Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is TuneIn on Google Home being an absolute pain for anyone else yesterday and today. Starts streaming fine (even RTÉ!) but then just hangs - a lot! - after somewhere between 5 and 50 minutes. Tell it to play the station again, and it might just pick up again, or it might play the TuneIn ads first.

Today's Google Home gripe: If I say "Play my playlist Daily Mix 2 (or whatever) on Spotify", that does not mean "Play some chancer's album on Spotify that he's named 'Daily Mix 2' - I clearly emphasised the word 'playlist', didn't I?!"

    Hi all,

Relatively new to using Google Home but not new to IoT as in I have about 15 WiFi plugs controlling lights and fishtank etc, a Google Home, 5-6 Google Mini's and Chromecasts etc plus I have a Tado smart thermostat.

To date I've mainly set schedules for each device using the native app so lots of schedules on the Kasa app (some Teckin and Tapo also), the Tado app and only really used the Google Home app for the Google Home, Google Mini's and a couple of JBL smart speakers with Google Assistant built in but I recently decided to connect all of the devices to the Google Home app via the "Works With Google" linking option and thankfully everything I have linked fine.

I've now organised all the various devices into rooms and I like how Google Home allows me to have everything on one dashboard so to speak rather than having to use all the native apps to control devices.

My next challenge is to replicate all the various on / off schedules for lights etc using the "Routines" option in Google Home which I'm getting to grips with but I can't seem to find a way to add an "off" option to a routine e.g. I can set a routine to turn several lights on at sunset but I can't see an option to turn them all off at a particular time per day or after X hours of being on etc.

Am I missing something obvious? Do I need to set up a separate routine which just turns everything off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

Yes, been ages since I set mine up, but IIRC I had to set up separate routines for 'turn lights on at sunset' and 'turn lights off at midnight'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭54and56

Thanks, that's more or less what I ended up doing.

One thing I've noticed is that I regularly get notifications from Google Home that some device or other didn't turn either on or off when the respective routine ran. Never had this issue when the native apps were running on / off schedules. Is this something Google Home routines (which are a relatively new feature) struggle with currently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

Yeah, in my opinion, they were released too early; I'd consider them still beta/buggy. Like, if it a night routine (keyword triggered with something like 'Goodnight') can't find one of three lights to turn off because it's already been turned off, it won't just turn off the other two, it'll go "THERE WAS A PROBLEM TURNING OFF THE BEDROOM LIGHT!" - yeah, thanks, Google, now the light is still off but we're all awake.

What JBL smart speakers with Google Assistant built-in do you have and where did you get them? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭54and56

Its the JBL Link 10, really amazing speaker. Excellent review here - https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/jbl-link-portable

It was called the Link Portable when I bought mine (I have 2 of them) but they've since added a bigger model called the Link 20 so the original was renamed the Link 10.

I got mine from Richer Sounds.

I got their other branded Harmon karden speaker and great sound but would not buy again. The level of features is limited and they had no intention of enabling voice calling etc!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,053 ✭✭✭wait4me

I actually picked up two JBL Links from the JBL UK site. Richersounds did not have any in stock and didn't know when they would be in stock. The JBL site had them at half price so they may be discontinuing them. Had to get them delivered to a UK address though

Are they ever going integrate hue zones with google home?very annoying not being able to ask google to switch off an entire zone!!

The bug with playing any RTÉ stations is back for me this morning. Just hangs there with the logo and the 'loading' bar. Then the hub failed to recognise commands to play alternate stations on TuneIn from voice, had to select it from the screen when it came up as an option. Is the problem with RTÉ, TuneIn, or Google?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,053 ✭✭✭wait4me

The functionality of the hub is coming into question in my house these days. Cannot play RTE Radio 1 on two of hem; but RTE Radio 1 will play on any of the Google speakers and Alexa also plays it on a display

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yeah same here. Minis are fine, hub is broken.

I "send feedback" once a day.

I think the last time this happened, it was gone for 3 or 4 weeks.

None of my can respond to "what time is it"

Same here with rte channels, speakers are working fine besides, even with other channels.

All this stuff we hear about AI over the last few months and they can't make a device that can play a radio station consistently or tell the time 😁 Although I'm guessing the RTE radio issues are to do with RTE. I bought a Home Hub for my Mam. Got fed up with trying to troubleshoot RTE (I get blamed as I introduced the device to her house) and bought her an old radio that works 100% of the time.

The potential for Google Home and Alexa is great but there's been no functionality added over the last couple of years that I'm aware of. All I seem to use mine for is to set an alarm or turn off lights (and they lose connection to random lights occasionally too).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 666 ✭✭✭Fishy1

I emailed RTÉ about this issue & got the following response:

Thanks for getting in touch with the Information Office. These issues are something we're aware of and we have been liaising with these third-party providers (Google, TuneIn, Apple) to identify what has changed and what resolution can be reached. Unfortunately, we have no information or timeline for a fix.

