I'm sure I could get a discounted box of them in the pound shop 😆

I have 100 euro after the weekend and having to pay the bill on my card and some people giving me cash instead of revoluting it like a civilized humanbeing 😁. Hate having cash, end up with change that just sits there

About £60 left over from a trip to London, nothing else. I have very little need for cash these days.

I was burgled 5 years ago and the thieves found old travellers cheques that were in a box in a "junk room" (ya know, the spare room where everything gets stored till it's sorted!). They were in an envelope at the bottom of an anonymous box, I'd even forgotten about them.

From the alarm records, they were in my house for 30 mins, ransacked every room and found any money I had in the place (even the coin jar), plus my few bits of jewellery.

Don't assume anywhere in a house is safe (no pun intended) where money is concerned.

Something around €800 in the house and €100 in my wallet. I use card mostly but there are times when cash is needed.

I must have missed the other thread. Why do people have cash in their house?

I've a jar of coins but that's about it. I've free banking and even my drug dealer takes revolut.

The things is they are going to do that to the property anyway. Good luck to them finding where I put money in my house because they will need to use magnets it isn't in a box just lying in some room.

With 30 c , your box would definitely be discounted .

    I'll get my coat.

Usually nothing, although I do have around €1400 or €1500 belonging to the kids in an old wallet. Any presents they got over the years that was over €50, I put in there so that they didn't spend it on crap. Keep meaning to open an account for them somewhere, must do that.

If I broke into my own house, knowing all that I know - I'd be lucky to come away with a tenner! Just me and the wife (no kids) so no reason to have cash in the house. Not that I can think of, anyway...

All bills, etc... are electronic. Anything bought is on the card(s) and cash is only really needed if I'm paying someone to do a job... but being the DIY guru that I am - I mostly tackle all that stuff myself. I'm doing a deal with a lad today in cash (large-ish amount) - so I'll just grab it on the way.

I take it all you guys who have no cash in the house also have very little money apart from whats in a current account. I stopped putting money in a bank deposit account years ago. There is zero interest to be got + it's open to scrutiny at any time.

Why would you need to break into your own house? Is there a barring order or something?

I keep a €50 note under the clock on the living room mantlepiece.

It was something my mother used to do, if any of us (kids) were ever in an emergency and needed to get a taxi home, we knew there would be some money under the clock to pay the fare.

I guess I just carried it on. Other than that, just whats in my purse. I don't keep cash at home.

I think i havent had much more than €30 in the house for years.

If I had 250k under a mattress from someone who spiked my drink and wanted to get away with it I would not be divulging it here cause you could be in for a nasty surprise.

I think in that scenario, you've already had the nasty surprise. But were probably asleep for it.

I have a jar that is used for collecting coinage up to and including €1. When jar is full it usually amounts to about €160. Bagged and brought to Post Office. The jar takes about 8 weeks to fill. Not much of a card user, probably reflecting my age.

I have a couple of thousand, I don't hide it and in fact would prefer a burglar found it and then fcuked off satisfied with his work rather than trashing the house.

I agree with the post in this thread that nobody with any serious amount of cash in the house would/should post about it here. A lot of us have given away enough info on this site to make ourselves identifiable. Never tell anyone, online or offline if you have cash. Other people are idiots and they blab.

If I was a burglar I would target the homes of tradesmen as most will be doing cash jobs and evading tax, where are they keeping this money - most likely, in the house.

I really don't see the point of having €9k emergency cash in the house when literally everything can be paid by card for the things you describe.

Large quantities of cash in a house is just not safe due to risk of theft, fire, flooding etc ( It does happen) and what is the advantage I just can't think of any.

Been virtually cashless since the arrival of Apple pay and won't be going back the speed, security and convenience of paying by phone/card just far outweighs any benefits of cash.

    This.

Got around €60 lying around the kitchen. In plain view.

May not prevent them doing damage, but could distract them from dreaming up any poo related vengence.

I like to think theres a sort of gentlemans agreement, a bit like leaving santa a pint but in reverse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,070 ✭✭✭realdanbreen

I wouldn't dream of leaving 60c never mind €60 in plain view. And the same goes for phones etc. Those fokkers would smash the window for 20c!.

I love coins, I purposely target a total that makes sure I get coins back

Nothing, except for around €50 in the wallet which I take with me when I leave the house.

I used to go through a toll bridge every morning, that was great for getting rid of them.

I remember years ago, there was a thread on the Motors forum, where someone recommended that people shouldn't hide their car key away, but leave them out in plain view, otherwise a thief breaking into the house to steal the car would wake you up with a boiling kettle in hand, demanding the keys from you.

One wag replied "I just hide my kettle."

Years back a "security conscious" neighbor locked all the internal doors in the house before going out. Thieves broke in and did more damage breaking the doors down the 6 doors than they took. Of course the locked door must be locked for a reason like there is something valuable on the other side.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Probably a habit. If I knew my neighbours were away and I all of a sudden hear doors being broken down or kicked in I’d call the Gardai without hesitation..

Small jar of coins.. maybe a few notes about the place if we really dug around.. but generally almost none. Not by choice, just the modern and covid transitions to almost entirely electronic methods of payment.

    €500 for emergencies.

Used to be more but Ulster Bank showed me the door and then AIB gave me a lovely shiny new card and I haven't looked back since.
