This is a very strong message to send out to illegal traffickers and migrants that if you're caught entering illegally then you'll never get in, ever.

This is against international law. You cannot have a blanket ban on asylum seekers requesting asylum in any way shape or form as per the refugee convention.

They are attempting to circumvent this by making everyone claim asylum in person, but making it illegal to enter the country and criminalising those who do, preventing them from claiming asylum. The only way would be to get a visa, enter the country, then claim asylum. This is impossible for pretty much all refugees.

There's not a hope this will stand up to any legal scrutiny. They may not be alone in trying this, but it's completely against international law.

Racist dog-whistling to whip the Tory supporters into a frenzy and improve her stock amongst the knuckle-draggers that hate her because she's brown and was born to immigrant parents.

Heres a good explainer, its a bit more complex than what I posted https://www.goodenergy.co.uk/why-does-the-price-of-gas-drive-electricity-prices-including-renewables/

The EU are planning on decoupling which should bring electricity down

Is there some sort of connection between children of immigrants punching down to asylum seekers ? Or is it just a coincidence with the last 2 ?

Or is power all that matters and they are appealing to their base no matter how evil it makes them sound ?

Meaningless virtue signalling to please the Stephen Yaxley-Lennon brigade in the UK. Patel wasn't famous for being an open borders liberal. Braverman is just a stupider version.

On the one hand, the professional "I am offended" types will react with the usual outrage but on the other hand the Torys have done very little beyond spouting such rhetoric against illegal immigration for fear of being cast as x-Ist. Douglas Murray's "Strange Death of Europe" covered this feature of talk but no action on the politicians part for fear of such reactions.

Indeed. This line says it all:

Setting out her intention to ensure UK immigration policy is not “derailed” by modern slavery laws, the Human Rights Act or the European court,

A woman of Indian ancestry, whose parents immigrated to Britain from Africa, trying to circumvent international slavery laws.

The Tories just keep knocking it out of the park.

but you would say that such is your desire to let anybody rock up and claim a right to stay.

immigration should be handled by process not just masses arriving .

The resources of a country should be for the citizens not anybody who just lands here - its' not like our state services are in tip top condition but we splurge money on people 5 minutes in the country over the taxpayer who actually funds the state.

How dare countries protect national interests.

They should try "take back control" like Britain did.

Yeah it's such a bizarre line of thought. If you're an immigrant you must allow your nation to be flooded with other immigrants, even if it's to the point of destructiveness, otherwise you're a hypocrite. At least they are consistent for a change, because Paddy too must allow everyone in, because his ancestors may have went to another country to work at some stage in the past.

If the people who made these points simply cared about rights and due process, I wouldn't mind, but we all know that even if they got their due process and were rejected for their asylum claims, then they'd be outraged about the injustice of it all even though there is none. While they'll claim that there's "no such thing as open borders" it's clear that a system that it all but that is the only thing that will satisfy them.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

And not alone was O'Gorman advertising all the free goodies awaiting any chancer who arrives to these shores, those 'various' languages include Albanian and Georgian, two countries from which we receive some of our highest numbers of fraudulent asylum applications.

It was Donald Trump who said that you cannot have a country if you cannot control your borders.

Just like our homes, we cannot have people coming in and out unchecked. If it applies to the home, it applies to the country; the principle is the same.

Suella Braverman will receive a torrent of abuse, and will no doubt be fashioned as some kind of xenophobic far-right, fascistic racist blah blah blah - the usual boring smears from the far-left.

But what she is doing is right.

And if that means a direct conflict with international law, then it's the latter that needs to change, not the former.

They aren't coming in unchecked. What Bravermann wants to do it deport them without any review, any discussion, simply on the basis that they aren't British and so are criminals. But rather than send them back to their won country, they are looking to deport them to a completely different country.

Give them avenues to apply. Review that application. Those that should get granted leave to stay should stay, those that don't are sent back.

But the likes of Bravermann want to get rid of laws because those laws mean that many of those seeking asylum actually qualify. That is the real problem. Many of them have legitimate claims and the UK don't want to abide by the international rules so they claim that all of them are illegals without even looking at the case.

What particular aspects of international law of the UK identified as being unworkable in relation to immigrants?

Quoting Donald Trump hoping that it helps the argument you are making is a bold move to say the least.

There are lots of things that need to be better about the asylum process in every country. It needs to be faster and more efficient and with a definitive result without appeals going on interminably among other things.

However, criminalising all asylum seekers by default isn't one of those necessary improvements.

That is nothing more than casual populist cruelty to fire up the "base".

Braverman is adhering to the just principle that nobody has a right to enter your country illegally.

A stern message must be sent that entering the UK through this route will lead to certain failure.

That way, legitimate migrants can opt for legitimate routes - and through applying with documentation to prove their status.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

personally I think the deportation of immigrants would help a lot of the UK's problems.

    Well, two immigrants anyway.

The Home Secretary and her predecessor should be enough.

The impression I got was that she had some form of coaching but they just gave up at one point. Michael Spicer might have stepped into documentary territory there for a bit.

There are no legitimate routes. The UK have deemed that all immigrants should stay in France. But Braverman isn't looking to work within any laws, she, and the Tory party, want to get rid of the laws so they can make whatever decisions they want.

All because immigration has been made to sound like it is killing the UK. The numbers are tiny in comparison to the UK. Other countries manage to take many multiples of what the UK take, yet somehow survice.

People like Bravermann have successfully vilified immigrants, even more so than they do with the poor. They are all criminals, no good, lazy, out to simply take whatever they can get.

What particular aspect of international law has the UK got a problem with and wants changed?

Asylum seekers are not entering the country illegally , that's the point.

Seeking asylum is not an illegal act.

Her suggesting that the only way that someone can apply for asylum is to obtain a visa from their corrupt/violent country that allows them to travel to the UK where they can then apply for asylum is just fatuous nonsense.

If they could get Visas and had the wherewithal for a regular travel process don't you think they would?

This isn't cold war Russian Ballerinas we are talking about.

How the hell did her advisors not realise that the first verse of this song would be plastered everywhere and be all over the radio. They were laughing about it on Times radio even before her speech (the song choice was leaked)

just in care people haven’t seen:

You've done me wrong, your time is up

You took a sip from the devil's cup

You broke my heart, there's no way back

Move right out of here, baby, go on pack your bags

Just who do you think you are?

Stop actin' like some kind of star

Just who do you think you are?

Take it like a man, baby, if that's what you are”

    unbelievable incompetence!
