services are a minefield in ireland, get as much advice as you can before taking a leap of faith, what do these services offer?

ah if theyve been mentioned on such a site, theyre probably worth investigating, no harm in contacting adhd ireland either, such organisations can be very helpful, be careful where you spend your money though, it truly is a minefield out there, very badly regulated sector, i have add myself, can be very frustrating

was only diagnosed in my 30's also, alongside autism and dyslexia, selecting the right career is truly a minefield, ive ended up in jobs that have done great harm to my mental well being.

maybe contact adhd ireland directly, ive found talking to such organisations can be far more helpful that checking out their sites, ive also found some stuff on youtube very helpful

Hi, many thanks to people who have written about their experiences, it really means a lot to hear these and realise I'm not alone in how I am and feel!

I'm only starting on this journey, while I've always 'known' I have depression, it's only recently that ADHD was suggested to me by a GP - and it makes so much sense now I'm learning about it.

However, I'm kind of stuck now on how to get seen by a psychiatrist. I do have a referral, but the choice of who is left up to me. Apparently there's only two psychiatrists, in Ireland, that specialise in adult ADHD, that are taking on new referrals for assessment - and with one of them the waitlist is currently until June 2024!

Any advice on this? I'm open to going abroad (UK or Europe?), If it means getting assessed sooner - but then I'm not sure if that assessment is 'valid' in Ireland and if I can then get medication here if that's required?

Not all of them require a referral. Try Jaime Martinez. I believe his waiting times are very short and I’ve heard positive reviews of the service.

I just checked with the secretary, and she said wait time is to august 2024 if referral sent in now. She did say "If there is a clinical indication then the patient could be added to the cancellation list. We cannot guarantee this - it depends on the clinical information in the referral letter"

It is unlikely most people would be seen in 12 weeks by Dr Murtagh

I guess just make sure to ask to go on the cancellation list!

If you live in CHO 1, 3 or 6, there is an ADHD team under the national clinical programme. Theoretically you can be referred through your GP, to your local adult mental health service, under which the adhd teams sit. I think people should do this in any case to demonstrate the need. In practice, these teams already have long waiting lists.

CHOs 4, 7 and 8 supposed to have teams by the end of the year.

I would encourage anyone who has the money to go privately, but also get referred publicly, so you can access psychology, OT etc down the line

This is exactly what I did. After wasting a couple of years trying to get somewhere with doctors in this country, I got an assessment done by a psychiatrist in the UK without a referral in 2020. Paid for the assessment on a Wednesday, filled out the paperwork, had a Zoom chat with the psychiatrist the next week, and had the diagnosis 2-3 weeks later. The diagnosis is 'valid' 😀 here, as you say, but since Brexit, a doctor in the UK won't prescribe medication for you so you'll need to find a psychiatrist in this country to prescribe for you. I used my local HSE adult mental health services in Cork to write the prescriptions at first, but they were constantly messing up the prescriptions - it seemed like every month I had to make a second visit to get something on the prescription corrected because pharmacies wouldn't accept it (missing names, missing phone numbers, prescription for two months rather than one month...it was always something). They also seemed to have very little interest in finding a suitable level of medication. Currently waiting for a referral to a private psychiatrist here so I can get back on the medication...

I emailed them as soon as I read your post and got an appointment less than a week later. Meeting the psychiatrist next week to confirm the diagnosis. I feel so lucky!

anyone know what the wait time for Dr. Murtagh is?

My GP just sent off a referral, and I reached out to that new clinic mentioned above, they're already looking at 4-6 month wait. Would prefer to go with the quicker one.

I have initial consultation at the new clinic in merrion gates tomorrow... I'm nervous. What should I expect?

I am struggling to get through to anybody on phone, or get response to any email queries.

I've been trying to contact Dr Murtagh, Jaime Martinez, and the new merrion one.

Is there any better way to make contact?
