Notching of 9” x 2” joist for 40mm waste pipe

Hi,

Can i notch out a 9” x 2” timber joist for 40mm waste pipe to sit flush with the top of the joist?

I am a bit concerned about notching out too much and compromising the structural integrity of the joist.

If you're really worried screw a 16" lenght of 4x2 to the 9×2 below the notch.

I agree with Jimf. It's far better to bore a hole in the middle of the joists. Using flexible waste pipe is a good option. One meter length in the link below but it comes in much longer length

If I turn my trap facing this way in picture. I can then come of the trap with a 40mm waste elbow through the centre of the joist. Regs state that the hole be no larger than 1/4 size of the joist. Joist is 9 inch, so I am allowed to drill a hole in the centre up to 56mm.
