Ten Hag is doing ok this past 2 weeks. Yes, he has gone back to basics and trying to shore it up at the back but that’s what he should have done from the very start. He deserves massive credit for standing up to Ronaldo and the team is better for it.

He had to drop Maguire, it’s an important step for the team but Maguire will get back in as Varane is injury prone. Nice to see Rashford playing well even though I’d be happy to see Utd lose every game they ever play!

Not surprised at all about how it's gone with Rodgers. Hes still not able to handle the defensive side of the game.

I think Rodgers is generally quite liked by Liverpool fans, always get a good reception when he comes back to Anfield anyway. But he seems to have gathered a lot of hate from opposition fans from his time spent at Liverpool, I get some of it the Brodgers/David Brent stuff, but he was fairly inoffensive on the side-line and the likes so I never really understood a lot of the hate from the opposition fans. Some of it has carried to this day.

Tbh Ive never seen him getting grief from anyone other than some Liverpool fans, on Boards anyway. I get that he isnt an upper tier manager, I absolutely wouldn't want him managing United but he was involved when Liverpool had their best league season in a generation and just fell short. The club were hardly competing at the sharp end of the season year in year out before he came in and its not as if he got them relegated. As I said, I just find it really weird the hate he gets when he didnt do anything other than not be good enough for a top level job. 🤷‍♂️

So Liverpool were poor in defence and brilliant in attack and Rodgers gets blamed for not setting them up to defend but doesn't get praised for getting them scoring goals for fun? If all credit goes to Suarez and Sturridge for the goals scored, then surely the blame goes to the regular backs for conceding so many?

There would be very much mixed feelings about him amongst the Celtic support but that is more about how he left and all the sh*te he talked beforehand, nothing to do with his actual ability as a manager which is unanimously appreciated.

I never got the Suarez/Sturridge argument. Surely the manager gets credit for the fact that they both showed the best form of their careers under him. It's like arguing that Klopp got lucky that Salah has been in the form of his career so Klopp somehow deserves less credit for what he has achieved.

I'll always have a massive soft spot for Rodgers - the fella gave me one of the most fun, exciting seasons of my life in 13/14.

I also think he's an excellent manager, with one big failing that he has trouble reinventing a team over time. He'll come in with a general plan, figure out how to get the best out of what he has, but once that goes stale (through either time, or transfers etc), he has trouble going back to the drawing board. An incredible manager for one cycle is seems.

I 100% disagree with the stuff that he just got lucky with that Liverpool front-line, and I can't really understand how anyone who watched them could think that... like, the players themselves were excellent obviously - but the interplay and tactics got the most out of them. It wasn't just Suarez or Sturridge doing it all by themselves, it was brilliant attacking interplay that cut teams open, with their quality at the end to make it count. It is zero coincidence that from when he arrived, each half-season Liverpool's points per game was higher than the previous one. There was consistent improvement, right up until Suarez left, and Sturridge broke. From then onwards, he just couldn't reinvent the team and pull off something incredible a second time.

Would say exactly the same has happened at Leicester - he had them way above where they should be by getting the absolute most out of what he came into (getting so close to 4th twice seems to be used as a stick to beat him with, rather than an achievement that was way above expectation... getting so close has been his curse). But again, once it all got a bit stale he's really struggled to pull out a second magnificent team.

Looking at stats for the season so far and come across a strange one ,

Martinez off United has lost only 3 aerial battles but has also only won 5

Van Dijk has lost 7 aerial battles but has won 22 ,

Is it a bit bizarre that teams are targeting a giant like VVD more in the air & not the smaller Martinez

or is it that VVD attacks and commits to more aerial duels than Martinez,

For instant at corner's &free kicks is VVD more likely to go try win ball & Martinez doesn't compete leaves it to he's partner & mops up ? Like on long balls is Martinez letting forwards win header without competing & waiting to clean it up on the ground ?

Ground duels are how you'd expect

    Martinez lost 11 won 18

    VVD lost 12 won 26

I would of thought who they were asked to mark etc during set pieces would be a bigger factor than one commiting more than another?

For set pieces you'll often have the big lads doing zonal to attack the ball primarily, and smaller lads man-marking to get in the way of the opposition's main threats. So in that case, you'd expect the likes of VVD and Varane to be given the higher-volume areas.

Jesse Marsch charged by FA for quite valid shout for penalty. Incompetent officials not charged with anything.

After being booked the previous week, he had better just suck it up. Unfortunately.

Another defeat for Chelsea this evening.

I'd say Tuchel is thanking his lucky stars that Roman has gone, or else he'd be signing on at this stage.

Whoever said Haaland is a cheat code...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭chicorytip

He wears jeans at work. Deserves to be suspended for that alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭Pogue eile

Salah's inclusion there is a joke to be fair, Sterling or Martinelli surely much more deserving - actually no Arsenal player and they top of the league, no Brighton player yet somehow Newcastle have four, doesn't make much sense to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,955 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I'm not 100 % how they are worked out to be honest,

Salah has started the season poor for him but still far better than Martinelli .,Goes to show how high of a standard we all expect from MO

Martinelli has 3 goals to Salah 2 but Salah ahs 2 assists to Martinelli's 0

Also chance created for example Salah is already at 24 (the most in the Prem) & Martinelli is 14

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,673 ✭✭✭✭JPA

    Its purely statistical.

Salah for example has created the most chances in the league.

I don't know that you've seen from Sterling to suggest he should be there though.

But statistically you would expect to see a few Arsenal in there.

    Tuchel gone from Chelsea.

    Didn't expect that.

    Tuchel gone.

    Tuchel is gone.

It was inevitable, despite them having more points than Liverpool in the league.

It was obvious he was losing his mind on the sidelines, and to be honest, the Tuchel cycle was coming to its normal natural conclusion.

    Who'll Chelsea go for now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,395 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Where do the numbers come from ?

Is it the fantasy football form thing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,222 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Brendan Rodgers would be the comedy move.

Potter would be the maverick move.

I suspect they might go for Pochettino.

As much as I thought Tuchel was a good manager it was hard to warm to him due to antics. Especially when things weren't going his way.

    Crazy by Chelsea,

He literally just spent 250 million

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,222 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

That's the best part of the whole story.

Boehly appointed himself sports director, ploughed £250m in to support a manager that he, a couple of games after the spending ended, doesn't rate highly enough to keep at all.
