from the North would buy it?

An Irish buyer will have to pay 10% customs and 23% vat, so it’s unlikely that anyone will buy it here unless its very cheap

They would need to pretend they bought it up North to avoid any late fees

    Transfer of residence (TOR) (revenue.ie)

Transfer of Residence as per link above may exempt the vehicle from VRT.

From my limited experience with TOR there may be alot of documentation required, think its all online now too

I looked at that sending our belongings home. I need documents to prove termination of living and employment in the UK. Proof of living and work in Ireland. None of which I really have. Thanks though

Would never have applied as he hadn’t owned it for 6 months before moving to Ireland.

There’s next to no chance of you finding someone to buy it for a reasonable price. VRT is one thing which can easily be sorted but you’ve screwed up the VAT and anyone buying it from you would have even less valid proof than you had (which was regarded as insufficient by the agent you contacted). The suggestion to send it back to the U.K. is the only sensible one although, if done correctly, that would entail a U.K. VAT charge at this stage although I doubt it would be enforced as there is next to no proof that it was previously exported (albeit inconclusively).
