Heading back over to Bristol early next week, so I stuck in another order with Wogan Coffee - top quality beans the last 2 times I've bought them. Look at these prices - even with the price of my flight to and from Bristol (tenner each way) I doubt you'd get this sort of selection for the price I'm paying, travel to collect them included. 250g bags of each to keep the weight in the luggage down

You need to set up a franchise for them here Hodors!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,459 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

it was a disaster! I ordered them on Thursday 1st Dec thinking they'd be delivered Friday or Monday - not to be, they hadn't arrived to my BiL's house by the time I was due to fly back on Weds, some Royal Mail postal issue (I think there are strikes)

I actually went into the shop on Tuesday to ask what was going on and they said they'd sent the beans.

I'll have to get my relations to freeze them when they do arrive, and bring them over to me at xmas

So annoying that you can get beans online cheaper ( sometimes INCLUDING shipping) than face to face in bricks and mortar shops of the same chain ! Bear market ( Decathlon) and Coffee Angel( Off Grafton Strreet) definite culprits here ( although both do smashing coffee in general) where in last month I’ve had to leave their premises and return home to get best price. Also some places are unrealistically dear without codes etc .Running out of email addresses :-(

I took this hobby up to save money on whiskey but sure, fast forward twelve months and it’s as dear :-(

The Brady beans in Lidl ( although they downsized bag from 250 to 227 to 200g and were coy about it for a few weeks even denying it in emails ) and Velo Tandem in Aldi seem to be last chance at half decent beans without breaking bank .

I find a 1kg bag just a bit too much for a month and can notice the deterioration towards end but any other size bag from ‘specialists ‘ are silly money

Anyone got any advice other than ‘don’t be such a tighta55’?!

You can import coffee from Germany for less than it costs in Ireland, and if you want to try your hand at roasting and buy raw beans, you can halve that lower price again.

I freeze all my roasted coffee, so no decline in taste towards the end of a bag.

Agreed on the outrageous prices, particularly for whole beans, anything over 40e a kilo is just not worth it, and most ( apart from niche) are unjustified.

I go through 2kg a month though, so just can't justify paying those prices tbh

It's a shame because if local B and M sold at reasonable prices, we'd all be better off.

Sorry if not new news or previously shared but Velo India Ratnagiri Estate is on offer in Dunnes Stores and seems to be significantly cheaper than direct from Velo. I'm really enjoying it. Available in both whole bean and ground.

€5.99 for 200g (was €6.99 or €10 direct from Velo)

€14.99 for 700g (was €19.99 or €26 direct from Velo)

    Did you not check delivery?

Royal mail strikes have been all over the news and social media.

There's a clip of the Bristol sorting centre with hundreds of cages in the car park.

    10-14 days is the estimate.

Knock on effects on other carriers too as companies using them more than normal.

Sorry I wasn't keeping an eye on postal strikes in the UK

    Not at all: https://www.mondodelcaffe.de/produkt-kategorie/kaffees/

They have a wide variety of coffees including raw beans. They are actually in Luxemburg but are on the border with Germany.

Tried that German / Lux site. 1.5kg beans, including shipping and charges was 55 euro for me. Not actually a saving per kilo compared to Coffee Angel or Dream Beans as far as I can see.

Maybe if I bought multiple kilos but I wouldn't have the freezer space, not sure would be worth it anyway tbh.

Shipping to Ireland is Ireland: €15.60 for 2.5kg to 30kg, so it's really more of a large batch order, in order to save money (I bought 10kg of green for my last order). They have some pretty interesting products. Would have liked to try their advent calendar, but it's a little late now.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,380 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

If I had a second freezer then I can see how I could bulk order and store the coffee till needed, and save about 50%, but as it stands just wouldn't have freezer space to the point where it would be worth it. There's a bit of me as well that would be into supporting Irish businesses.

Btw... If you guys tell me you're ordering other groceries from Germany to save money my mind will be blown!

If you don't max the shipping weight, you will get that result. I quoted that site because I wasn't sure if the person asking was interested in raw beans or not. The shipping adds a lot. As I mentioned, green beans don't require freezing.

A recent order was for €136, for 5kg, 2 of which were green, so €27 per kg. the latest order was for mostly green beans as the experiment exceeded my expectations and is even cheaper per Kg than that.

I have ordered Paté de frois gras from both Germany and France, on occasion.

Not being off topic but there are benefits to supporting small irish roasters in terms of employment, jobs, lower taxes for us all as a result, spin off business etc.

With the exception maybe of the likes of 3fe and Bear etc, a lot of places are not creaming it in, but just making a living for themselves. If there was a postal strike tomorrow many might be glad of being able to call into our local cafe for some fresh beans, so it's good to support them for other reasons than price sometimes. That's obviously a personal decision though.

I'm buying the same raw ingredient those roasters are, though they benefit from economies of scale. I just choose to prepare it myself. Paying them to do it for me would be akin to a charitable donation. I wouldn't be against it, but there are needier causes. Support local business where it is economical and sustainable to do so (getting coffee delivered in 250g bags isn't exactly environmentally friendly). I still buy prepared coffee from my local coffee shops when I'm in the office, but the roasting process holds no magic for me any more, and I don't see that they are adding sufficient value to justify the cost they charge.

The Irish goverment forces the subsidisation of huge swathes of the Irish economy, in blatant thumbing of their noses at the principles of the common market and free trade, which cost me very large sums of money. It's a huge part of why Ireland is so expensive, so it's my personal decision to try and make up a tiny amount gouged by the forced local buys and local subsidies through savings in other areas not yet stiched up the government.
