True…At least Kenny was a professional footballer and respected international…. Crap pundit he might be yes, but he has pedigree and experience even if he tends to have me pressing mute..

Cawley looking at his stats… every club he played for, he was there for less then two years….. less then a year in some cases so not everyone was enamoured with having him around a club, hopefully he’s jettisoned from RTE.

👍When you contrast it to how the team that end up one place higher than them(second) will be reacting tomorrow….

I don't see another one coming in the foreseeable future tho tbh

Nobody can say, but there is great young players coming (Guardiol, Majer, Sutalo, Jakic, Sucic etc etc...) in team. There is bright future for Croatian football. Guardiol is just 20 years old and he will be probably best young player at this WC. City offering 130 millions for him!

No ots too early to rate him but he is very good. I have seen some brilliant players in my time apart from Messi who I think is the best, Pele, Maradona, Eusabio, Muller, Platini, Berfkamp and Henry and i'm sure there's many I can't just think of now.

yes but Modric has been the player that has got Croatia through to those stages in both this (with a bit of luck, Brazil should have won in normal time) and the last world cup.

because of the fact that Croatia is a small country he has been the most influential player in international football over the last 10 years.

The Modric era is now over.

    And he is not replaceable.

Well Messi did vote for Roni in (I think) two of the Ballon'Dor awards. But Ronaldo never voted for Messi... obviously out of pettiness. I guess Messi put aside any personal feelings towards Ronaldo after his childish insults... or else he just knew he was so much better than him that Roni's insults never annoyed him anyway.

Turkey have disappeared from the football radar.

    🙈🙉🙊

I remember 1998. everybody said .. This is it. Who will replace Boban, Suker, Prosinecki? And new generation come.

Now I can see few players can jump in Modric shoes. In Dinamo Zagreb (today in Croatian team played 3 players

from Dinamo (Orsic, Petkovic, Livakovic)) there is young players with great future.. Brkljaca (18), Bulat (21), Spikic (23) a just example of players who will soon play for best European teams and lead Croatian national team in the future. You don't know them... yet. But You will. 😉 We have great football school. Dani Olmo, Spain midfielder is raised in dinamo school of football.

yes I don't know them and I also know that Croatia obviously has a good culture of producing sound technical footballers but all the same the chances of one of those guys you speak of going on to be a Modric in terms of the overall qualities present (the combination of intelligence in both attack and defence and the on-pitch leadership that produced for Croatia) there is slim - imo.

    but obviously time will tell

    Something doesn't add up there...

Argentina Saudi was a 10am start here. 10am here being 4am in Argentina would mean 3pm here being 9am in Argentina...

My mistake, it was 7 am in Argentina.

And people said the same thing when Boban retired. As a matter of fact I'd rate Boban as a better player than Modric if not for Luka's longevity.

Zvonimir Boban is probably one of the most underrated footballers of the last 25 years.

he was a joy to watch.. stayed at AC Milan for 10 years plus and won..

    Serie A (4): 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1995-1996, 1998-1999; Italian Supercup (3): 1992, 1993, 1994; UEFA Champions League (1): 1993-1994; UEFA Super Cup (1): 1994

3rd place with Croatia in the 1998 World Cup.

effortlessly stylish, selfless, skillful, intelligent… great to watch.

Boban was more a forward where Modric is a midfielder…. Their goal scoring shows that… Modric an excellent player but his goals to game’s ratio is average for an attacking midfielder. Something like 1 in 8

Boban scored 21 goals in 11 seasons at Milan in 178 games

Less than 1 goal per 8 games played.

    More like 1 per 9.

    Hardly a scoring powerhouse..

Modric scored twice as many goals as him for Croatia, not modric's "fault" he lasted so long.

But modric is far more about the intelligence in attack and defence and dictating leadership play anyway. I never even mentioned goals.

Modric has been alone as a true world class player in the Croatian team and was most influential in getting them to a final and a third place.

Boban was a great player but was there in the days when Croatia had multiple world class operators and got one third place

You do realize that to judge a player you need to do it over their career….. I’ve already enabled you with info as to what trophies he won as a keystone starter of that Milan team, you’d need a truck to haul those trophies and medals but you want to argue it , fair play to you… 😉 he was not a striker, he was an attacking midfielder..

68 goals in 308 games for Boban at club level…

Croatia were a class team then, Suker etc… but they have multiple trophy winners in their ranks now too.

1954 World Cup in Switzerland seemed like great one. A lot of high scoring games, the highest goals to match ratio in WC history(5.38 goals per game). This current WC is averaging 2.63 GPM. Austria beat Switzerland 7-5 in the knockout stages. Hungary beat S Korea 9-0.

Hungary beat west Germany 8-3 in the group. They eventually met in the final. Hungary were 2-0 up after 8 mins, Germans equalised shortly after and got a winner in the 84th min to win 3-2.

In qualification there was nothing separating Spain and Turkey so a blindfolded Italian boy drew lots and Turkey was selected. All in all was a mad one.

Holy fck, RTÉ lot off on a righteous drive again. Just shut the hell up and try to talk about football, that's what you're supposed to be there for on World Cup final day.

Joanne is up against it here

Duff losing it. 'Cheating' ffs. Back-pedalling now. Eejits.

Seems you need to be controversial if not inflammatory now above else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,850 ✭✭✭archfi

I think Argentina will do it today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

That was an absolute clown show.

Duff needs to lay off whatever it is he's smoking.

Coach and player plays tactically to the game in front of him = cheating.

    No Damien. No.

I don't understand why he thinks Messi/Mbape are cheating?

Glad Liam and Didi called him out
