yeah Im not counting on it but 16/1 was too hard to resist as those odds are now way out of kilter given this evenings events where she basically launched step one of her leadership bid by resigning as Home Secretary . I think Truss is toast this week and it will be between Braverman, Mordant and Sunak and Sunak has been missing in action lately. The Tory party is just that nuts at the moment that she could actually pull this coup off

The delusion from him that he thinks the Tories have a chance of recovering from this.

It’s either she stays and they continue to tank, or she goes and the Tories elect a third PM, trying to gaslight the public that they have the mandate to do this.

Either keep her or sack her and call an election. They’re f*cked either way.

I don't quite follow the logic to be honest. As in I don't think the events of today have improved her chances.

But more importantly 16/1 is bad advice as there is plenty of 33s and 50s available so grab that instead.

I'm thinking if the party tried to impose a 'unity candidate' she would the 'heavy hitter' to buck that and force a contest. And once party membership is making the final choice, common sense tends to go out the window as we have seen...

Yes, I saw speculation this evening that one of the main reasons Braverman resigned is that she has her eyes on the top job (the whole email leak thing was concocted....as if anyone in this chaotic Tory government would resign over so trivial a matter). She's clearly on manoeuvres.

    This too shall pass.

Theres no one really there at 33/1 or 50/1 who has any chance of being next Tory leader, its full of people like Rees Mogg, Javid, Schapps, Kwarteng(!) and Raab. None of them have a hope imo and wont even run. Bravermans actions today shows that she is definitely in the game for it and she could be the ERG candidate who will want a Brexiteer installed as PM. Not saying she will win it but she is in the mix and anything could happen with that lunatic party, see Truss for example

yeah she would need to force a Tory membership vote to stand a good chance. If she can force that rather than a coronation then her dog whistling on Rwanda flights and attacks on Indian immigrants will stand her in good stead with the Tory membership. She gave an interview to the Times 5 days ago positioning herself as the next leader so she is definitely in the game

In fairness, when Truss goes it could be Hazel Chu's big opportunity to finally land a gig.

The Cons. need to show some signs of stability for 2 years heading to the next G.E. If they find themselves in opposition for a term ,that is when Braverman will have her chance, i.m.o. If Truss is replaced in the next few weeks/months , it won't be Braverman who gets the job. Braverman definitely seems to have an eye on the future though!

Yep. It's such a poisoned chalice now that only those who have no long term political ambition other than getting their name in the increasingly long list of UK prime minister's would seriously campaign for that job

I thought denigrating a politicians appearance/Intelligence was a huge no no. Is it just a matter of what side they are on now ? Seen it in many threads on boards those that do it to the wrong section are normally sanctioned. 🤔

That " Wet Lettuce" stuff was about shelf-life , not appearance/Intelligence. It stems from a headline in the last week about which would last longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,979 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

Its' not a comment on her appearance or intelligence, but on her record. The meme originated in an article in the 15 October edition of the Economist (which actually hit the streets a couple of days earlier) observing that . . .

"Ms Truss entered Downing Street on September 6th. She blew up her own government with a package of unfunded tax cuts and energy-price guarantees on September 23rd. Take away the ten days of mourning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and she had seven days in control. That is roughly the shelf-life of a lettuce."

Others have picked up on this rather vivid image, notably The Star, which since 14 October has been running a live YouTube feed of a head of lettuce to see whether the Truss premiership can outlast it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm-RE95lKJ0.

There is a precedent for the Tories winning an election, then replacing the election-winning PM with a new PM, and then replacing that PM with a second new PM, all without another election. That's how Winston Churchill came to power.

I agree that doing this again in the current circumstances will infuriate voters, but there's no great cost there because voters are already infuriated. The only thing that might assuage their fury is at least moderately competent leadership, and as Truss doesn't now seem to have the authority to provide any kind of leadership at all, the only hope of moderately competent leadership is a new leader.

The only thing keeping Truss in office is the lack of a unity candidate to replace her. The challenge there is not finding the candidate; it's finding the unity. The party factions are fighting like cats in a bag, and the loony right faction in particular, having finally got a True Believer into the top job, will be very reluctant to let the prize slip away to anyone sane.

Fair enough glad to be wrong life lessons and all that. Sometimes I'm to black and white. The old Asperger's kicks in sometimes.

Watching her run and hide, not really answer questions, it’s like seeing a student teacher take over a nightmare class. Their soul slowly leaves the body as the day(s) goes on.

Steve Baker has been out doing interviews claiming No. 10 told him Suella will be reappointed Home Sec in the new year......

Gonna be another day with sky news on in the background

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,979 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

I've read reports that Baker says that he hopes (rather than "has been told") that Braverman will be brought back into Cabinet (but not mentioning any specific position). But this is a fast-moving business, so I am not saying you are wrong.

If Baker really has said that No. 10 has told him the Braverman will be reappointed as Home Secretary, that means No. 10 has effectively told him that Shapps is going to be fired. Saying this would, I think, lead to Baker himself being fired and No. 10 denying his claims; if that didn't happen then it's hard to see Shapps not resigning; how could he stay in office if No. 10 won't deny briefing that he is to be fired?

The whole thing is a complete sh!t-show. At this point I'd give even money on Truss going within 24 hours, and her successor seeking an early election. It's an election that the Tories will inevitably lose, and lose badly, but at this point that really looks like the least worst option for the party.

I meant that you could get 33s or 50s on Braverman herself, i wasn't talking about other candidates. So don't take a mere 16/1 if you think she is a likely winner. Braverman 33/1 with Betfred for example. (Though as said I don't see her path to a win)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,212 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Found the interview and while it's not exactly what I posted it's pretty close.

To me reappoint means back to home sec, if they meant another job they would have just said appoint to another Job and not reappoint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,979 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

I see where you're coming from. But I think in the context "reappoint" must mean "reappoint to Cabinet". No way is No. 10 going on the record that the PM would like to fire Shapps in a couple of months.

Is Suella Braverman going to make a speech today ? I know that if you resign you can. Given who it is it could be memorable for good and bad reasons. I can see it being a parliamentary pity party.

Seen the pictures of the carry on of the Tories last night before going into to vote on Fracking. I will hold my hands up and say I did have a chuckle. Rees- Mogg in the middle of it.

It's up to the Speaker to permit, or refuse permission for, a member to make a personal statement. By tradition, a minister who resigns will be permitted to make a personal statement about the circumstances of the resignation if they wish to. The statement is not debated, and it should be heard in silence without interruption. The government may be permitted to make its own statement in response, but this is relatively unusual.

I do not know whether Braverman intends to make a personal statement about her resignation. If she does, it doesn't have to be today; to a large extent she can choose her own timing. When Geoffrey Howe resigned from Thatcher's government in November 1990, he waited nearly a fortnight before making a powerful personal statement which is widely seen as the tipping point triggered the events leading to Thatcher's own resignation ten days later. Braverman doesn't have the standing or credibility of Geoffrey Howe, of course but, then, Truss is no Margaret Thatcher either.
