Edit: Had a look at Bonkers for you - the discount rates seem to have changed since I last looked. Hover over the text "The price change effective on 07/10/2022 has been factored into your calculations" to show what the price will be from then.

Also...before you decide on suppleer, check on the actual suppliers website to confirm the rates and discount.

You're correct. Don't know what I was looking at earlier. There is a €150 welcome bonus also.

Anyone else getting long delays between electricity bills with Electric Ireland? Haven’t had one since June, gas comes every month.

Submit a meter reading on your account and you will get a bill (or at least I always have). My last bill with EI was very late July. The previous was April but the €200 subsidy was applied there and I think may have been the reason for such a big break.

Have been submitting one every month for past year, yeah I had delay too when the credit was applied but they have gone MIA again.

Do all providers need direct debits on your bank account? Don't fancy a giant bill wiping out all my savings. I'm with electric Ireland at the minute and pay in the post office when I get a bill. Prefer to have that control.

Check the terms and conditions they may ask you for a large deposit if you don't go DD.

I also note the Bord Gais electricity only plan with 34% discount is now gone from their website it was there before lunchtime.

I might be wrong but I think it is an EI condition to pay by direct debit & to use online billing in order to get the 5.5% discount.

Had a bill mid July & next one is due to issue on 28th Sept. I noticed that the meter reader called today. He hasn't called for about 4 months.

Want to get this straight, so ESB Networks are finding homeowners leaving a note on their meter not to install a smart meter? Im keen to avoid them too at least while the tarriffs are so high so dont want it forced upon me. Is there a specific email address to ESB Networks to ensure one doesnt get installed?

Just been looking on their website. The unit prices look to be increasing soon, but is it the case that you can still fix on the current prices if you sign up before then? Also, does Bonkers not include the EV plan in its comparison?

Most of the suppliers seem to be reducing their % discounts in favour of sign on bonuses. This of course will be in their favour if/when there are further increases in the standard unit prices. It will particularly disadvantage high users.

Now that Panda has confirmed they are leaving the electricity & gas markets their customers have until 28th Sept to switch to a supplier of their choice. After that date customers will automatically switch to Electric Ireland for electricity & Bord Gais for gas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭1992ChainGang

And will automatically be put on the standard unit rate, so by far best option is to sign up to a contract before Sept 28

Is there a calculator online to compare usage on a smart tariff compared to standard 24 hour tariff?

As in, I input what my usage was & it tells me that the cost would be if I switched to the smart tariff (with the sat/sun free) ?

I was always a Bord Gais dual fuel customer and signed up for a 12 month contract a couple of weeks ago with the 39% discount on both.I presume new contract starts straight away so if i submit meter readings before the 2nd of October price rise i'll be billed on both with the 39% discount?

I have a Smart Meter but I am not on a Smart Meter tariff, just the 24 hour tariffs. Energia advised me not to go on Smart Tariffs when I joined them as its more expensive. Is this correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,263 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It depends on your usage, but for most people it is dearer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,192 ✭✭✭bren2001

That jump is insane, a little over €1,000 for signing up this week as opposed to last week. My contract isn't up until the end of October. I'm starting to wonder did I miss a trick in paying the €100 exit fee and locking in the big discounts. I'm holding out hope that the providers removing the discounts until they see what the budget is and what the EU do.

I think you will have to create your own spreadsheet to do the comparison. In my own case smart meter plans would be dearer at the moment than my day/night meter charges. I might be cynical but I am of the view that smart meters will benifit the suppliers (e.g. no need to employ meter readers) rather than the consumer. I don't need a smart meter to work out when the cheaper electricity rates are available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Some crazy trends at the moment. Most suppliers seem to be phasing out discounts. For electric only Bord Gais is dearer than 2 of the prepay energy companies. Look's like suppliers don't want new customers at the moment as the savings for moving are decreasing. The talk of windfall taxes has driven supplier prices up as they have moved to protect their existing margins. I'm not sure Robin Hood economics is going to help the consumers and ultimately may make the EU unattractive to multi nationals. What happens when a member state moves to put windfall taxes on other sectors will it frighten away pharma, IT companies etc?

Board Gais rep at the house offering discount package on electricity with discount that brings price per unit down to 31c plus one free day electricity per weekend (you have to nominate Saturday or Sunday)

thanks for that. I think I will stay on the 24 hour tariff. I live alone and have very low usage.

Is the Bord Gáis 39% offer gone for Electricity?

Thanks, just changed myself yesterday but was trying to convince the parents to change...but too late now for them then!

Check their website directly rather than bonkers or on here.

We went for the 34% discount green standard meter with BG. Hey! We are green and obscene. 🤣 Partner wanted green. We can tell our kids we did our best to save the planet for future generations even if Bill Gates and family fly private jet. 🤣🤣

Also, haven't an EV or night or smart meter so other options limited or complicated right now.

Hard enough for us to just switch provides. SSE airtricity didn't value our long commitment to them 🤣 and their green energy. Only offered 15% discount.

Will see how things turn out over the next year re EVs smart meters etc etc meanwhile ESB making big profits.

Denis O Brien and friends will send us all a postcard at Christmas time from Barbados saying "having a great time, glad you're not here".

10% discount seems to be the only/best thing on their direct website now!!!

Is that from midnight to midnight? Also how do they monitor your free day? Do you have to submit readings twice a week?
