Landlords former worker sold our stuff.. can we do anything?

Due to damage to the building of my old apartment, we had to move out. Our landlord said he would store our stuff though (couch, drawers, beds, etc). Fast forward to us finding a new place to rent and we ask the old landlord about our stuff. He said he doesn't have any of it as a former worker of him screwed him over and sold a bunch of stuff from numerous apartments and fled the county. Old landlord can't find or contact former worker. So that leaves me needing to buy a lot more than I thought for the new place. As the former landlord got screwed over, can I do anything?

It's not your problem the former landlord got screwed, if he even did. The fact is your landlord stored your stuff and now it's gone. He's the one responsible for returning it or finding a suitable solution to remedy the problem.

Only verbal with the former landlord. Just that he would store our stuff in one of his sheds. Nothing written

Did he file a police report for the theft?

As they were your possessions did you have them insured?

If a police report has been made and they were insured you should be able to make a claim.

Didn't outright say whether he reported it to the Garda or not... Seemed more focused on wanting to find his former worker himself!

He would store your stuff for you, or he would allow you to use his shed to store your stuff? Just wondering if he was responsible for its safe keeping, or he just let you use his shed at your own risk

Either way, it appears you know who took your stuff so contact him, and/or the Gardai.
