Good honest discussion around the state of the city centre on the Brendan O'Connor panel just now. Worth a listen back.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Seriously? Read your post back and you will see how silly it is. Where else have you eaten "Chinese food" besides Ireland? What about far east Asia for example?

I had an authentic Chinese meal in London a few months ago, yes it had higher quality ingredients but it tasted nowhere near as nice as a good curry over here, the place didn't even serve chips which was disappointing. I hate to break it to you but we all have different taste buds

My post made perfect sense, it's your post that's silly. I've had real Chinese food in London and New York and it wasn't as nice

I suppose it's very easy to just say Dublin is a kip and be done with it but clearly there are positives to the place.

Why else would tourists flock there and so many choose to move there.

Personally i think the city lacks character and is not as safe as it should be.

And i don't believe my view is particularity skewed, we would all like Dublin to be a place to be proud of.

But we really are not doing ourselves any favors in ignoring :

    • Shabbiness and dirt, big litter issue in the city.
    • Large numbers of persons who are constantly doing minor disorder - spitting/shouting and roaring abusive language/arguing on streets/littering/drug use.
    • Lack of police presence - Well that might explain all the above...
    • Lack of greenery.
    • Urban sprawl.. Increased density would be far easier to provide services to.
    • Terrible public transit - Especially so at night.

Is it that i am just a softy and not in touch with the realities of the urban experience - No, Its actually not, however clearly my expectations based on living and travelling elsewhere in Europe do not match what Dublin is providing.

The solutions to all of these issues are not easy to fix and are a complicated mix of social issues, planning, cultural and policing to name but a few.

And it really is not a Dublin issue.. It is an Irish issue. Take any large urban area and im sure the same issues are present there albeit in a smaller scale.

I don't think that's acceptable and i don't think we should be excusing where we are at, there should be a focus in changing this landscape.

    Solutions are there.

Yeah ok. I get it. That's fine. Off topic anyway.

The Chinese food on Capel St and Parnell isnt. The restaurants are full of Chinese people.

My Korean friends reckon Dublin has the best KR food in Europe.

I know this is a joke, but apparently they eat dog to prepare for a tough time: university exams and such. It’s a rare thing to eat, but they’ve all eaten it. N=5 for this study.

If you haven’t found good Asian food in Dublin, you haven’t looked very hard. There is a huge 2nd wave of Chinese restaurants that cater to the Chinese community on Parnell/Capel street.

Yeah I looked. And I havent really found them apart from a few. I have high standards and a few decades of eating the real thing I guess. You ask any ethnic Chinese people here, they will point you to a couple of decent places their friends run but it's a real struggle out there. To be fair most Chinese people who came here are not very good cooks and the scale and size of the restaurants limits what they can do. Needs a lot of investment, should use professional ethnic Chinese chefs and it's risky offering authentic regional Chinese food .

And folks pointing to one or two streets in the city centre with a few resturants and then saying we have great Chinese food in a big capital city..... kind of makes the point for me doesn't it . Not even one person pointed out a great Dim Sum or Hot Pot or Steamed dumpling or Hakka or Rechao place yet. I'm disappointed. 😆

The only fix I found for this is what many well off for generations Dubliners know already . Choose to move to certain well off neighbourhoods village or just move outside to a town.

I find many towns in the 'countryside' to be more convenient and much nicer to enjoy than typical sprawled out Dublin suburbs where you need a car to get around . The suburbs often lack convenient shops and restaurants, with block after block of houses built with no village centre or poafr to open a shop or cafe. Piss poor planning for local living. Only the old 'villages' in Dublin have a semblance of easy living , Rathmines , Ranelagh, Raheny, Malahide, Dundrum etc

It’s a pretty good selection for the size of the Chinese community, in fairness. I’m not sure what you want.

Real authentic Chinese food, diversity, fun bigger places, cheap eats at actually cheap prices. Just the usual.

One of the biggest problems with Dublin is the lack of cheaper food outlets that aren't junk food , or real street food type eats. Paying 10 to 20 Euro is way too much. This is driven by the crazy high rents , taxes and energy costs here and strict planning laws that limit food vendors, but it does impact badly on the enjoyment factor of eating out. As I said it's shocking to be asked to pay up to 17 Euro for a noodle meal on which you know should go for 5 or 6 Euro. Actually even the food vans charge really high prices like 10 Euro plus. You would think they would be cheaper but...nope..this is Ireland. The place has gone nuts.

    That is just not enjoyable.

I'm sure there's a few decent places in the city centre, and a giant desert across most of the city. Same goes for Vietnamese and Korean too.

I'm not going to give way on this point, but feel free to go back to the core of the thread.

I really want to know what European city you’re getting a 5 or 6 euro noodle meal. You can’t compare Dublin to cities in Asia and complain it doesn’t measure up for variety or prices.

There’s a huge variety of food in Dublin. But no, it isn’t cheap. That’s my main criticism of Dublin. It’s poxy expensive.

Huge variety of food? Even European cuisines aren't too well represented across the city I reckon. Remember it's a big city not just a small city centre area..

Anyway , we agree on the expensive bit, inflation and covid has done a bit of a number on the enjoyment of eating out.

What are the quality of toasties like in China, Vietnam or Korea.

    This is the important question!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 23,069 Mod ✭✭✭✭Brian?

In Vietnam they’re better than Ireland. They used to be French Indochina, so they have savage bread. I had some unreal sangwiches in Vietnam.

Huge variety. The only “Irish” restaurants in the city centre are tourist traps. There are more other restaurants than Irish across the city. There are everything from Romanian to Filipino

I see a Garda U-turn on the new station on O'Connell St. Good idea.

    Do not contradict me!

Were they fully enclosed toasties or just poxy toasted sangiches?

    Consider your answer carefully.
