Any value in feeding bullocks nuts for mart?

20 bullocks , 19 to 22 months going to mart in late November. Still plenty of grass. All outdoors.

Any point in giving nuts and in what quantity?

LMX, AAX. I'd guess 400 to 500kg, mostly 450. But I've no scales some I'm completely guessing

Would you not consider keeping them to factory, particularly the AAX? You’ll have them fit to kill by end of January or early February and they won’t need much more than 200kgs of meal.

Does straw or hay help?

I'll keep them as long as I can outdoors, weather dependent of course.

Would expect hay would do more for them than straw - higher digestibility. I have 4 Ho;steins to finish - currently on grass with 4 kgs beef mix. Will introduce hay shortly. Will be slow I expect. With prices slipping it will be dubious. Would like to get to O= for the 20c. 2 at best I'd say! Big for 26 months.

Problem with feeding nuts now is they will wait around troughs all day, if you have plenty grass i wouldn't bother with feeding. I don't think you'll see value in it either in cattle being sold in 4 - 6 weeks.

That is a good question. I had to wait till now for payments but I could sell now. I had mid November in my head.

I was talking to a dealer during the week and he said there's a glut now, wait as long as you can while you have grass.

Would u try let off 2 of them at mart now c how u get on, can always bring home of u not happy, if the cattle good few weeks won't make much difference, I've been watching weanlings and the good animal is still selling well

Very interesting comment about the hay/straw. I'm in same boat as original poster, feeding 1kg rolled barley + 1 kg nut to stock outdoors. Sell before Christmas or early Jan at the latest. Very good response last year from concentrates but weather has been very wet this month and grass running through them. Might add hay to improve roughage intake.

Obviously weather has turned for the worse. Time to get rid I think. I'l ask if there is a high fibre feed for them or maybe ask neighbour for hay, I sold hay earlier in the year. I'll not use troughs, I'll spread on the grass, different locations each day.

Next year I'll keep some hay for myself.
