Looks like 800 fit enough recruits cannot be found, so the Minister's plans are in disarray - by a long shot. What could possibly be the cause of this lack of physical fitness? Less time in the SUVs and more time on the bike and the pavement needed too, maybe?

Just looked up the fitness test for the gards. 25 press ups and 35 sit ups with no time limit and level 8.8 on the beep test, what an absolute joke.

Sit ups and press-ups, even a reasonably unfit person would get close to achieving that. anyone looking after themselves would do it in a doddle.

Think the run is a tight one…I keyed in a landmark that I thought was roughly that distance away… amazingly it is exactly 2.4 kilometres away… even when my fitness is back A1….I would not do it in 11.40 on a good day…

There's nothing wrong with having a wellbeing app. It's quite normal nowadays. Many employers have health and wellbeing programmes with apps. I know my previous employer provided us with a wellbeing app through Spectrum Healthcare.

I'm going to call shennanigans on those figures of 11,000 applied to join the Gardai this year and they could only get 500 to pass the test. That doesn't sound credible. It's more likely that they don't have the capacity to train 800 new Gardai this year. Actually a quick look at Wikipedia says that Templemore can accommodate 520 people. I'd say that's closer to the reason why they have 500 new Gardai this year and not the 800 promised.

Going to the gym should be a mandatory requirement as part of being a Guard. No if, buts and maybes.

Too many tubby fuckers around comfortable now that they have got in. Many of them couldn't even jog 200 yards and don't command respect.

That entry level fitness test is absolutely laughable.

You'd be better off going for a cycle or playing a game of GAA or any of the millions of other thing ppl do to keep fit rather than be required to go to a gym and do a public service made up program of some description.

Most guards would welcome the opportunity to go to the gym if it was built into their tour of duty. Chances are it's the only break they will get during their 12 hour shift.

That machine was broken by the first group so subsequent groups haven't had to use it. So no excuse there
