Understandable it’s all about messi but Mbappe was different class when France got on top, little doubt he’s going to take over as the best in the world very soon!

Scoring both those penalties, serious guts on show.

Oh come on. Don't ask that and not give your own up front.

I think Ronaldo has chosen longevity over commitment, while Messi gave his absolute all in this World Cup.

Love how he just drops, it clearly was a huge weight off his shoulders

Just thinking about the peno's - incredible by Martinez. Saved in the Copa America semi vs Colombia, in the WC vs Netherlands and France. Meanwhile, Lloris saved nothing in their Euro '20 exit to Switzerland or today.

Martinez obviously has a few marbles lost but knows what he's doing in penalty shoot-outs and is the only keeper who has helped Messi lift the 2 international tournaments he's eligible for.

    Finally.

Did anyone notice we didn't have a World Cup Babes thread this year? THanks, Qatar.

The lad behind him looks like he is fighting hard not to bite his lip and give a wink.

    Great goalkeeper but obviously lacking.

In a way fair play to him, but in the other hand, I think lloris and France deserve critism for failing to confront or prepare for Martinez antics.

His stick is trashtalking, dancing on the line and delaying the kicker by making him wait or kicking the ball away. 2 of these 3 can be dealt with by the kicking team.

Watch some of recent Liverpool shootouts. After the opponents kick, Allison will collect the ball and stand near the spot. He will then hand the ball to the next (Liverpool) kicker when he decides he's ready. He'll be the first and last friendly face the kicker sees as he approaches the spot, he'll act as a barrier between the opposition keeper and the kicker, and he'll talk to the kicker and reassure him before taking the shot.

It's actually quite effective - if the opponent wants to walk to the corner the locker will have Allison beside him for support until the opponent is back on his line, and prevents the likes of Martinez kicking the ball away like he did yesterday.

Instead, Lloris the supposed captain and leader was no place to be seen, on his hunkers hiding in the corner.

Take control of things! Everyone knew Martinez was gonna act up, prepare for it and deal with it.

Actually they should not be dealt with by the kicking team they should be dealt with by the ref.

Kicking the ball away is a yellow.

Yeah Martinez antics going unpunished was weird. Keepers can and do use a certain amount but throwing the ball away should be a card.

All keepers must be a bit left of center to play that position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,713 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Yes, however, referees don't deal with it.

Take control, take the wind out of it and set the pace yourself. Everyone knew what he was going to do, take the steam out of it and be prepared.

The GOAT debate was settled, Mbappe has his career ahead of him and has already achieved alot but Messi at 35 just pulled his country through a world cup. I could list his other achievements all day long, no one comes close.

If Mbappe achieves what Messi does and at 35 can drag his country to a world cup, come back to me.

Mbappe was phenomenal once the first penalty went in last night, he also did absolutely nothing as he watched his team get played around with for 80 minutes until Otamendi gifted them a penalty to finally get the momentum going.

He's an incredible talent and has a great career ahead of him but its all ahead of him. Messi is the GOAT, throwing in a young player into the conversation who hasn't won a CL or Ballon Dor yet is nonsense is all im saying.

I was really impressed with the different tactical set ups that Argentina displayed throughout the WC. Hats off to Scaloni for that. Switches from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 and back to 4-3-3 again.

They took the game to France last night and kept their foot on the ball, playing good attacking football with intricate interplay. In other games, we saw them be stodgy and break up play more on the counter. Putting Di Maria in for this game was a great call, his directness hurt France.

Messi was brilliant in that opening 70 mins too. His career building up to this game, and he delivered. at 35. Undisputed GOAT!

Does anyone else just absolutely fking hate the term "GOAT"

Don't mind a good debate about who the best ever is I just hate the acronym.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,065 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

It's just the latest measure of talent that has lost all meaning by now

    See "World Class" for precedent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,463 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I just hate saying it, if I'm saying it I'll say "greatest of all time", if im typing it I'll put down GOAT

I agree I only learnt what it was a few years ago! First thought was did those Kerry 70's and 80's football lads come up with at the puc fair?!!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

On this WC on RTE - I think there should be a shake up after this full time

    1) Best analyst - Joey Ndoh - the fella is a legend as far as I am concerned had me in stitches great craic

    2) Most improved analyst - Stephanie Roche and Stephen Kelly (nice delivery and good way about them)

    3) Best co-commentator - Alan Cawley - kicks every ball no matter who is playing and really gets into it.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

One thing I ended up loving about this World Cup was the accurate time added on for stoppages. We saw some mental added on minutes early on but players became aware that there was very little benefit to play acting or any other time wasting because it would all be added on eventually. Consequently we did end up seeing the times come down I think(don’t have data for that but it certainly felt that way). Disappointing to hear the PL doesn’t have plans to follow suit.

What I absolutely hated, was seeing this “let it flow” mentality from referees. So many fouls go unpunished so as to not disturb the flow of the game. It feels so backwards as a concept - like it’s the referees responsibility to not only ensure the players are following the rules but to also ensure that the match is a spectacle. It also further engrains fouling as a legitimate tactic in the game which is bizarre to me. Would love to see it just go back to referees calling fouls as they see them.
