I would say numbers will be down hugely for the marathon this year. Numbers are down a good bit at most races and given the commitment for a marathon I think you will see a lot of people with deferred entries not turning up.

A lot of people will be cancelling hotels the week before so you could pick up cheap accommodation if you are willing to hang tough but with the training and time required not many will want to risk that.

People should be allowed to transfer upto a month beforehand. Plenty of people who might want to run will miss out.

Based on races to date this summer we will be lucky to see 15000 start the marathon.

Along with the gouging of hotels it's going to hit hard, at least the money is in the bank for the organisers so they won't take the hit, but there will be an awful lot of merchandise binned due to no shows.

I agree that the numbers in the marathon will be down. Chatting people over the last few weeks and when I asked many of them if they were doing the marathon the reply was along the lines of "Well, I have an entry", some don't seem to be committing to it. I understand marathon training is tough, but I don't get the nervous anticipation from many people.

A lot of people are aware of the hotel situation, have been told first hand accounts of hotels calling people to tell them their room was no longer available during the summer.

With the pending student accommodation crisis on top of trying to rehouse refugees it's going to be a mess for the next two months as no doubt the Govt will stumble blindly into it as it if happened overnight.

With this event an overnight stay is essential for the majority of participants, no getting around this consideration.

I have a spot in DCM this year that I won’t be using. Hypothetically speaking, how could someone else use it. Presume I would still need to pick up my race entry?

Meet someone at the RDS and give them the pack

That’s my issue. I’ll be out of the country that weekend. Presume no way to transfer so? I just assumed there would be a legit mechanism to transfer the entry - clearly wishful thinking!

I think someone can pick up the pack on your behalf.

4 out of 5 in my running pals now officially not doing it due to a combination of injury/lack of motivation.

All carried over numbers from 2021, , tried giving them away to people , serious lack of uptake, shame to see them going to waste.

Normally there would be a stampede of people chasing spare numbers.

Could someone DM me if that's they have a number going to waste please?

I'm entered into Chicago a few weeks before, training didn't go to plan for a number of weeks but I'm back on track now and the extra couple of weeks could make a big difference.

I collected a friend's number in 2019. They sent me an email with the code and just said in email could I pick up as they were at a wedding on the Saturday. No problems with that.

    wave 2 will be pacers from 3:45 - 4:15.

    wave 3 will be pacers from 4:15 - 5hrs.

wave 4 will be pacers from 5hrs up.

Is that confirmed anywhere? 3:30 pacer used to be in wave 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 sgal

Thanks for that. I got my email today too and I’m in wave 3. I was hoping to go along with the 4h pacers. The FAQ on the dcm website says that you can just go to the start on the day and look out for your chosen pacers and fall in with them, but as far as I know with the different wave times etc you can’t really do that??

From the faq on dcm website:

Following the success of the pacers over the past few years we have included them again this year. There will be pacers for the following times: 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.30, 3.40, 3.50, 4.00, 4.10, 4:20, 4.30 4:40, 4:50 and 5.00. They will run the race at a steady effort throughout, and aim to finish a few seconds under each time band. To be paced by them during the race, just turn up at the start, look for the runners wearing backpacks with large flags, and stand behind the corresponding time.

Backpacks with flags? A bit disappointed there's no balloons.

Hopefully it work out that way and you can just line up with the pacers you want to go to. Signed up 3 years ago when I had no idea..

Thanks. They will be gone soon, they are against the rules.

I had the indignity of the balloon bobbing against my head as I ran infront of the pacer one year for about a half kilometre, as the wind was blowing it forward. I had no where to go it was so congested, so eventually sped up, which might have been the reason I made it under the goal time :) Gave me a good laugh along with the few kids that saw it.

There are so many numbers available you'll be doing well to give them away, let alome sell them.

Huge numbers of deffered 2020 runners not going to run

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭Pinoy adventure

Having just checked adverts there is at least 20 adds up today alone.

donedeal and marketplace is full of them too.

I would stay in wave 1 just to be able to use their entry gate. You'll have no queues for the toilets while you allow wave 1 to head out. Also gives you 10 minutes at a deserted start line to compose yourself, until wave 2 are allowed in. I did this in 2019, which allowed me to wait for the 3.30 pacers in peace - would highly recommend.
