I get the odd feeling like this as well tbh but I'm trying to stop myself and give them the time to sort these kind of things out. Freesync not working over HDMI on Linux was a big shock to me (I thought the 'Free' in the name meant it would be tailor made for open source tbh!), was thinking should I just stick Windows on it and treat like a PC even if I lost some optimisation in handheld. But nah, I'm happy hanging on.

I wanna see this succeed, so I'm gonna try and do my bit and not be as demanding as I might be with another company/product. It's a very tricky thing they're trying to do as well, the amount of use cases there are. Have to remind myself the odd time. We kind of want it to be as optimised as possible when in handheld and then stick it on a monitor/Tv and suddenly it transforms into a console etc. There's nothing like this as far as I can see, great stuff.

So yeah hopefully it works out, and often I'm just completely happy playing away on it. As long as they keep diligently improving it and there's an audience for it who knows...could all be gaming the same independent of whatever OS we're using. Brilliant.

Not Steam Deck specific, but if you are returning to PC gaming after a few years off. Then Epic do give away free games all the time, so it is worth signing up. You can use the Heroic Launcher to boot games from Epic on the Steam Deck.

Anyway, this week's free games are Fallout 3 and Evoland.

Does anyone know how to play Japanese N64 games through emudeck? Everything plays great but my 2 Japanese games just give me a black screen after launching. I tried them on another emulator on my laptop and they worked fine.

Haven't tried myself on the steam deck, but I remember having this issue before on something else and had to mess with the resolution/display settings. Might be something similar here

In case anyone is in the same situation. I updated emudeck to emudeck 2.0 and now Japanese N64 games are working.

    Mine arrived this morning 😻

Looking at getting an SD card for roms. Came across this recent guide. Any reason why I shouldn't go for this SD card? https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08T8LL7G8/pcgamesn0f-21

It doesn't look like top of the range but looks within the limits of the steam decks read/write rate.

GOG Galaxy has been added to Epic. If you log into Epic and add it to your library.

Then open Heroic launcher and install it as a non steam game.

Then you can boot gog galaxy from steam as it's own stand alone launcher.

Still messing about with it and installing Witcher 3 so will see if the game launch okay.

If the card is only going to be used for emulation then that size and price is overkill imo. It's also coming from the US? Or maybe that's where you're based. I went with the Samsung Pro Plus 512 from amazon.de, the Evo Select is great too.

Just ordered a second deck (christmas present for the eldest son), went with the 256GB model this time as I don't fancy swaping out the internal drive again. Will pair it with a 512 sd card and that should be good enough.

Most of my time with the deck lately has been playing Metroid Prime, dipping into Emulation Station and playing smaller Steam games. It's so convenient for shorter gaming sessions.

Picked up vampire survivors. My goodness it's like gaming crack. I can see why it's doing well on the Deck. Fits it perfectly.

That and Elden Ring are my two favourite games of the last while. It's amazing how little input VS requires from you and yet it's so much fun, brilliant game.

Going to try again and get some origin games working on the Deck, Heroic still the handiest way these days?

I think you need lutris for origin. Heroic seems to be just Epic and gog.

Which is a bit odd as EA games use origin to launch from steam and that works okay.

Cheers. Just seeing that now about Heroic alright, I forgot. Think I'll just the method using the origin installer itself.

Anyone manage to source a decently priced power bank that charges while you play, not being able to ship from Amazon is a disaster

I'm looking for one too. The one I already have for my phone hasn't got a high enough voltage so only does a slow charge and it is very slow!

My understanding is that as long as its 45W, it will work.

That one has 26800 mAh battery. The steam deck is 5,313-mAh. So in theory you could get 5 extra charges out of it.

I was looking at this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08ML1PHB2

That one looks good, how would you get it delivered here?

I'm based in the UK now. Does amazon not deliver to ireland anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭fitzer1982

No they won't even deliver it up North anymore

Amazon do of course deliver to Ireland in general, but I think there are still various electronics that aren’t shippable - including that battery pack. Perhaps something to do with the strict rules re batteries and postage over here?

Second Steam Deck just arrived - ordered it last Friday lunch time so 6 days in total to get here. That's pretty impressive! Another thing I love about the Deck is the case that comes with it, super handy it is.

Managed to get a few Origin/EA games running on it (Fallen Order and NFS: Heat), was fairly painless in the end. Also tried out Sonic Generations - looks gorgeous it does, decent game it seems too.

this looks very interesting if it was designed for a UK plug

fits in the back of the case in the groove

Just completed my second game on the Deck, Nier Automata(previous was Spiderman), great game, route B was a bit of a slog and there were about 2 absolutely infuriating bits that I dropped down to easy for and back to normal.

Now to pick another from the backlog :), I did preorder Spiderman Miles Moralas(however its spelt) with 3 credit on EGS, will have to see how that runs when it's released.

It's great for old games. I had my fill of Hades now going through Disco Elysium with a bit of Baba is You on the side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Markitron

MM is going to run practically identical to the first Spider-man game, from a tech standpoint they are essentially the same game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,553 ✭✭✭lmimmfn

Ahh yes, I'm aware of that, just not sure if there would be any differences using Epic version vs Steam, probably not but we'll see :)

As predicted it was a bit of a disaster, mainly that the controls weren't working at all. Took me ages to figure this out.

For any non steam games where the controller is not working:

    1. Make sure the game is added to steam via non steam games

    2. Load Big Picture mode in the desktop

    3. FInd your shortcut, go into controller options and Force Off steam input

    Tada!!!, fecking controls finally work.

I trawled for several hours for this fix, would be good if we had a Steam Deck forum so things like this could be stickied in a FAQ or whatever.

It's those utter bleeps, Anpost and their 100% ban on any Li-ion batteries. I honestly think the government should do something about this nonsense. Anpost end deliver most Amazon stuff, hence them not shipping here.

If you are really stuck, I'm travelling to Dublin at the start of December for a weekend... does that help you at all?
