It was a bit of a mess because there was no angle for VAR which still seems a bit bizarre. Surely there would be a clip what would at least how close a decision it actually was even if it couldn't be definitive.

It's not even the first time that this happened this season. The incident for the offside Wolves goal.

The linesman flagged for offside when the corner taker was passed the ball. So that's the decision. VAR is used to back up/overturn that decision. As there was no camera angle to conclusively overturn the decision and prove the linesman was incorrect, his initial decision stood. If there was no VAR, the goal would still have been ruled out.

The exact same situation as the first goal in the Arsenal-Liverpool game this season where Saka may have been offside in the build up but they had no camera angle to show both the 'offside' and the ball at the point of contact at the same time. The linesman on the pitch had said he was onside, so the goal was awarded.

There was a similar incident a few years ago too with Pogba scoring for Man United after the ball had gone out over the sideline but no camera angle to show it at the time. The original decision of the goal being awarded stood.

I seen one from the other side of a fan cam that is even more obvious.

Not very clear at all just because the linesman flag.

I'm actually beginning to wonder who the linesman flagged for because it it was for totti it could have been checked I hope they at least they got that much right

Not a great clip... he's pausing it at the first moment you can see Nunes head in frame, but the ball has already been played at that stage and is up in the air from a fair few frames before. There's two pieces of movement that make it awkward - as well as Nunes moving towards onside totally unseen in those frames, Trent on the back post is moving the other direction. So the line is higher than it appears in this clip.

So this particular clip doesn't really tell us much either way, beyond that it was close.

They should really have dedicated VAR cameras looking straight across the goal line that takes in the whole area, but the lack of those means you can't do anything beyond go with the line-o's call.

If I was a Wolves fan I'd be more annoyed about the Mo goal - that's a stupid one, the defenders touch on the ball is obviously entirely motivated by Mo's presence behind him. Surely that's Mo interfering with play just by his very existence as a goal threat.

That clip is as clear as mud fella, seriously 'straight' lines too -- kinda looks like the VAR room the first time they tried drawing the lines.

I'm surprised a clip or even a photo from the otherside that was in some way level with him when the ball is actually played hasn't surfaced yet.

There's nothing more clear cut than freeze framing an offside decision after the person has played the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,270 ✭✭✭fyfe79

I remember someone a couple of years ago posting a zoomed-in freeze-frame of a player standing in an offside position relative to the defender, and saying "see, he's clearly in an offside position". The freeze-frame didn't have the passer of the ball, or the ball itself, in the picture! I suspected that if you zoomed-out for the entire picture, you'd see the ball in mid-air, long after it's left the passers boot.

So you can do the freeze frames here yourself, the only possible reason Nunez could be ONSIDE is if your interpretation of a change of phase of play is any touch at all. The first header after the corner nunez is offside, after the flick on he would be onside only if you count that as a change in the phase of play. It's clear enough that to me that this is offside.

If I'm not mistaken, of course the second flick on is a new phase. If a forward is in an offside position from a keeper playing a long ball forward but is then onside from a flick on, the linesman isn't going to flag the player due to him being offside from the initial ball forward from the 'keeper. Nunes wasn't interfering in play when the initial cross is headed out and isn't offside when the ball is then headed by Hwang.

Look I might be wrong, but the interpretation of the rule has never been that every single touch is a new phase of play. I don't remember ever hearing an exact definition but it has imo not been that every touch resets offside.

I would have thought that Cardiff (and Sheff Wed yesterday) would have had much better crowds.

Though they just said Cardiff haven't had a 20k+ crowd this season.

Great save !! By the defender first, clear Red card, and then the keeper keeps Cardiff ahead, 2-1 with 10 to go.

In fairness that second goal is deserved given they would have had one from the handball. That is the only arisen when a penalty kick is given I think a goal should be automatically given

Injury time goal gives Leeds another chance, they really looked to be going out.

Well done to Stevenage, 1-0 down away to Aston Villa, in the 88th minute they drew level and got the winner in injury time.

Hugely embarrassing defeat for Emery and Villa as they lose at home to league 2 Stevenage.

Tuchel to Potter was a terrible downgrade. Would Potter have been hyped up the way he was if he wasn't English? I doubt it.
