    Spotted lights in the sky around midnight. Thought it was a drone at first. Checked it on flight radar. Why the pattern and why at night?

    Yesterday evening a Swiss flight to the US turned back about an hour past the northwest coast of Ireland and diverted to Manchester. It was due to a medical situation. Why would they not land in Dublin?

    Ok, i thought a medical emergency would get priority landing. They got there just in time as Manchester airport is blocked up with snow today.

    The crew will almost certainly have consulted with the company in order to determine where they should divert to. The difference in time terms between diverting to Manchester rather than Dublin is probably not material unless the aircraft itself is experiencing a serious problem.

    Looks like fog has hit ORK now as well. EI841 from AMS is still in the hold since before 11. EI711 from LHR is on approach to ORK now as well which will probably end up holding as well.

    Yup, 11:30 METAR gives an RVR of 250m for RWY16, for CAT II ILS most aircraft require 300m+.


    Surprised at how long EI841 is sticking around.

    Yes, at least 16 laps of the holding pattern over Grenagh. Off to Shannon now by the look of it.

    BA255 LHR BGI is diverting to SNN as well on a medical emergency. They just declared a Pan Pan

    KL1085 from Amsterdam went to Shannon as well. I know that because I was on it.

    It got messy too. After holding off Dungarvan for five laps, the captain announced the decision to go to Shannon was because the weather was worse than expected, and also because of a technical issue at Cork of some sort that wasn't resolved in the ten minutes they promised.


    So off we toddled to Shannon, where we had to hold again as a medical emergency had to land from a transatlantic. I was half expecting to go to Dublin at that stage, as there had to have been thoughts of fuel at that stage.


    Very good crew though, I have to say. Pilot out to apologise to everyone - even carried a young child down the steps.

    Captain asked for DUB and BFS weather while in the hold in SNN for the medical emergency. The BA aircraft was heavy so a quick runway inspection had to be carried out after landing but the fact he was able to make the turn at taxiway alpha shortened the wait time which the KLM crew were happy about.

    Thanks. Maybe Belfast would have been better as then they'd have probably flown us to Cork rather than bussing down from Shannon!


    Always a bit frustrating to see your aircraft flying overhead from Shannon to Cork while you're in traffic in Buttevant on the bus, but thats just the way things go.

    The Belfast airports are not generally favoured as a diversion for flights bound for DUB/SNN/ORK. I'm not quite sure why - there could be several reasons, including that it is in a different jurisdiction and now not in the EU.

    How come the C130s fly through Irish airspace but the transport jets seem to always go around?

    That's my understanding - they don't have over-fly rights if they are carrying weapons as we're "neutral".

    The C-5s and C-17s have avoided Irish airspace fairly consistently for many years now. It can't just be to do with carrying weapons etc. as many flights don't carry anything very hazardous. I suspect they enjoy fairly unrestricted passage through UK airspace as opposed to having to get diplomatic clearance every time for Ireland.

    EI266 just gone around twice at windy BHX. Took a big wind hit left just prior to touchdown. Looks like going for a third try.

    Edit: No, gone up and levelled off at 8000ft hdg 026.

    Left now for MAN?

    Anyone know what happened with FR5325 on December 18th? Diverted to CGN on its way from Kosice to Dublin. Wondering why, I was however on that plane earlier last week and it was leaking water from the ceiling on departure, might have escalated since, as it looks like the plane hasn't flown since the flight above.

    Pretty much is weapons, they will go right up to the west coast then literally do a sharp turn north or south to enter the UK instead of their original track which would have brought them over Mayo/Galway.

    You seem to be assuming that all USAF AMC aircraft are carrying weapons. I highly doubt that, but Irish sovereign airspace is avoided by near-100% of these aircraft all the same.

    I'm guessing taking advantage of the wind to speed up the journey and save fuel.

    Or more likely since the aircraft flew from LA the route it took was actually the shortest when you consider the curvature of the Earth it only looks odd to us because we are viewing the map in 2D.
