A few snow flakes on the bin lid this morning here in Meath, so few I could count them.

MINK are far worse.... They can get into any coop and enjoy just beheading chickens. I stopped keeping hens in one place...Broke my heart .

Back to the topic! BITTER BITING cold wind out here. There were "hailiboys " ( Orkney talk for hailstones) in the night and very early JUST a thin line of white along the frot. All gone now.

The splendour of the far mountains brings tears....mobile melding of snow and dramatic clouds. If the light improves I will try for a photo. But it be very foreboding just now. And very very cold...

I've seen higher amounts of snow from a bog standard westerly in this part of the country at least than what this northerly brought. Last night's dusting still remaining on the ground and roads still around here despite temps remaining above freezing all night. Which is testament to to how cold the ground is I reckon.

Much to my surprise, snow is falling again at my location location in Longford. Was expecting sleet at best.

Any remaining showers should turn back to rain/sleet through the day as we are now past the coldest part of this cold snap with slightly milder air slowly filtering in off the Atlantic. We never actually completely cut off the Atlantic during this spell as there was always some Atlantic modification involved.

Looks lovely highdef. You got about what 3-6cm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭compsys

In fairness there was wall to wall coverage of the cold snap in the US a few weeks ago.

And heavy snow and temps below zero in the Alps are hardly newsworthy in the depths of winter.

The uppers over the country are only -4. Colder air will be filtering back in to the northern half of the country later this afternoon.

That must be the case, as despite the frequent rain showers so far this morning the snow is not thawing rapidly as it usually would. From about midnight the temperature rose. I thought being further south and inland the warm sector might not have been an issue here, as it was in Donegal, not so!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,531 ✭✭✭highdef

I measured 4cm on solid level ground away from any obstructions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,091 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

If I remember the news correctly it was only parts of the alps that were snow starved. The NW I think. It said the southern alps was normal and people had changed their plans to go there instead. No snow on the alps is going to make the news more than bog standard conditions with snow on the alps. Record amounts of snow on the alps would be newsworthy. The huge amounts of snow in buffalo got way more coverage.

The risk of avalanches and I think 2 deaths so far is the main topic of news from the Alps.

No snow on the eastern side of the country. Temps rising and frost all gone.

If we're not going to get snow I'd much prefer temps pf 11-12 degrees so the hitting wasn't on constantly.

The white landscape is nice to look at for a few days though.

We will get temperatures of 11 to 13C from the weekend and up to about Tuesday evening. After that we will go into a cooler spell with high pressure, frost likely to come back at night second half of next week. The wait for snow goes on in the east, like most years we probably won't see any flakes unless we get an easterly late February or early March.

    Thanks.

All the cold snaps we have got this winter and barely a flake of snow. It's disappointing but is what it is I suppose.

20 mins west of Cork city nearly all snow has melted although hills back in Naad are white. At least we had lieing snow from Monday afternoon to this morning. Disappointing the ever so slightly milder air came in this morning as there were light snow showers throughout the night that were sticking and we had a number of showers this morning but all sleet/wet snow, temp around 3c all morning.

Hard frosts in December and a couple of days of snow in Jan, it has been better than a lot of winters.........bring on the next chase!!

Very grateful as this bitter cold is hard on old bones!

A fairly rapid thaw of the frost now here in Meath.

We had a shower of mixed Wintry precipitation around 7.30am which left footpaths very slippery up to a while ago. Really had to be careful walking to school with the kids. I was surprised anything reached us at all as it was looking like a dry cold spell for us in the South East.

Currently its sunny with a temp of 4.1c

Major thaw on up here in the far north west.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,869 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

The problem is the showers will be petering out over much of Ireland at that stage except for the north . No such problem at the moment when the showers are all of rain!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,091 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Partial thaw but still completely white. A bit slushy on the footpaths.

I just feel that when that the absence of snow becomes such a news story then the follow up is important too (albeit it will obviously get less prominance - as people have said, bad news sells). I suppose I'm motivated by the fact I'm going there next week but anyone I mention that to tells me I should cancel as there is no snow. As of this morning my resort in the very NW alps has 85cm at resort level and about 3.5m at peak level and its currently pelting it down. Anyway, rant over....

Looks like this high pressure is going to hang around for quite a while and see out January.

Yet another Winter where January fails to deliver, though February still up for grabs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭esposito

It has delivered for some in fairness West Cork, Kerry, Donegal for example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,734 ✭✭✭Billcarson

Been 13 yrs now since we had a decent cold spell in January. May aswell say it will be at least 14 yrs now cos it won't be happening this yr.

Can next week's hp we will have over us move into a more favourable position for cold for early Feb? I think 9/10 times they don't and just sink south but we will see.........

Probably have to wait till about mid February to see if the strat can help us out.....

A few drone snaps taken about twenty minutes ago in Longford.

Well the rain showers have turned back to snow in the heavier bursts . I was not expecting that at all. Dinner plate sized snowflakes. Which means it's all very marginal, but nice to see!
