Generator as a home backup, dos and don'ts

Just wondering what are the general dos and don'ts if you're using a consumer generator at home for powercuts? Changeover switch from the mains being the main one. Not using high wattage devices, normal kettles, immersions. Anything else?

No, I'm waiting on an electrician to call for some other jobs and i'm going to make some changes to the connections and location of the generator then.
With the potential for power cuts a bit higher this winter i'd like to have it tied down and a tidy solution in place.
