The backrow options look class! McNabney is fantastic! Rudhan Quinn already capped with Munster and Gleeson looked the business too! Molony played great for Blackrock? I remember him from the sct. Really powerful lad.

Edit! Forgot Mangan! Jesus we are stacked!

Diarmuid Mangan back from injury this weekend. Good to see, will be a key player for the 20s.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,974 ✭✭✭connachta

Hayden Hyde, ex U20 playing with Quins and Baa-baas, had Eng 7's but on Commowealth games.

    Is he still IQ?

    Thank you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,918 ✭✭✭Shehal

He played for England 7s in the 7 series so probably not for now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,974 ✭✭✭connachta

Ok, piers o'conor capped for England in 2019 is now IQ again, though, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,918 ✭✭✭Shehal

As long as its through his parents/grand parents he should be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Rate him personally and scored a great try at the weekend - but reading between the lines McCarthy and Oji seem to be rated ahead of him provincially. Provincial pecking order has been thrown aside for Irish 20s before though.

Back three at this age group seems to be well stacked.

Interestingly, I see McErlean is playing at 10 for Nure this weekend - might be an interesting spanner for the Irish 10 jersey (especially since Prendergast has played fullback for Lansdowne I believe - although he still has standing as last Summer's 20s outhalf)

Munster Academy Update has the Irish 20s playing Munster Development at the end of the month - 20s squad to be selected around now, may already have been.

Great on attack, his defence however is absolutely shocking, one of the worst ive seen for an AIL winger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

What age is Andrew Osbourne. Still 19?

When we say shocking defence do we mean poor positioning or poor tackle technique?

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭LRind2008

A bit of both, sometimes just a real lack of being arsed to even bother attempt the tackle which ive seen on a few occasions, hes plenty of time to grow out of it but even at u20 six nations level it could be badly exposed.

Heres some examples - 6 pretty poor defensive errors in only a 17 minute highlight video is pretty attrocious:

5.14 Flat footed caught in no mans land

11.05 (poor technique, zero fight back to chase back for the kick just disinterested in getting the missed tackle back),

11.36 slow back to his feet doesn’t bother fully chasing back and just gives up.

11.25 very sluggish in adjusting , lazy gets back off the floor swell

13.05 terrible attempt at the tackle, then turns around throws his hands up attempting to blame his team for his error

14.24 again zero attempt to tackle anyone, left in no mans land and doesn’t appear to really give a ****, slowly jogs back disinterested

Not trying to slate him but just adding some actual footage instead of just throwing out unfounded claims

    Sutton

Ireland’s underage squads will gather at the IRFU’s High Performance Centre over the Christmas period between the 28-30th December for the second set of preparation camps to be held this season.

The squads previously assembled in early November for camps with the Ireland U18 Clubs squad travelling to Rome winning impressively 43-10 against their Italian counterparts.

Included in the Ireland U19 squad is Sean Edogbo, younger brother of academy player Edwin, while in the Ireland U18 Schools squad is St Munchin’s student Matt Te Pou son of the former Tongan international of the same name and younger brother of Munster Women’s player Aaliyah.

The squads will have a number of pitch sessions across the three-day camp culminating in in-house matches between the various squads.

In the spring of 2023, the squads will compete on the international stage with the U19s twice taking on their French counterparts, the Ireland U18s squad will compete in the U18s Six Nations Festival and the U18’s Clubs and Schools squad will play two international fixtures over the Easter break.

What position does the younger Matt Te Pou play?

Exciting to see another Edogbo prospect coming along.

Is Ciaran Mangan a brother of Diarmuid Mangan?

I've seen quite a few of the U19s play and been impressed by Oliver Coffey, Wilhelm de Klerk & Hugo McLaughlin.

Surprised Brian Gleeson/Rockwell not involved in wider U19 squad he is still U19 right? Or Evan O Connell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

O Connells with 20s i think and yeah Brian Gleeson is still 19s. Lots of time for movement with these squads especially with the main youths competitions nd schools cups starting soon as well as AIL etc for those finished school. No internationals until March/April and there will be several camps before then

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭Munstermunch

Has there been any U20 Camp's yet? If so anyone know of any of the Munster lads involved at this stage apart from O’Connell, maybe Gleeson would be considered in wider U20 squad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Several camps but wont be any confirmation of people involved until the usual warm up games around christmas against provincial sides.

