services are a minefield in ireland, get as much advice as you can before taking a leap of faith, what do these services offer?

  • Registered Users Posts: 555 ✭✭✭dbas

I genuinely don't know. I've seen some mentioned on adhd ireland website, but I have no way of critiquing them. I dont have money to waste.

I've recently purchased a book called the drummer and the great mountain and I'm going to work through that for now.

Meds help sometimes, but efficacy wanes for me if I'm honest

ah if theyve been mentioned on such a site, theyre probably worth investigating, no harm in contacting adhd ireland either, such organisations can be very helpful, be careful where you spend your money though, it truly is a minefield out there, very badly regulated sector, i have add myself, can be very frustrating

  • Registered Users Posts: 555 ✭✭✭dbas

That's what I have. Diagnosed at 32. Can never settle into a job. Keep picking the wrong ones and getting bored.

I checked a few of the websites of people listed on the adhd ireland site, and I didn't really get a good feel of them. Too much detail about them and their journey, rather than what they can do for me (if that makes any sense)

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,817 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

was only diagnosed in my 30's also, alongside autism and dyslexia, selecting the right career is truly a minefield, ive ended up in jobs that have done great harm to my mental well being.

maybe contact adhd ireland directly, ive found talking to such organisations can be far more helpful that checking out their sites, ive also found some stuff on youtube very helpful

A lot of services/therapists/coaches will provide a free initial call (15-20 mins) to ascertain if you're the right person for them, and vice versa. I think all the coaches/therapists on Thriving Autistic provide this: https://www.thrivingautistic.org/npn/ While I don't think an ADHDer needs to have a coach/therapist who also has ADHD, I think its beneficial because MANY therapists say they are experts in ADHD and are not. This can be really damaging, as they are suggesting things that aren't going to work for you or you're not able to implement etc.

Hi, many thanks to people who have written about their experiences, it really means a lot to hear these and realise I'm not alone in how I am and feel!

I'm only starting on this journey, while I've always 'known' I have depression, it's only recently that ADHD was suggested to me by a GP - and it makes so much sense now I'm learning about it.

However, I'm kind of stuck now on how to get seen by a psychiatrist. I do have a referral, but the choice of who is left up to me. Apparently there's only two psychiatrists, in Ireland, that specialise in adult ADHD, that are taking on new referrals for assessment - and with one of them the waitlist is currently until June 2024!

Any advice on this? I'm open to going abroad (UK or Europe?), If it means getting assessed sooner - but then I'm not sure if that assessment is 'valid' in Ireland and if I can then get medication here if that's required?

    Thanks

My OH was assessed a few months ago. He was initially told the wait could be 12+ months, but asked to be put on a cancellation list and then got an appointment after about 3 months I think. Might be worth a try for you too.

Not all of them require a referral. Try Jaime Martinez. I believe his waiting times are very short and I’ve heard positive reviews of the service.

Dr. Alan Murtagh is taking on new clients although it says on the adhd Ireland site that he isn't. 12 weeks wait

I just checked with the secretary, and she said wait time is to august 2024 if referral sent in now. She did say "If there is a clinical indication then the patient could be added to the cancellation list. We cannot guarantee this - it depends on the clinical information in the referral letter"

It is unlikely most people would be seen in 12 weeks by Dr Murtagh

  • Registered Users Posts: 11 Jo Roek

That's odd, when I rang them about a month ago they said I could go straight on to cancellation list even before there was a referral sent in for me. As long as you can pay the fee at short notice they said

  • Registered Users Posts: 705 ✭✭✭Feu

I guess just make sure to ask to go on the cancellation list!

I've received a diagnosis for ASD, obviously private because I know it's not publicially funded but ADHD? can this be done publically?

  • Registered Users Posts: 705 ✭✭✭Feu

If you live in CHO 1, 3 or 6, there is an ADHD team under the national clinical programme. Theoretically you can be referred through your GP, to your local adult mental health service, under which the adhd teams sit. I think people should do this in any case to demonstrate the need. In practice, these teams already have long waiting lists.

CHOs 4, 7 and 8 supposed to have teams by the end of the year.

