Underbody Rust Preventatives Cures ?

I have noticed that a few repairers are pushing having your car treated to prevent rust. I remember quite a few dodgy operators in the past & I have to doubt whether a treatment is going to work on an older car - I always thought that they needed to be applied fairly early on.

    Any experiences/thoughts ?

Ideally you clean down and apply treatment. You get what you pay for.

Some treatments claim they can be applied over rust which is far from ideal. Rubbery types may not fall off when rust falls off but paint types will fall off with rust.

Many people don't want to pay for nut and bolt respray and fix. Many want to hide issues to pass NCT.

Underseal and the likes is more to protect against stone chippings which may lead to rust if just painted. If you underseal a car that rusts from the inside out, it might be catastrophic before you notice it as the underseal will hide the rust until significantly developed.

The problem with this kind of work is you need to either do it yourself or really trust the person you're paying

I've seen two cars they have done, the quality of the work was absolutely shocking

I use the thick black Waxol - now under the Hammerite brand name. Needs yearly reapplying but does work well even over rust.

Also for rust I find the Owatrol Rustrol spray very handy and Owatrol brush on just as good.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Have a little surface rust under the camper.

what I’ve been advised is power wash, scrub off whatever loose rust possible, apply rust converter, apply protection like wax oil or similar

I've used the Deox rust remover gel and the Electrox primer on one of my cars - so far, results are very good. I don't know if BH do a cavity wax or underseal type product, if they do I'd say they are good.

I previously used POR-15 products on a different car and despite meticulous preparation, the rust returned.

If its surface rust this will be ok. Just be sure nothing is from the inside out