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭Munstermunch

    They lost 47-50.

very scant report. I saw somewhere elsewhere that Oji scored a try.

Rolling subs so obviously a very practice match vibe.

i just noticed that munster have 3 under 19 guys in this 23, which is impressive.

Very interested in seeing this team play in 6 nations. Few guys like Barret and Lynch the out half that i cant remember seeing play before.

Interesting name in the Ireland #14 jersey, South African schoolboy. Seems to be a really balanced runner, but can't read very much into schools highlights (some of the ones in this very dramatically edited video look like they could be from their Junior Cup equivalent).

I don't know too many of these lads. Should whittle down the numbers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Unless you are watching/checking on youths rugby or schools then you wouldnt.

It will also open up shots for players eligible for 20s playing for Munster who may not have been looked at by Ireland to date...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

South African, Irish eligible and playing in La Rochelle and likely to qualify through residence if he stays.

If he is good enough he will have his choice of nationalities.

    who is the Ireland captain?

james mcnabney captained at u19s, has he retained the role at 20s?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Wont likely know until after 2nd game. I guess. McNabney may well been captain at 19s but always is some who play a 2nd year at 20(and wont have played 19s) who may be looked at ahead of them...

Team to face Leinster Development side named:

    15. Henry McErlean (Terenure/Leinster)

    14. James Nicholson (UCD/Leinster)

    13. Hugh Cooney (Clontarf/Leinster)

    12. Hugh Gavin (Galwegians/Connacht)

    11. Ike Anagu (La Rochelle/IQ Rugby)

    10. Sam Prendergast (Lansdowne/Leinster)

    9. Jack Oliver (Garryowen/Munster)

    1. George Hadden (Clontarf/Leinster)

    2. Gus McCarthy (UCD/Leinster)

    3. Paddy McCarthy (DUFC/Leinster)

    4. Conor O’Tighearnaigh (UCD/Leinster)

    5. Diarmuid Mangan (UCD/Leinster)

    6. James McNabney (Ballymena/Ulster)

    7. Ruadhan Quinn (Old Crescent/Munster)

    8. Brian Gleeson (Garryowen/Munster)

    Replacements:

    16. Danny Sheehan (UCC/Munster)

    17. Jack Boal (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)

    18. Fiachna Barrett (Corinthians/Connacht)

    19. Evan O’Connell (UL Bohemians/Munster)

    20. Jacob Sheehan (UCC/Munster)

    21. Fintan Gunne (Terenure/Leinster)

    22. Harry West (Buccaneers/Connacht)

    23. Rory Telfer (Queen’s University/Ulster)

    24. Joe Hopes (Queen’s University/Ulster)

    25. John Devine (Corinthians/Connacht)

    26. Josh Costello (Shannon/Munster)

Great to see Fintan Gunne on the bench after a long spell injured - serious hype about him on the Leinster side. I'm keen to see Brian Gleeson at 8, as I've only heard good things about him. The 20s look stacked in the back row this year (Diarmuid Mangan, James McNabney, Ruadhan Quinn, Brian Gleeson, Max Dunne).

Most curious to get a look at Ike Anagu on the wing, and see how Sam Prendergast is coming along at 10.

If anyone follows ball handling hooker on twitter, he’s there. 6 players injured in first half already!

    Actually maybe 7 or 8.

Ireland won 35-24… game called three minutes early. Hope none of the injuries are too serious.

Very surprising, scored 4 tries today vs RBAI who are often the standard setters up north

I was at it. Entertaining game at times, with some lovely offloading from both sides, but equally quite disjointed with both sides guilty of forcing things a bit too much at times.

I didn't recognise quite a few of the Leinster Development subs and some of their starting side, but believe a lot of the wider U20s were featuring for them.

Impressive for Ireland for me were Ruadhan Quinn, Sam Prendergast, Brian Gleeson & Gus McCarthy. Fintan Gunne had some nice moments too when introduced. Impressive for Leinster were Aitzol King, Ben Brownlee and (I think) Max Dunne at blindside flanker.

Any of the injuries of a serious nature? Heard Costello went off on crutches
