    Tadhg!

Milne was bang average in the EI games I saw. He hadn't played much rugby in a long time and he was up against some decent props but he didn't get much change out of them.

I thought Milne struggled in the scrum, granted that with all this rugby it's hard to remember every game.

Would it not have been of more benefit to have got a slightly bigger squad and have Ireland A play South Africa A tomorrow night. Could have played it down in cork anyways.

It probably would have been more benefit for ireland alright. However if it was Ireland A then the game would have been played in Dublin.

And the game as it is better for munster. As they get a chance to embed their new systems, and give their youth a chance.

But Ireland A played New Zealand and maybe AF didnt want or see a need for a second A game when he could put out a much rotated side against Fiji.

The scrum was being minced, but Milne was a major reason we were getting the ball out fast, through channel one a lot of the times. His ability to destabilize the tight head for long enough was key

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,329 ✭✭✭TRC10

I think every prop struggled in the scrum on that tour.

Andy Farrell ready to mix and match for Fiji test – The Irish Times

Gerry says Henshaw is back and will partner McCloskey.

If his prediction of Healy starting is correct, that will provide the main moaning point.

I would rather see Loughman start rather than Healy.

Good to see Prendergast get a chance at this level. Henshaw/McCloskey could be a really exciting centre partnership to get a look at too. Most excited to see how Crowley goes when he gets introduced.

Is there anything you think he could show (in presumably 20/30 mins here) that would cause Farrell to elevate him to the bench against Australia?

Id also be up for a good moan if Healy starts. And if Stockdale starts. He looked slow when turning and lethargic yet again with his kicking in the A game. Way, way off his 2018.

JOB now deserves a go at left wing.

On the plus side it'll be good to see Crowley on the bench and Lowry been given another shot at FB. He needs a big game if he's to make WC squad.

Ah I think Stockdale deserves a go. He was shyte against NZA but if we cut everyone who was shyte that night, we won't be able to field a team. He's worth investing a bit of time I think.

A game against Fiji should be tailor made for someone like Lowry, lots of gaps to run through. Hopefully Fiji can give him a test in defence.

Is the game tonight being televised?

Maybe so...could be training that house down. 2019 is honestly the last time I can remember saying 'Stockdale had a good game'. Its not necessarily just the A game that discredits him. Small mercies if he's starts at 11 & that he's not going to be subjected to FB anymore.

It would be great for Ireland if Lowry does get a proper test on Sat. Kennan starting 23 of 24 is not good for Plan B.

My guess at Farrell's RWC Plan B options in the backs.

    RWC 2019 31-man squad: 17 Forwards 14 Backs / RWC 2023 33-man squad: 18 Forwards? 15 Backs?

    Luke McGrath  / 9.Gibson-Park

    20.Conor Murray

    21.Joey Carbery

    Jack Carty        / Crowley

    10.Johnny Sexton

    23?Bundee Aki

    Chris Farrell      / McCloskey

    12.Robbie Henshaw

    13.Garry Ringrose

    Andrew Conway / 14.Hansen

    Keith Earls         / Baloucoune

    Jacob Stockdale / 11.Lowe

    Rob Kearney      / 15.Keenan

    Jordan Larmour / Lowry

15th Back - Another SH? or Utility back like O’Brien or Larmour?...or winger like Conway or Stockdale?

Didn't expect JOB to start at 15, but I'm delighted for him. Has made huge strides in recent years and I hope he plays well.

I wonder if they're looking at him as utility backs cover? Might be a bad sign for Lowry if they are.

crowley on the bench !! nice

    timoney can count himself lucky.

    3 debutants....

Clearly playing poorly and being completely anonymous in the A game last week, didn’t stop Timoney getting picked. That with Deegan getting selected puts paid to any notions Coombes wasn’t dropped.

it’s good that Carberry is getting the start with JGP. Would have thought this was a good opportunity to start Casey all the same.

Prendergast covering second row is interesting.

