Zelesnky has responded in the best way possible - the situation is hugely regretable, and terrible for the loss of life in Poland, but to repeat what everyone already knows: the action that led to this tragedy was caused by Russia who are operating beyond any kind of law or morality, and are hell bent on destroying Ukraine, its people and culture, all of which Moscow openly despises. Ukraine is fighting for its life for God's sake. Some day Europe will emerge out of this war a safer, more secure place and we will owe Ukraine our thanks for it.

For doing what others here did: claiming it was a Russian attack before the facts were out. A rare own goal on his part and will be used to undermine him in future

    Holy ****!

    Is this for real?

    Russia's firing missiles at Ukraine

    Ukraine firing them at Poland!

    When will the madness end?!

It may be an understandable reaction given the desperate circumstances in which his country finds itself, but I don't think declaring this a deliberate Russian attack on Poland before the evidence was in can reasonably be described as 'the best possible response' from Zelensky. His critics and enemies in the West will be using this episode to bolster their (weak) case that he is duplicitous, untrustworthy, playing us for fools etc...

"Stoltenberg says Ukrainian air defences the 'likely' cause of blast

Stoltenberg continues by saying the incident in Poland was "likely" caused by the activity of Ukraine's air defence systems - echoing the view of the Polish president.

But the Nato chief is clear that "Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine".

    There's that "likely" again

Is there anyone that isn't dangerously stupid listening to these "critics in the west"?

Countries are announcing continuing military aid this morning, Sweden 8 times more than they have already given.

These critics can fúck off TBH.

We could also be looking at a scenario where Poland could be engaging Russian missiles in Ukraine, whatever about NATO or the EU, Poland are fully entitled to defend themselves.

Biden already announced another 34 billon in aid yesterday if I read correctly .

Since day one of this war people have been falsely claiming support has being waining from the eu ,nato and the us , people are bored people are freezing to death , people are starving Ukraine should give up and surrender.

    But yet here we are

Zelensky was too quick to blame Russian but it’s understandable. Great to see calm heads prevail.

On the other hand anyone solely blaming the Ukraine for the accident is akin to blaming the rape victim for their choice of clothing etc.

I'd imagine the Russians were panicking there for a moment yesterday! Hopefully they’ll now realise how close they are to a potential all out conflict with NATO.

Yep, I agree. But in the white heat of the rockets attacks yesterday on Ukraine, I can forgive that rush to judgement. As the news was breaking last night, I fully expected it to be the work of Russia, such is their moth-to-the-flame irrationality they have demostrated throughout this war. If anything can be salvaged from this incident, it should be that NATO supplies Ukraine with better missile-defense systems

We could also be looking at a scenario where Poland could be engaging Russian missiles in Ukraine, whatever about NATO or the EU, Poland are fully entitled to defend themselves.

But in this case Poland needed to defend themselves against Ukraine, not Russia.

Russia did not launch missiles at or strike Poland.

Zelensky can't afford to take that attitude, he is entirely dependent on western military assistance to prosecute this war. With the Republicans likely to take control of the House that aid might not be as forthcoming as it has been up to now.

Obviously this (apparent) 'friendly fire' incident is a minor detail in the broader context but Zelensky has to strive to prove himself the anti-Putin in every respect...

The very key question anyone who's planning on blaming Ukraine here needs to ask themselves before they scutterpost their "opinion"... Is why was Ukraine firing that rocket in the first place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,096 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

For obvious reasons Ukraine would like to see it's allies have skin in the game so to speak. So it's natural they would jump on any pretext to expand the theatre to other countries.

At the end of the day they have nothing to lose. They are under attack and fighting for their existence as a country.

The rest of us have everything to lose by being roped in to this conflict and I think Zelensky made a bad judgement call yesterday because it was just too transparent but it's been this way since the start of the war.

I think they need to be a bit more tactful or they do risk losing some support.

Yesterday could easily have led to a serious miscalculation without the facts.

"But in this case Poland needed to defend themselves against Ukraine, not Russia."

Ukraine did not attack Poland and even if it is shown to be an air defense missile landed in Poland it was targeted at the huge number of missiles fired by russia into the entire area of Ukraine. The russians are not targeting the front lines of the Ukraine armed forces but civilians and those in areas of Ukraine close to the borders with other countries. Also saw a report yesterday that one of the russian launched missiles actually landed in russia killing 4 in the area of Shebikino. If russia is launching these quantities of weapons then a percentage will hit areas that were not set as their target and it does not mean Poland needs to defend themselves from Ukraine but that every country in Europe needs to do more to help Ukraine stamp out the terrorist actions of russia. As well as speeding up more up to date air defence systems to Ukraine I think NATO needs to supply Ukraine now with the means to stop these missiles being launched at all including the weapons that can hit airfields and aircraft in russia and belarus.

Surely they have everything to lose ?? Their very existance for one thing. One must understand that Russian ideology considers all those former Soviet republics as less than pure Russian, and they are people to be ruled and subjugated. Who would want to live under those conditions ?

Russia has banned the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and 50 odd other Ministers and senior officials from Ireland from entering Russia, for supporting the EU sanctions and other measures against the Russian invasion.

    Thoughts and prayers.

At an absolute minimum what has happened is Russia has attacked a Ukrainian target 10k inside Ukrainian border. Ukraine fired an anti-air missile to protect whatever Ukrainian hospital school or residence Russian has decided is a crucial military target today.

Either the antiair missile hit and deflected the Russian missile into Poland or it missed and went into Poland itself. Either way the responsibility is Russian.

To say Poland needs to defend itself from Ukraine is you yet again adopting a Joseph Goebbels approach to the truth in seeking to absolve Russia. It is VERY VERY simple Timmy no Russian missiles near Polish border = no dead Poles, Alternatively Russia rolls the dice by firing close to the border = Poles entitled to strike Russian targets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,052 ✭✭✭saabsaab

It may still be a Russian missile. I guess the Poles will find out the truth soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭paul71

There is no rush to judgement there. It is very simple very clear English.

Expressed condolences, and placed responsibility for the the deaths on Russia. They are facts, not judgements. No Russian missile attacks near Polish border = no Ukrainian defense missiles fired, therefore it is Russias fault , irrespective of whether the missile that hit Poland was a Russian missile or a Ukrainian defense response.

By the way did you register before the news of the deaths were announced, afterwards or when it became known to you?

Is that not reason enough to close the Russian embassy and eject all its staff from the State.

Polish president says its very likely blast is from a Ukrainian air defence, and that it was a tragic accident.

Even the heads of state of NATO members are saying its likely an accident from UA air defence, only here are there still people theorizing about russian missiles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭paul71

Once again Timmy. Logic for 5 year olds. WHY are Ukraine firing defensive missiles? Are they shooting at bats spreading avian flu?

No they are firing at missiles targeting civilians, therefore it is entirely RUSSIAS fault.

This is a real blow. There go our chances of them being conscripted on landing.
