How does the Dublin area feel for trans people?

    My family is deeply considering moving to Dublin/Dún Laoghaire from the US. We know that Ireland is LGBTQ friendly on paper but what is the actual experience here? How frequent are shouted slurs, bathroom policing, staring, etc. I know everything is relative but visiting doesn't tell you much, looking for the truth on the ground.

    Its mixed. Dublin is mostly quite open and lgbt friendly. In the last 2/3 years there has been quite a lot of online TERF and Transphobic hate and this has spilled into some attacks in the real world.

    Positives

    Lots of small community groups e.g. TENI, Dublin Trans Peer Support Group, Outhouse centre, A few different meet up groups

    Most people supportive and friendly

    Good legal situation

    Negatives

    Growth of online hate leading to street attacks and slurs

    Dun Laoghaire is a lovely area - mostly very socially liberal


    Does that all make sense

    It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