Hadn't even picked up on that fact about Prendergast covering second row . It's already a relatively light weight lock pairing in Treadwell and Beirne.

if prendergast comes on for treadwell, we'll essentially have 5 back rows on the pitch. that would be interesting viewing

Perhaps Henderson not quite ready.. you'd have thought they'd give him 20 minutes off the bench if he was fully match fit.

    Delighted to see Loughman starting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,246 ✭✭✭Bogwoppit

I’d take the opposite view to that, none of the players came out with credit from the A match apart from maybe Osborne in my eyes.

The players still involved must be showing something in training that we don’t see, Coombes stood out in that he came off very badly in a few physical exchanges, his physicality is why he was put in there in the first place.

He most definitely has been dropped in my eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,105 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

You'd have to say that Lowry and Stockdale are joining Coombes in "big losers from Friday" bucket. To not even make the bench, when Ringrose could surely have used a week off, isn't a good omen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,329 ✭✭✭TRC10

Lot to like about that selection.

Giving O'Brien a start at 15 is smart. Keenan is world class, but we needed to see someone else. Jimmy showed last week that he's at this level and 15 is his best position. He's a very natural footballer, handy left boot, good footwork, decent speed and great hands. I think he'll really suit how we play. Huge blow for Lowry though.

I'm glad they've stuck with Baloucoune. I think he was very good last week. Hopefully he gets a bit more space this week.

    Carbery starting is logical.

I'm pleased to see Loughman get a start. We need another option at LH. A good game could see him move ahead of Healy.

Timoney played below himself for the 'A' team but he's an excellent player. Really excited to see what he can do in that backrow.

I'm happy they haven't made 15 changes. Because that often leads to really poor performances. They've kept a lot of 1st choice guys in there with a sprinkling of fringe players, which is definitely the way to go for these games.

Would have like to see Penny get a shot. He's a better player than Timoney who can count himself lucky.

Lowry unlucky and the better rugby player but its clear that JOB is seen as both versatile and somewhat like for like with Keenan.

all in all good mix there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I like that team. I think we could see a really good performance. Doris at 6 with Conan at 8. Very good dynamic backrow. Timoney will be fine! He's a damn good player and has some serious wheels. It's time for Zoolander to shyte or make way for someone else to shyte. Big outing needed for JC.

Congratulations to Loughman and Prendergast. Very much deserved. JOB with his versatility is looking like a bolter. Henderson must not be ready. I reckon He's in the xxiii for the Oz game. Another game for Baloucoune, who I thought was decent last week.

I hope we gel and put in a good performance. Some of these boys are legit candidates to go to France next year. I would say that Treadwell is also in a really good position. He's done well these last few months. its unfortunate that Ahern and Joe McCarthy are injured but, that's the breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,012 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Yep that doesn't look good for Lowry starting for Ireland this side of the WC. Or Stockdale, with Hansen swapping to 11. Larmour is also probably going to struggle to get another game with O'Brien's progression and Baloucoune getting the 14 jersey.

It'll be interesting to see when JOB is going to play FB again considering he's now going to be in the Ireland squads. JOB and Larmour will be vying for the last slot in the back three in Leinster at 14.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Looking at the wider fringes, I feel Haley is not seen as an option. He's a very good player and I think he could do a good job. What about Addison? Has he played his final match in green? Others like Shane Daly and Lowry are not seen as viable options. Lowry is just too small. Daly is adaptable and plays multiple positions. He's obviously behind JOB. Hume is still got a shout. But he needs injuries to help his cause. In the forwards it's hard to see anyone pushing ahead of the incumbents. Loose head is a weakness but, Loughman could be a good shout. 2nd row is set. There's nobody that will usurp the regular lads and Treadwell is locked in as the next up.

I would think that Doak is a possibility for the world cup. It's going to be JGP and 2 others. Murray likely being 1 and Casey, Blade or maybe Doak.

Yeah, when you consider that Lowe, Earls, Conway and Larmour are all out and will presumably be back for the 6N, it very well might be the case that players have already missed the boat for the RWC.
