Stunning morning here in Maynooth. Still minus 4 with the app telling me it feels like -7. Amazing.

I got it wrong. This is a proper cold snap. Really enjoyed going for a walk yesterday evening. Really calm and clear sky was nice. Another few inches of snow now would go down well.

a gorgeous morning in its own way in D16. Dropped the kids off to creche in running buggy and the sound of the ice cracking under the wheels as we ran was very soothing. Kids faces were a bit rosey by the time we got to the creche, lol. Creche very quiet though.

On the one hand, nice to leave the car at home, on the other hand would have been a great chance to try out "snow mode" on the EV. lol

I remember my late father in law telling me that working on building sites during the very cold winter of 63 for example that if his car door was locked with frost/ ice and he couldn't get the key in he would pee on the lock which did the trick when there was no other way. Lol

NO joke I did exactly that in the freeze of 2010. It was a fiat punto though so didn't mind pissing on it 😂

The bright sun has revealed a winter wonderland.

Yesterday was the earliest sunset of the year (4:15pm). It won't get any earlier than that again and should start to set later in a week or so.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Temperatures making very little effort this morning, at 10am it's -2°c Dublin Airport and clear, -1°c Cork Airport and clear, -4°c Shannon Airport in freezing fog and -5°c Kerry airport and clear.

Looks like Dublin airport were caught on the hop again with 2/4 De-icers reportedly out if action. A lot of people sitting on delayed flights.

The lack of wind chill really makes this cold nice to walk in. Similar to when people say the cold in Canada doesn't feel as bad as here. I know what they mean now. Real still Artic air.

Maybe off topic but nothing to do with Dublin Airport, ground handling of the airline look after de-icing

What are the up to date thoughts on snow prospects over the next few days? I appreciate its a dry, slack flow but you'd think there is some chance of showers bubbling up and coming in off the sea on either coast depending on wind direction over the next few days?

Also had to do it a push. But if at home warm (not boiling) water will do the job! Out the hot tap rather than kettle.

No snow in D5, so we don't get the fun stuff to compensate but we do get the downsides of dodgy roads and footpaths & a power cut this morning to boot :(

So I feel like this guy.

On the way to work today I saw 3 cyclists take a tumble...it beggars belief that there are some people willing to go out on bikes on a morning like this...Darwin awards incoming...

I left my car in Rathfarnham last night with the plan being to run up for it this morning, but that won't be happening, it's like an ice rink out there at the moment.

I went to the back for turf and the strangest skies..

Blue and clear to the front but to north and to the sides over the ocean bizarre edges of dark snow- like heavy blue sky edged with white clouds with the occasional truncated rainbow..Never seen the like,,on the

Did not linger as my feet were iced... but summat is i cumin in!

Minus 1 in Sligo and raining for those of you who said that was impossible.

There's no way wel get snow now if we can't get it at those temperatures.

Or get a warm bag of water and put it up against it, great for clearing tough ice on the screen also.

Ensure its warm and not hot

Thin layer of snow here in North Dub and solid ice.

You can see the difference this time of year vs the Beast from the East. Sun shining on pavement and not a solitary sign of melt.

It's really beautiful and the window for this really only until the end of January when more solar radiation gets through and you would see melt regardless of whether the air temp was sub-zero.

This is great but quite dodgy for driving/walking. Probably more so the latter.

Yeah, it's nuts, who'd have thought blowing hot air onto ice could melt it?

Obviously, if the ice is thick hard ice, it'll take a long time, but in conditions like this morning, it would be fine to unfreeze a stuck lock or loosen the frost that's holding the door closed. Done it before, only took a minute or two

Strange Ballyhaise was -5 shortly after 6am still at -4

There's a lot more electrics in car doors now than there was in 1963.

Not everyone has the luxury of other options. Lots of people need to get to work to get food on the table for this weekend. Lots of people have journeys that aren't practical by public transport. Cycling carefully with MTB tyres on a busy road, where the snow and ice has been cleared by lots of heavy traffic may well be safer that walking on an uncleared path.

There’s no way the minimum at Ballyhaise was only -2, it was a lot colder than that. Those figures are the usual rubbish from the incompetants in Met Éireann.
