Coolant leak, like ICE BMWs... That's the risk of using same platform for ICE and EV cars

    /sarcasm

Hopefully it will be fixed for the retest.

But it’s true. Lazy design by bmw on what should have been a brilliant EV.

While that all makes sense what doesnt make sense if that there was no warning the coolant was low. Bet if your washer level is low it bongs like crazy.

I think BMW's response said "refrigerant was low", not coolant.

I dont think any car gives an error when the refrigerant gas goes low. You'll just notice that its not pushing as much cold air as before.

    The retest will be interesting.

I think thats splitting hairs, if it can limp the car it should have a warning sensor on it. They put sensors on everything else. or use a proxy like the battery temperature deviating too much from the factory curves.

I wont disagree that they should do better.

Just making the point that cars dont typically have a sensor for low refrigerant and the car wasn't technically broken down, just inhibited and there is a visual indication on the dash that you are inhibited.... it just didn't specifically point the finger at low refrigerant.

Every conceivable fault wont have a corresponding light.... that's what diagnostics are for. You can argue for an extra sensor and a corresponding light but no other car has it for that fault. If they overheat or are too cold it shows it on the dash and that's it.

Yeah I get you. But chances are that anyone not paying as much attention as Bjorn would not really have noticed, and I dont think it was storing a fault. Once a pressurised system loses any pressure its only going one way. Should have thrown a fault and said safe to drive but get inspection. Sure every fault wont have a light. but the car should have know it was operating outside parameters and needed looking at. The cooling system of the battery is as integral as the oil level on an ICE. My point being its a critical drive system and more important to know than the washer fluid level....but BMW are thinking iCE still. Bricked EV at charging stations are not a good look for any of us

Really delighted to have this car back I must admit. It's an absolute joy to drive.

Two Cork - Dublin trips the last two weeks. The DAP makes motorway driving hassle free and the driving assistant is mint in Dublin rush hour traffic.

Have done 2k km since I got it back 2 weeks ago.

Does that shine out from under the door handle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭rodge123

They pilot sport 4 tyres that it came with? Any time protection on them?

How’s the range working out on the long trips?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Wasn't obvious where from at first but yeah I think it's under the door handle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

Yes re Michelin PS4. What do you mean re time protection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,146 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

i think he means rim protection, i dont think PS4s are great in that regard.

I leave Cork at 90%, top up to 90% in Kill North (maybe 25 mins), park overnight in Dublin and make it back to Cork without stopping with usually 30-40% next day. That's cruising at 130km per hour on motorway.

Dropping to 120 or even 110 (not that I would want to be that guy) and you see an immediate difference but if I'd bought an EV for the savings/mileage then this isn't the one I'd have chosen.

Overnight charge from zero to full is approx. 8 euro on night meter, and a 40Kwh charge at Ionity around another 10 euro so Cork-Dublin return for 20 euro fuel is not bad IMHO. Last time I did it in the 530e loaner it was 70 euro, and maybe 50 euro diesel in the 520D.

I'd say my range around city is between 450 and 500km - although I usually only charge to 80%.

Range on motorway at 130kmh is around 350 km - again just my experience, if I drove it more conservatively I could get better range but where's the fun in that.

As in tyre protection/ insurance? Nah, I will take my chances. I don't do huge mileage and only keep a car for 2 years max anyway so not worth it in my use case.

I don't think I ever realised just how useful the HUD is either - not had that in any of my previous cars but I think I'll include it in future even if it means paying extra. Really underrated feature.

HUD is a very underestimated feature.

Have it in the 535d. It’s always on.

Current 221 i4 eDrive40 we have on loan done 490km on a test cycle. City center and N roads. No motorway though.

Considering swapping the 530e into it.

no rim protection on the actual tyres themselves,

some tyres have a nice fat lip that gives some element of protection to your allows.

BTW dont bother with that charging to 80% nonsense, especially if you arent keeping it for the long term.

If it’s the same as on the 3series it’s actually coming from under the area below the door sill behind the wheel arch.

BMW call it a welcome carpet light or some such jargon

PS4 S that came with my car in 2019 have no protection, rear replacements ordered 2 months ago have it. Same tyre, PS4S

strange, have seem similar reports, id swear the B'stone altezzas on my old etron had it and on my new one doesnt as well which is unfortunate with 21" wheels you have to be beyond careful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭yllw.ldbttr

How did you manage to get an i4 as a loaner, or was it an extended test drive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 503 ✭✭✭PaulJoseph22

    I wouldn't buy a car that didn't have a H.U.D. Essential for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭UhOh

I love the HUD. Never had it before. Will definitely option it in on any future car.

    Night vision.

Have it on my current 530e. Only use it to show friends. It’s a party piece. Anyone ever use it in anger?

Looks like a little bit of protection alright. Not sure why all manufactures don’t put tyres with good rim protection on them when tyres low profile in particular…they are generally nice expensive alloys that you’d imagine people want to stay looking good. Doesn’t fully protect them but certainly helps reduce chances of damage.

    Maybe I’m just a fussy yoke! 😂

I cannot get the iDrive 8 digital assistant to function properly in some circumstances.

When I ask it to (using the ‘Hey BMW’ prompt or the steering wheel button) to ‘take me home’ or such like, it works fine.

But if I ask it to navigate somewhere (for example 'Navigate to Circle K’) it loses itself. It clearly recognises what i’m saying as the words ‘Circle K’ appear correctly on the screen; but the DA is unable to locate anything and then goes into a sequence of saying ‘pardon’ over and over again.

By contrast, if I enter ‘Circle K’ manually, the expected plethora of suggested destinations appears.

I tried this in a 320 with iDrive 7 today and it works perfectly.

The dealer took the car in and reloaded the software but it still doesn’t work.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?