We have google home devices dotted around the house, and they work well for the most part. I love how we can play music on a combination of the speakers, depending on the need. We had a bit of a party on Friday, and I found that the speakers weren't quite loud enough. I put my google home audio and original google home in the same room, both on full blast, which kindof did the trick, but I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with any other beefier speakers? I don't want to lose any of the google assistant features, so I'm a bit wary of moving to a third party speaker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,053 ✭✭✭wait4me

Isn't it odd that it will work with Alexa and Alexa gets the link from TuneIn.

I have a third party speaker (Harmon kardon citation 500), and the sound quality and capability (loudness) is fantastic.

However, as your other point, it does not keep up to date with Google features, such as voice calling is not possible with it. I raised an issue on this with Harmon and they basically said they have no plans to keep up to date with these type of features.

So, I think steer away from them, try and keep to Google manufactured speakers, and I think doubling up/pairing the latest Google home speakers gives excellent sound quality almost compatible to the Harmon, but guarantees all the features, and is actually cheaper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭RonnieL

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't seen that speaker before. I don't mind the lack of calling, since I don't use that feature anyway, but perhaps getting a couple of nest audios is the way to go from a value perspective. I'd just have 1 in the room most of the time, and then if it's a party, I can plug in the second. Thanks again.

The harmon Costs about 400 euro, and no doubt the audio quality is excellent, but it's frustrating knowing that it won't keep up with Google features despite it being a Google assistant speaker as advertised.

At 400 euro and with the fact that it will not keep up to date with the latest Google features, I would not recommend it, and instead, if I had the chance again, I would purchase 2 of the latest Google devices and pair them. I think the audio quality will not be far off what you get with the Harmon for most uses. Either that or the Google max speaker, but I think they have stopped producing those.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭RonnieL

Yeah they discontinued the google max speaker, which seems odd to me - but I'm sure there's a reason. Interesting also that Sonos just released new speakers and have moved away from google integration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭fman

The Sonos thing is an ongoing legal battle between the 2. Nothing to confirm that the new stuff will or won't include Google long term, but yes if that's your main worry then avoid the new Sonos stuff for now at least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 105 ✭✭majo

Like some of the other posters here, no RTE radio stations are playing on my Google Nest for the past few days.

Very frustrating, as all the non-RTE stations are playing without any problem.

  • Registered Users Posts: 105 ✭✭majo

Would you mind sharing the RTE email address that you used please? Maybe if enough people contact them, they might actually look into this issue properly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 666 ✭✭✭Fishy1

It’s back! As of this evening I’m able to get RTÉ Radio 1 & LyricFM on my Google Nest. I haven’t tried my Google Home yet.

For future reference the email address I used to contact RTÉ was : Info@rte.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Back for me too (hub). Thank God!

  • Registered Users Posts: 105 ✭✭majo

I see Samantha Libreri (RTÉ) was tweeting about this issue yesterday. Maybe that got them to look into it properly!

A load of responses, too, from people with the same problem - wasn't working on Alexa either, apparently. Fixed now, so yay. My own Hub is next to my desktop at home, so rather than hunt the radio I'd left out in the shed, I downloaded the tune-in app to the PC for emergencies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭dball

Any way of listening to a show from the "Listen back" option from the RTE Radio Player app .

I can listen to it on my phone - no problem but I want to stream it to a smart speaker. Lenovo Smart Alarm Clock - This has a built in hey Google feature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

If it's available as a podcast, you can "cast" it to a google speaker.

For example, I've streamed some Brendan O'Connor content and Playback on demand on my Google speakers.

We play Playback on Saturday morning from a podcast instead of live radio because it doesn't have any ads (Playback is released as a podcast the day before it airs on the radio)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭dball

I think you are right, they've obviously restricted the playback of music shows

it's only available as a listen back option and not as a podcast.

I've just figured out that i can use the CAST option from my phone to play it but it's quality is poor

    Thanks again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭timetogo1

My google devices are talking to me in a US accent now when we ask them to set an alarm.

For all other queries / tasks it answers in the normal more British accent that we have it set to . I checked the settings in Google Home and it's set to the accent we had it normally set to.

Anybody else have this or now how to fixt it. It's a first world problem but it's a bit annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

I've not encountered that on the Hub or smart speakers, but on several occasions previously when using Google Maps on the phone for navigation, it switched from British female voice (the default) to nasal American voice and back again - once or twice, on the same roundabout! It's been a few years since it last happened.

I had it change to an indian female accent randomly a few times, was hilarious, never figured out why, hasn't done it in a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭fman

The same rte problem has come back for me overnight. Again they will play in the TuneIn app on my phone but can't be cast or played by voice commands from the devices.

Edit: scratch that, seems to be a different TuneIn/Google issue I'm having, not just Rte specific.

Anybody's Home app acting up? My app loads but promptly closes down. This has just started to happen. (My Phone is OnePlus 8). The problem for me is that my Nest Doorbell is linked to the app so now I have little/no control over it. Google Home is becoming a bit of a pain.
