Wedding photos have always been in papers. National paper for celebs and the well-to-do, some local papers for others.

This kind of thing will only increase with the rise of social media. By the time we all die they'll probably post pics of us in our coffins!

The photographer usually has the rights to the pictures so it may be the photographer submitting the photographs to the local newspaper. They are a form of advertising for the photographer.

I always saw those photos as filler for local papers, like the reports of local deaths long after the funeral has been held.

I really don't have any opinion on the couples involved. Let them be.

Locals getting married were frequently featured in local newspapers, particularly in rural areas with sparser populations. It's hardly surprising that this tradition isn't carried forward to the digital media particularly with the advent of the monster ltraveller/rural style weddings now.

Nothing new here.

It's of great interest to some who got married recently particularly if they are aware of the family and the whole thing about liking or hating wedding dress style.

I do cringe at it and it's not for me, but it does shift newspapers. Hell they have photos of first days at school even Halloween at school just to fill pages with photos. Loads of photos of football match teams all ages from all townlands. I must have been in the paper 50 times as a child for no good reason.

The local press photographers show up at weddings, confirmations and communions and take those pics to fill up the pages. Mammies tend to supply the wedding photos if their offspring tie the knot abroad. It's always been part and parcel of the local newspapers. If anything, there's less wedding pics now than 20 years ago.

If by old you mean people in their 30s then I guess so, fair enough if the photographer asked if they could use their photos for advertising but a couple contacting the news to have it published, that's just 🙈

Like I could agree with this a few years ago, but my parents in their late 70s have a what's app group of their siblings, surely they can just share the pictures there rather than publish it for the town/city/country to see. If its for a photographer or newspapers goal to advertise/fill in the pages then that's different

As said, it's usually the wedding photographer and maybe one of the press photographer's who do it, not the couple. And if someone is married abroad older people look forward to seeing their grandchild/niece/nephew in the paper if they weren't at the wedding. Its becoming less of a thing. I don't read the local press. Perhaps you could consider doing that instead of sneering at other people who want to keep an elderly relative happy?

I don't read the newspaper, it comes up on my Google notifications and some people on my social media would share the newspaper article of themselves getting married. This thread is started for different perspectives, I find it cringe in the case where the couple contact the newsstation to have it published and im entitled to my opinion. But I appreciate the other reasons behind why these wedding pictures in the news might come about.

Back before social media there would be full pages of wedding pics every week - likewise FC and confirmation pics, and graduate pics, and first day of school pics and so on and on. Every one of those pics was another two or three papers sold. Not a big deal, who cares?
