Resent examples are non existent I think.

Last Irish president to die in office was Erskine Childers in the early 1970s.

I'd have to research what happened then.

The last US president to die in office was Kennedy and the NFL played a few days later, something that they have regretted ever since.

Does anyone actually know what the reaction of the British people has been to this ?

The people who really understand the monarchy and what it means to the country.

Well you made a pretty sure statement for a man can't think of any examples.

Soccer fans in the UK seem annoyed and no one else seems to care. Hard to know when you only have Twitter and stuff to go off.

No English people I know like the monarchy so they are annoyed by all the pomp and overreaction.

I’m using this time as a chance to reacquaint myself with La liga and serie A. Extended the now tv sports for €10 a month. Premier league will be back soon enough. It’s the fans who had flights, hotels etc booked to attend games that I feel sorry for.

When is a decision on next weekends games likely to be made ?

I was in Old Trafford on Thursday when the news of her death was released. The fans were glued to the news coverage but there was no obvious outpouring of grief or anything. The place was a bit subdued but only for the fact it was all over the screens I wouldn't have known she had died (I only found out from seeing it on one of the screens).

I got there quite early as it was my first time and I wanted to watch the pre-match warm up, etc. We got chatting to some of the stewards and security staff and the general consensus was that there was no way they wanted any matches cancelled this weekend but it was inevitable. Any of the fans I spoke to or I heard talking about it were hoping nothing would be cancelled at all. Anyone who travelled a bit of distance (like myself) were very relieved it wasn't cancelled. We were glad UEFA insisted it went ahead (security told us that the Man Utd officials did ask about a cancellation and UEFA said absolutely not as fans were already on the way to the ground and it was too close to kick off).

The minutes silence was adhered to impeccably and the Real Sociedad fans were excellently behaved inside and outside the stadium.

I hate how the minutes silence has turned to applause in the GAA simply because the people were copying what they saw the soccer ones do on the tv. Yes, Hill 16, I’m looking at you.

Any particular reason you hate it? A mark of respect is a mark of respect.

I'd be very surprised if games went ahead. Policing will be a big issue with the funeral next weekend.

Maybe after a week of mourning, they will realise a week is more than eneogh . She was 96 , lived a long and privelleged life, perspective.

No because policing will genuinely be an issue for the funeral. At the very least games in and around London would be fked.

They should have seen that and played this week but we're too busy trying to look the good patriots.

Policing will be the reason next week's game is called off, if it is.

Tbh, I'm on the fence whether to call it off or not. A four week league break at a time when Liverpool are struggling for first team players is like a gift tbh.

Chelsea with the new manager bounce wouid be a very tricky fixture.

Hopefully they just decide asap either way.

Was Match of the Day this week just a retrospective of Elizabeth handing out trophies

Games may actually go ahead next weekend , don’t see why policing would be a problem?!

Its actually really refreshing to be hearing less tweets and rumours sh*te circulating. I dislike a lot of that wrestling pantomime drama crap. This is what it was more like in the old days and I’d love a season of it.

The players play football and you hear f**k all from them , what goes on the dressingroom in between matches or when they are not happy. That’s the way it should be but this online generation want every single update instantly , surprised a player hasn’t a toilet cam so people can follow them on the jacks.

Rangers v Napoli has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday because of 'severe limitations on policing resources'. Rangers FC v SSC Napoli rescheduled to 14 September | Inside UEFA | UEFA.com

Obviously as the week goes on those policing resource problems will be an England/London issue, and there is much less flexibility for moving EPL game times because of European games and subsequent international games. There was some talk of reversing fixtures (e.g., Chelsea v Liverpool played in Anfield) but that wouldn't solve all the games and has its own problems (Everton also at home) and is probably a non-runner.

Not looking good, and really hammers home how badly wrong they got it this weekend.

Coffin will still be in Scotland on the Tuesday, so that would explain that.

I can't imagine policing being too much of an issue outside of London given that the funeral's not until Monday.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

How many will head to London for the funeral I'd say they will have to bring in police from all over the Country for it.

Over million went to Di's 25 years ago I'd say even more will be there for this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,087 ✭✭✭giveitholly

But will they just postpone the London games or postpone them all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,393 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

British Transport Police are gonna need a lot of back up especially at certain junction stations.

But if the funeral is Monday it should be fine.

The minutes applause was brought in to stop drown out idiots. A minutes silence in Ireland was always respected. Then morons began to clap just because British soccer fans clapped. I dislike it because it’s something we do now because morons copied idiots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,119 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Ok, but without referencing the timeline of whether the chicken came before the egg, why is a minutes silence more respectful than a minutes applause?

Italian soccer was doing before England (maybe not the first) so technically we are copying them.

I prefer the applause despite it's reason for being. It's less weird and morbid than the silence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,875 ✭✭✭doc_17

Well if you think clapping is more respectful than silence, next time you’re at a funeral, clap the coffin up the aisle.

Anyway, way off topic! Please God the PL returns next weekend.

That is a pretty impressive attempt to avoid directly answering a question. Fair play.

    Games in London, more so.

Don't know what events or planning is going on for Monday week, but whatever it is could impact the ability of the police to assign required resources to police the matches. If that is the case, then the games can't go ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,139 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

in football news Costa has signed for Wolves - ther new striker did his ACL on first game.

Hopefully most games take place this weekend, the funeral is Monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,264 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

played 19 games in the last 2 seasons, i think I read. so big question marks over his ability to make an impact I would think, but then they had to do something.

Was very interested to see how that other new striker would do as he was a player United were linked with (in case Ronaldo left), shame about the injury.

Arsenals Europa League game on Thursday is off due to policing issues. It's pretty much guaranteed now that there are not going to be any games played in London next weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭Pipmae

It's a bloody mess isn't it. They should just play them behind closed door a la Covid time but no doubt that would cause other issues.

Well it would be expected there will be thousands upon thousands of people hitting London over that weekend all police forces will be required for that.
