They have a very easy test drive booking system online. If you show up they have nothing.

Same if you show up to Joe Duffy BMW tomorrow. They don’t have a single i4 for viewing. You order based on what you’ve seen online or on the road.

Yeah I just did not expect that the only way to get to see one up close would be a test drive appointment! I imagined the'd have at least a model 3 and model Y just sitting indoor... I thought that's the way showrooms work worldwide.

But anyway - thanks for the offer @...Ghost... my neighbour has a Model 3 and just asked him if he could show us around the car ;). I just did not want to bother the man, lol.

In fairness any time I’ve ever been out in Sandyford, they’ve always had at least a Model 3 there…. So perhaps they are just awaiting a newer showroom display model to come in..

Not in these times. BMW showrooms have no I4's on show.

I'd say your neighbour will only be delighted to show you around their new car, and if he's not, then i'm sure many others would.

    Book

test drive online. Simple process. I did this in July. Closest test date for as actual next day.

turned up on time & had drive by myself for 1.5hrs.

    ordered car in July.

    collected car in September

Haven’t used the auto headlights as I’ve heard they are no use.

The auto wipers are crap and it’s mad that you have to go to the screen to use them manually. started raining on my drive today and they were fine to begin with but just kept going when the rain stopped. I tried giving the screen a wash but it didn’t help. I think it’s just water in there now so will add some washer in tomorrow. Hopefully that helps but I’m not getting my hopes up..

+1 for a car that is well north of 50k it's just not good enough

make sure you get used to using/playing with "voice" commands...very useful while driving where you don't wish to be distracted. works for many of the functions "Turn wipers on" "Open trips" Activate using right scroll button

I find the Auto wipers generally work quite well 99% of the time.

Also, if they ever are acting up, you can bring up the wiper settings by simply pressing the end of the stalk to activate the wiper once or to wash the screen - doing this brings the wiper settings on screen for a few seconds..

the problem is when on cruise control or AP the auto wipers is automatically turned on and cannot be turned off. So if you are having phantom wiping (which a lot of people do have) you have 2 options:

Leave cruise/AP on but have to put up with the wipers wiping a dry screen

Turn off cruise/AP and then turn the wipers off

Neither are ideal workarounds. I'm not an expert on how the AI behind the auto-wipers work but its certainly not great. Surely in an update they can add the option to adjust the wiper settings when on cruise/AP.

Heads up, after my rear windows tint I disclosed same to insurers as I'm up for renewal, they consider it a modification and Engineers Report required. Having worked in the Insurance industry I wanted all loop holes covered in the case of a claim so burying my head in the sand and not saying anything is not an option for me.

On modifications i know a few who have purchased the "acceleration boost" on LR models and haven't noted it as a modification to their insurance companies. Better safe than sorry...................

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,265 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Would it technically be a modification, as the motor's were always capable of the faster speeds.... but were just software restricted...

Could the same be said about remapping an ICE?

So an interesting update on the battery pack shipped with the current M3 RWD:

    Pack Size: 60.5kw

    Nominal Full: 57.5kw

    Buffer: 6kw

    Usable: 51.5kw ~ 52kw

This now makes sense given my previous battery/consumption tests.

Buffer is massive and has definitely increased since Bjorn tested it a few months back when the buffer was 2.5kw.

If anyone on a full charge and use down to almost zero can post any screen grabs of their trips screen of anything past 52kw i would be interested.

So all in all i'd rather if the buffer was lower but the battery size is still the same and you'll be able to drive well past 0%.

I hope the above is useful.

From a few years in Motor insurance.... if it wasn't like that when you got it on day one it's a modification, can't give these guys a get out clause with these values of our Teslas

any good insurance quotes folks are getting these days, most my web enquiries fail on the last hurdle, prob down to it being a Tesla.

Also, my car was reg as a LR on all the Ins systems😐️

They've left it wide open for a range increase via a software update/upgrade in the future once they have all the data they need on the batteries performance

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,608 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

It might actually be worthwhile posting that info on his YT video. There might be a difference in buffers between countries ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭mc2022B2TF

    Yeah.

In fairness tesla were very forthcoming with the information. Excellent in fact. I believe that tesla may have changed the cell make up of the lfp recently and are still gathering real world data so have increased the buffer to be extra cautious.

Look, it's all good as at least I know the facts now. I was worried that something was draining the battery but now I know that's not the issue.

    Basically 100% to 1% = 52kWh

    It's good to know.

Be interesting to know what the SR+ delivered to Ireland earlier this year was.

Anyone else notice that autopilot is very jerky in stop start traffic? it tries to zoom ahead in <10 mph traffic, only to then abruptly stop as it gets closer to the vehicle ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,531 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

Yes, I notice this daily. Happens when car in front moves a few feet

Thanks for the update, it’ll be great if they decrease the buffer in a future update as they have done before in the past. Did Tesla confirm you can tap into the range after 0% and use that massive buffer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭mc2022B2TF

Yeah i'm not sure if the buffer will/can be adjusted over time but lets hope so. Looking online deliveries last March had a much smaller buffer so i'm guessing that they have changed the battery chemistry of late.

Yes they confirmed that past 0% you still have another 6kw approx of range - so depending on how you are driving that should be between 40 and 50km. But you know yourself, no one likes going past zero!

You'll notice that even at 1% battery there is no real loss in power which is extraordinary for an EV - it all points to there big a big buffer and at least it was nice to have it confirmed by Tesla. TBH the lads in Dublin don't really know until the cars start landing exactly what is being delivered in terms of battery - they can only really do diagnostics as and when the cars start arriving as every shipment varies due to the constantly evolving battery tech.

Even RSymons reviewed the MIC M3 a few months back and found a usable battery of 57kWh back then - just goes to show you how things can change in a few months.

Can anyone recommend good rim guards/protectors? Experienced some curb rash this week..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭mc2022B2TF

just to add as a rough guess to where they claimed 440km range comes from:

Based off a battery capacity of 52kWh you would need to be doing 8.46km per kWh to achieve 440km

Or in other words 118 wh/km

Anyone able to achieve them kind of numbers you deserve a medal - for me that acceleration is too hard to resist :)

    Cheers
