    From allblacks.com

Confirmation of the tour comes more than two years after the All Blacks XV was launched as NZR’s next senior national representative team after the All Blacks

So I am assuming that it ties to New Zealand for eligibility

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

    Okay.

I assume this is the twitter thread I read about: https://twitter.com/nathanrjohns/status/1579771737985945602

Are they trying to sneakily 'capture' some Samoa-eligible players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭Mr Tickle

I'm pretty sure James Lowe played for the Maori AB's so it probably can't be their 2nd squad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

Ffs, how could a team not every NZ-eligible player is eligible for possibly be their second team?

Jimmy O'brien might have something to say about that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,316 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

"I wish I was as good as Mike Lowry", something like that?

Think Jimmy's a very good player, but definitely think Lowry is better. O'Brien's comfort on the wing is the advantage he has.

Strongly disagree, JOB the way higher ceiling imo

I dunno about that. If we were playing in the morning, I'm pretty certain it'd be Lowry would be selected ahead of him.

I mentioned this before, but I think it's the opposite. O'Brien arguably has the higher floor as he's the better defender and a little more sure under the high ball, but I think Lowry has the higher ceiling in attack. Lowry in attack might be better than Hugo Keenan even.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭LRind2008

Maybe as of right now, not sure that will remain to be the case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,316 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

We'll have to agree to disagree. Lowry's been playing at a a level for two years that O'Brien rarely reaches, imho.

    I understand you feel different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,939 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

What areas in particular do you think JOB could turn out to be so far ahead in, that makes you think he has a way higher ceiling, out of interest?

Fwiw, Lowry's actually younger than JOB, so that doesn't make much sense to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭LRind2008

I think JOB fits easier into the keenan mould of FB that Lowry does and that will aid him, solid under the high ball, good defence and good in attack.

Lowry can be exeptional in certain elements of kicking and attack but at international level the solidity JOB could provide will probably be favoured longer term but thats on Farrell to decide.

i cant recall the time distributions both got for Ireland vs the Maoris did both pick up injuries in Maori games or am I dreaming

As much as I like Jimmy as a player. Lowry is definitely the next cab after Keenan. He provides us a broken field threat to an extent that no one else does as well. He also fills that playmaker role. I think some people look at Lowry and just see his size. He’s excellent both in attack and defence. JOB’s ability to cover the wing might make him a better bench option though.

I like Lowry. He is fantastic in open field. JOB is very solid. But, I would pick Lowry.

Let's see how Lowry fairs against the Lions, Sharks and then Munster..

The Sharks look a serious outfit with the Springboks returning.

Id imagine that ulster v Sharks game next week could be a serious test if both teams go with best 15's available.

    To Quote MK:

"Eben Etzebeth starts for the Sharks tomorrow against Glasgow in the URC.

Jaden Hendrikse comes in at scrum-half.

Vincent Tshituka also into the starting XV.

Siya Kolisi, Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, and Makazole Mapimpi onto the bench."

I think JOB could be a useful squad player for Ireland, pick up a few caps here and there but wouldn't see much more tbh.

Lowry is a great talent but someone of his size is always going to be a concern until we've seen him defend against top tier sides.

It's three weeks until the SA game and as of now, Keenan, Earls, Conway, Larmour, Stockdale and Lowe all have injuries of varying severity so chances are both JOB and Lowry will see game time in November.

Well we can make a judgement of Lowry's size when he gets a chance. He's had one cap and scored two tries and set up another. Yeah it was against 13 Italians but so far he has handled what has been put in front of him

I rate Lowry highly. In terms of broken field running He's one of the most talented Irish backs I've ever seen. He's just unfortunate that Hugo Keenan is playing as well as any 15 in world rugby. His performances against New Zealand were spectacular. If he's fit he's one of the first names on the team sheet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,470 ✭✭✭✭bilston

No doubt about it. Keenan has been a revelation. I didn't think he could reach the levels he has, and he's still young enough that he can get even better.

That said, the fact he is injured at the moment is exactly why someone like Lowry or O'Brien or whoever needs to get proper minutes in November.

Man of the Match in Ulster's BP win away against the Lions.

I mean, he's been superb against all manner of teams over the last couple of years, but if these games are particularly important to you, he's started well.

just tryin to stop Oli Jager to move back to Ireland!

    PS : hope not BTW

PS 2 he's in the squad listed for November, will happen :(

Could be looking at quite a new look backline in a few weeks. Gibson-Park, Stockdale, Lowe, Conway, Earls, Larmour and Keenan are all currently injured and have played little to no rugby this season, and Aki is suspended.

With the players available currently, my money would be on a back 3 of Hansen/Baloucoune/Lowry.

Centres will probably be Henshaw and Ringrose. But I think McCloskey will see minutes v Fiji.

9 will be very interesting if JGP is out. Murray IMO shouldn't be in the extended squad. Munster's attack ticks far better with Casey and I think we're seeing a changing of the guard there this season. I'd like to see Cooney given another opportunity. I know there were personality clashes the last time he was in Ireland camp, but nearly 2 years have passed, and I think he's easily still the 2nd best 9 in Ireland (if not the best). And I just think with the RWC less than a year away, we should be leaving no stone unturned, and a player of Cooney's quality can't be just frozen out forever. If we're to get past the last 8 we'll need all the quality we can get. I think he should get another chance at the very least.

It's a shame there's no European rugby before the AIs. This sort of comment was made last season as well but Murray started every single big game that Munster had, Casey got 0 starts in Europe last season.

I'd say you or I have a similar shot to Cooney getting another go.

But that was under a different coaching ticket. At some point Casey is going to replace Murray as first choice. I think there’s a good chance (and would like it to be) this season.

Casey started last night in a must win game with Murray on the bench. When Murray came on, despite a moment or two of genius, our distribution got significantly worse

Casey got a bit of a battering, but if he's fit he will likely start next week against Leinster cementing his position as 1st choice 9 at Munster

    Ban billionaires

Reading a really weird interview with Sammy Arnold in the Indo here, he seems very annoyed about his exit from Irish rugby. The TL;DR is:

    • Was playing for Munster, picked up an Irish cap, things seemed to be going fine
    • Munster signing DDA was announced
    • Arnold is offered a 3 year contract with Munster, seeks and is given assurances about his minutes given DDA coming in
    • Refuses to sign contract, Munster tell him if he doesn't sign it it will be withdrawn (presumably to finalise their squad), still refuses to sign it, contract is withdrawn
    • Ends up at Connacht, then ends up in France

He seems to be very annoyed at the fact he asked for more time to consider the contract but it wasn't given. I dunno though, it's pro sport, he had a good contract offer, he talks about all he'd given to Munster but he could have signed on again and he'd still be there now, given DDA has left again he'd have every chance of getting real minutes. He talks about his time in Ulster as well and apparently turned down the Quins academy, he just seems very impatient. Given the centres ahead of him for Ireland I don't think he'd ever have been first choice or anything but could have picked up more caps.
