Perhaps true if you need to do lots of motorway driving. Or maybe it's a Dublin thing. Certainly in my 3-4 years of EV driving I've probably queued once, and diverted to a different charge point 2-3 times. Granted most my routes are serviced by ionity or a number of "hubs" from ESB.

I considered a M3 after our Ioniq, but for the family we needed something bigger, and Tesla couldn't offer that at a price point we could meet... Or get close to

Ah its not that bad...ESB are getting more and more 150kw out there and ionity is great if a little sparce towards the west and north. If you have a car with 300+ km range and dont make big trips a lot there is not problem outside tesla. Also.....and I know this is unpopular but the network will open up soon enough. In the fast paced world of EV's the tesla offerings are getting a little jaded these days....

The unfortunate piece of the SuC opening up in Ireland is they will be swamped due to dire state of high speed charging infrastructure. Only time will tell…

I'd much rather they remain exclusive...but i'm a little biased now. If opening up, the non-Tesla rate should be much higher. I have yet to see a Tesla SuC cable left on the ground in the lashing rain, but see this all the time at E-Car stations. No wonder they are so often out of service.

If they do open them up in Ireland I can’t see it being every site, as if you look at their map showing opened sites in Europe, you’ll notice that within 10 minutes or so of an opened site, there will be a non opened site! The only situation in ireland where that scenario might apply will be Castlebellingham, when the newly announced site there gets opened, and then maybe also Dublin North when it opens (can’t ever see Sandyford SuC opening to non Tesla). Maybe also Ballacolla when the new Cashel site opens….

we’ll probably never have the concentration of Superchargers like they have in mainland Europe where there’ll always be a Tesla only SuC close enough to an opened SuC..

I’m not convinced on a new CB site, still think that’s an upgrade of existing ones, just can’t see justification for three sites on top of each other

Tesla used to be far cheaper than eCars but Tesla have quietly upped their costs with virtually all rates now 50c inc load sharing SuC, eCars 42c subscription and 46 PAYG for their 150kW units so interesting times especially when Tesla do not consider SuC as profit centres….somethings changing somewhere given correct SuC price increases

For ease of use the SuC is worth that extra couple of cents per kWh. Reverse in, plug in and it's charging in seconds.

No messing around with an app, no tapping cards, no wondering will someone be parked arseways blocking access.

If you have a 300/400km range EV with a home charger and if you can granny charge at distant relations and book hotels with chargers (and there are lots and lots of hotels with chargers) then Ireland is very suited to never needing a 50kW+ charger. For 99% of drivers on 99% of trips they may not need a charge from start of day to end of day. That's kind of unique to Ireland where you need to book a ferry to travel further.

That said if you are city hopping or heading across Europe Tesla's system just makes life easier. It's crazy people buying 100k non Tesla's when they have massive problems charging in public. There is rows at esb chargers from time to time due to queues and queue jumpers.

I'm actually impartial to the opening up of the network. I'd be fine with it if it assists in a solid expansion of the network across Ireland in general. Competition is a good thing.

In the fast paced world of EV's the tesla offerings are getting a little jaded these days....

I'm yet to see any EV that has the navigation as feature rich as Teslas and a better battery management system. Possibly in some of the high end marques like the EQC, but these are not affordable to the vast majority of EV owners.

Just to throw more charging issues into the mix, the cybertruck.

For non twitter users, guess it helps people pulling trailers.

Would also cater for other trucks if network opens up like F150 Lightning, Rivian RT1 etc

At Sandyford this afternoon for my first charge there. It's small, but seems to work well. I would say tight enough with 4 Model S or X.

They did say there has been no queue as yet, but cannot see that lasting....

With the X when I was charging it was a tight squeeze, someone was in the second spot so I had to reverse into the 4th (access issues meant spot 1 and 3 were not easily reversible into). I'd suggest the smaller 3/y size cars would be fine but the S and X will find charging there when multiple spots are taken difficult

@slave1 they are likely losing the lease for Castlebellingham N+S sites.

I think it's related to the mad energy prices in mainland Europe at the moment. The Finnish wholesale electricity price for example have gone from typical 0-5 c/kWh to 40-50 c/kWh and peaks are at close to 100c and I think the maximum the electricity trading system currently allows is like 300c/kWh but will automatically expand beyond that the next day if the prices hits the current limit. The prices in Baltics and Germany are even higher.

Ireland is somewhat sheltered from the European market due to low import/export capability but I would expect the prices to keep creeping up here towards the common prices out there. The market is in a total mess in Europe this year due to drought and war which affects all the energy generation forms out there.

Are there many 100k+ non-tesla EVs out there? The most expensive at the moment that I could find in a quick google is ~60k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,485 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Etron GT, Taycan, EQB/EQC/EQS/EQE, ETron black.

They all have faster charging speeds than a Tesla Model S. Mind you, if you can't find a charger that isn't much good... Fair point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,485 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

No they don't. Model S peaks at 145kW in europe currently, and takes about 35-40 minutes to >80%. The EQB and EQC don't charge very fast at all. The Etron GT and Taycan charge very fast but only on 800v chargers which there are very few of in ireland. On 400v chargers they charge slower than an S because they have to step up the voltage using an onboard DC:DC inverter and this comes with over 10 %losses

Me in my SR+ pulling 170kW………. Without even needing to pre-condition……

I'll be doing that soon too, but not without preconditioning (LFP!)

Seriously though look at the charge curve for the EQ range, they are awful (except the EQS). Same for the taycan/etrongt if charging at a 50 -150kW 400v charger. Awful.

Splash and dash, that's what it's all about, 10minutes at a high power charger then off you go

    34C outside 🙂

Noticed when going to Mahon Point on one of the really hot days it only preconditioned for 5mins. 2020 SR+

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,155 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah, I was in France / Germany a few weeks ago when they had their 40 degree heat waves…..

my last 2 charges on the 2nd day in Germany needed no pre-conditioning whatsoever…. And got the full 170kW both times!!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,486 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

And to think I'd get 120kW in a flash on my S before fairly shape throttle to the 80's. I'm 8k kms in on my 3 and never SuC, in fact I got one free Fast charge the week I got it and AC home (PV) charging since. I thought I'd miss free SuC but in reality PV charging had taken over

Drove to Killarney and Listowel yesterday in 2019 SR+, 7 hour round trip.

7:15am start, Celbridge to Birdhill, 10 mins for a pee and a coffee and a top up. ABC

Drove to Listowel, then Killarney and then stopped off on way back in Tralee super charger for lunch.

Back up to 95% there mainly because the food is slower than charging :)

Another wee stop in Birdhill on way back with yet another coffee. ABC

    Home at 6pm...zzzzz

Tesla make it so easy though.

In the newer 60kWh LFP car, you'd have managed with just one 30 minute stop in Tralee.

Can't beat the Tesla SuCs though, for reliability, speed & availability.