I would encourage anyone who has the money to go privately, but also get referred publicly, so you can access psychology, OT etc down the line

This is exactly what I did. After wasting a couple of years trying to get somewhere with doctors in this country, I got an assessment done by a psychiatrist in the UK without a referral in 2020. Paid for the assessment on a Wednesday, filled out the paperwork, had a Zoom chat with the psychiatrist the next week, and had the diagnosis 2-3 weeks later. The diagnosis is 'valid' 😀 here, as you say, but since Brexit, a doctor in the UK won't prescribe medication for you so you'll need to find a psychiatrist in this country to prescribe for you. I used my local HSE adult mental health services in Cork to write the prescriptions at first, but they were constantly messing up the prescriptions - it seemed like every month I had to make a second visit to get something on the prescription corrected because pharmacies wouldn't accept it (missing names, missing phone numbers, prescription for two months rather than one month...it was always something). They also seemed to have very little interest in finding a suitable level of medication. Currently waiting for a referral to a private psychiatrist here so I can get back on the medication...

I don't want to step on anyone's toes with a recommendation so if the mods confirm it's ok, I can post the link to the psychiatrists' website for anyone who's interested

A new clinic has just opened in Dublin in Ballsbridge, €900, which includes meetings with the GP for screenings, blood tests and ECG, meeting with psychiatrist, and 6 month meds follow up. Its literally just opened this week, there's no waiting list as far as i know!

  • Registered Users Posts: 533 ✭✭✭Ericaa

I'm just back from my initial appointment there and all I can say is thank you so much for posting this 😭

I emailed them as soon as I read your post and got an appointment less than a week later. Meeting the psychiatrist next week to confirm the diagnosis. I feel so lucky!

Delighted to hear it, best of luck with psychiatrist!

anyone know what the wait time for Dr. Murtagh is?

My GP just sent off a referral, and I reached out to that new clinic mentioned above, they're already looking at 4-6 month wait. Would prefer to go with the quicker one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,882 ✭✭✭tusk

Sorry, missed the above where someone said 2024. I reached out to the merrion clininc that just opened. and they've already got a 4-6 month waiting list.

Hi all my sister is having herself and her young son assessed for ADHD. She has suggested I should look into getting assessed too. Where do I start? With my own GP is it? I am already under the mental health team with another issue. I do have some funds for private assessment if needs be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 705 ✭✭✭Feu

Hi Cherry Blossom, information on how to get assessed here: https://www.susanmadigan.ie/assessment

You should attend GP to show need. If you re in CHO 1, 3 or 6 they do have HSE ADHD teams but waiting list already long. Practically, you should consider going private if possible

Dr murtagh wait list 2 years now. New ADHD clinic in Dublin ADHD Doc, wait list 4-6 months

I have initial consultation at the new clinic in merrion gates tomorrow... I'm nervous. What should I expect?

I recently got diagnosed by Dr Alan Murtagh as ADHD-PI with ASD traits. Coincidently, my partner was also recently diagnosed by Séamus Ó Ceallaigh as same. My experience for assessment was a bit awkward as was a Zoom type assessment. Felt frustrated communicating. He was very professional and thorough. I couldn't locate any school reports but did provide multiple academic scripts from failed/delayed attempts in university. He want's me to start on Tyvense. I'm due a blood pressure test with GP soon before starting meds. I was on waiting list for one year which is far from ideal but worth the wait in the end. My partner had an equally positive experience with Ó Ceallaigh.

    Any questions let me know.

I am struggling to get through to anybody on phone, or get response to any email queries.

I've been trying to contact Dr Murtagh, Jaime Martinez, and the new merrion one.

Is there any better way to make contact?

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Rewind

Think Dr Murtagh only accepts referrals through a GP. Have you discussed getting a referral with your GP?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,991 ✭✭✭DavyD_83

Thanks, GP was under impression she didn't need to refer me so hasn't, but I'm sure she'll give me one of I ask, and looking like that may be best bet

That martinez fellah is looking for 350 to see me.

I only want to try new meds. I have a diagnosis already from Dean clinic.

That's a disgraceful fee to be asking for in my opinion
