Academic Journal Submissions

I'm currently working on a paper (in the PhilRel area) with the intention of submitting it to an academic journal. Would anyone here have any experience in that regard?

I would like hire an editor prior to submission, to ensure that the paper has the best possible chance of being accepted.

Would anyone have any recommendations other than searching on afepi (as that is an avenue I am already exploring).

Best bet would be to get a colleague knowledgeable in the area to review it. Journals have their own subeditors, and a freelance won't necessarily be able to judge the nuance of your argument (for example, an incorrectly applied 'split infinitive rule' could radically change the meaning of a sentence).

The editors and reviewers won't be focusing on the language/grammar, but on the argument you're making. Hence, a colleague is best placed to help.

Edit: obviously adhere to the journal's style guide on referencing and quoting, as well as abstract, etc.

Thanks Grolschevik. I don't work in academia myself, so I don't have any colleagues I could ask.

Would it be worth posting on a pre-print server and see if I can get feedback that way? I'm not sure how journals consider papers that have appeared in pre-print.

Worth visiting a university library in the philosophy of religion stacks. Pull a few off the shelves and see what has already been published by topic, content, style, and frequent sources cited.

You might also see if you can communicate with a lecturer or assistant professor at the philosophy department at university about your topic and publishing interests. You might get lucky and find someone who would be willing to coauthor the article with you. It’s publish or perish for them.
