Premier League Radio Broadcasting rights in the Republic of Ireland 2022-2025.

Hard to find complete information on who has what. I know that Newstalk has the rights on Sunday, while Talksport has rights till 2025. Also it seems BBC Radio 5 Live has rights here. Heres a screenshot from the Premier League rights section.

I have a real issue with Talksport, a station that doesn’t have a terrestrial license here, having been granted the rights. I know it’s AM signal can be picked up in many areas but it’s not ideal. Modern cars (and let’s face it that’s the main place people will be listening to sports coverage on the radio) may have smartphone integration but we’re not yet at the stage where that can be taken for granted (Toyota didn’t introduce CarPlay/Android Auto till as late as 2019).

Today FM’s Premier League Live coverage was excellent. Not sure if they withdrew and no one else was bothered or if Talksport outbid them.

Yes, its odd that Talksport got them despite their lack of terrestrial coverage here. I thought it would be a factor to be considered when awarding potential broadcast rights. I'm only four or five miles from the border with NI, and even here the AM reception (1089 Khz from Lisnagarvey) is barely adequate. Its poor enough at nighttime.

It's available via its app with the Irish version doing commentaries. Is Talksport available on the Sky RoI EPG? Its at 0108 on the UK version.

Not a substitute though for proper terrestrial coverage.

No virtually all the radio stations apart from the Irish ones and one or two others were removed from Sky in Ireland after Brexit. That’s not really a biggy for me, you’ll get them all on a smart speaker which can be purchased pretty cheaply now (as cheap as an FM radio really at this stage), and if I was at home I’d be watching Sky/BT anyway rather than listening to the radio coverage. No it’s the out of home coverage that’s the issue for me.

Talksport is part of the same group as FM104 etc, so it is a renewal of the previous approach where various local stations offer coverage on their apps

Talksport don’t seem to have PL rights for Sunday in the RoI. The 12pm Chelsea v Arsenal game is listed in the schedule but isn’t on. Newstalk not covering it either.

They are on Newstalk in ROI.

But Off the Ball doesn’t normally come on air till 1pm and this was an unusually early (for a Sunday televised game) 12 noon kick off - think it was effectively BT’s Saturday KO moved to Sunday because of Arsenal’s Europa League fixture.

Normally yes, but as ICDG suggests this was a Saturday match shifted to Sunday because of European committments. Interesting that it was blocked in the RoI though.

Whats going on with the radio commentaries on 5Live and Talksport? The first few days they were all available to listen to online but then suddenly they are blocked! It was handy to listen to at work!

Completely baffling if you ask me. Either the Republic of Ireland has the rights to them or they don't. Weird to start off with them in the clear, and then suddenly they are blocked.

Not sure if I'll get a response or not, but I've used the Premier League's contact form to enquire re on what days of the week do each broadcaster have rights for in the RoI. It would be nice to know to clear up the confusion.
