I really cant believe I've not heard of these before. Gonna have to set up a few alerts and try to get something cheap to give it a test over the winter!

@graememk I'd be handy enough with basic plumbing but no way I would do a tank install myself, have a good plumber who charges fair and its work that I see as needed anyway. Have you been heating with immersion for home heating and gas?

the heat stores I looked at had 3 coils, some with even more but they seem made money.

No gas up where I am 😆

Yep heating the house with a mixture of immersion and solid fuel. Putting in about 12kwh per night. Can heat the tank from the stove too. Sometimes I "preheat" the tank from the stove around this time of night.

DHW is covered by stove and solar tubes and immersion in the summer.

Using no oil this winter. (Tank empty!)

On the storage heaters is there anyway to control them better, most seem to have two dials input and output, and from that they seem to control how much to charge up, what time to charge up, what time to output, how much to output, whether they heat during day using element or just stored heat.

They really have very little control.

Would it possible to get one that just stored heat during specific hours (I've cheap ev rate from 2-5) and then output it when I want, don't turn on element outside charging hours unless I specify it.

From 2-5am I have 10c per unit which works out cheaper than oil per kWh be great to be able to utilize it a bit for heating but don't think traditional storage heater would work for that, maybe possible with a smart plug or something.

New ones have much more control, First data sheet pulled out of google,

the largest one has a heat output of 1200w, but charges at 2.6kw, looks like it takes 8 hrs to "charge" with a potential storage of 20kwh.

Can't find a price for the one you linked but did do a bit more looking since I posted and found some with similar features but looking at best part of €1k

At that price you'd be a long time getting your money back even just compared to a 50 quid small oil rad.

I wonder is there any way of using some smart switches with an old cheap one to better control it, probably more effort than its worth.
