The homelessness crisis has absolutely nothing to do with Ukrainians.

The homelessness crisis is where it's at because people have voted for landlords for the past 100 years, in the bizarre belief that they'd somehow put everyone else's best interests ahead of their own, aaaany Dáil now.

So we ended up with a Dáil that now has 80 landlords, according to the latest figures. If you're a landlord, which makes more sense - have local authorities provide affordable social housing? Or have local authorities renting property from landlords, combined with HAP payments allowing you to keep your rental prices up?

What?! Rockets and cruise missiles can blow your house up whether you've a Ford Fiesta outside, or a high-end Audi. 🙄

Yes, that's what I said. Readings not your strong point, then?

When asked if Ireland was taking in more Ukrainian refugees than other European countries, Mr O’Gorman said he did not think there was any mechanism under which countries can refuse or demand proportionality.

In other words yes we are.

There is no mechanism to ask for more Refugees than we can take, but that didn't stop them.

Backtracking now I see, obviously reading is not YOUR strongpoint, but sure when your wrong muddy the waters by throwing an insult, par for the course with your type

Not great to be taking tens of thousands in with homeless growing and growing . Foreign nationals being a huge part of that problem

Given the levels of hatred shown here on this thread towards these guests fleeing a war, I guess it was only going to be a matter of time before someone thought it was a good idea to verbalise such hatred in person.

Hopefully they will be identified and prosecuted through the courts.

I wonder how many posts until someone tries to justify this behaviour.

Any link to the video ? Could be Russian propaganda masking as Irish.

Maybe Maryanne can house them in her fantasy land

Well I would like to see the offending video so we can actually judge what's going on. Article does not explain really. We know a country at war will be happy whipping up hate. But there is none on this thread.

If they can afford to hire au pairs they can be relieved of medical cards and any benefits.

Most posters are reasonable on here.

I guarantee you most of them also want Ukrainians to be safe and have a good oitcome from the war.

You dont get to demonise other posters here wirh a random throwaway dig.

Will be chaos at schools as they move so many refugees around and try to fit in 4000 extra students that arrived over the Summer. Ireland already has amongst the largest class sizes im Europe. Most of these kids cant speak English, may habe other issues also.

Many schools already.struggling with current waiting lists and severe lack of teachers.

There is no central database but the dept of education says 'they have enough resources' even though nobody knows what happens from one week to the next and most Dublin school principals say they cant get teachers!

Also lack of school bus places.

Are you serious, helping hotels recover from covid losses.

I think it’s you that needs to get with the program here to see what's really happening concerning these hotels.

Alot of these hotels are being ran by consortium's and the likes and when this gravy train runs out they will be left to rot until the next government ba##s up happens.

lol so if we did nothing or not much previously we should go ahead and sacrifice everything to "help" now? And what do we do when some other war start how can we do more than we do now? Or do we take sabatical for the next few wars?

"Help" should never be compulsory but voluntary. Go ahead, give what you deem to be proper and just. Out of your own pocket please.

If it was streamed on social media, surely identification and prosecution is a formality?

Just like Katherine Zappone, her wish is to scoop them all up and take them home with her.

Oh wait, Maryanne hasn’t opened her home..

    Read the article more carefully,

“An incident live-streamed on social media is understood to have drawn negative internet commentary towards Ukrainian refugees”

The fear of violence mentioned seems to come from the comments online, not the incident. Without any more information we cant assume that it was even a negative incident. Maybe the shop live-streamed themselves giving away stuff, and didn’t like the comments they got? Such is social media. It’s a nothing article, typical of the deceptive press we have now.

Another quote : “‘She said there have been no acts of violence against volunteers and they have not reported any incidents or concerns to An Garda Síochána. Security staff at the shopping centre said the hub has been shut since Monday and they have also not reported any incidents to An Garda Síochána.”

We are living in scary times for anyone not in the 1%. Genuine fears of fuel rationing, another electricity hike, so many people being pushed into food poverty, interest rates increasing, not being able to find a house to rent or live in, then if you do- pay extortionate rent and mortgage, student accommodation crisis, businesses having to close because of the above, etc etc.

People are absolutely allowed to voice their genuine concerns. I am dreading this autumn and winter. I dread what future lies ahead for my children here. I will try to save as much as I can for them and even work further into retirement if I have to.

The highest homelessness figures ever. Not a house to rent in small villages and towns across Ireland. Our president saying it's a housing 'Disaster'.

The Government need to get a handle on these things before they increase our population anymore. This is basic basic basic Economics and should have been done from the outset.

The worse thing Michael Martin ever said was that we weren't putting a Cap on refugees coming here. What an absolute idiotic thing to say.

Everything has a snapping point and we are wayyyy beyond that.

haha.. sorry.. but you're going to have to get used to it from that poster (and a few others).

I think it was something to do with the local authorities overriding the Red Cross, then realising how big the job actually is and giving it back to the Red Cross in recent times.

A big problem with a lot of what is offered is the location. No point in putting refugees in rural areas with no transport for school, work etc. Also, getting suitable people for houseshares is difficult. If it goes tits up, who gets the blame?

Since the start of this conflict, I’ve seen a wide range of people, from the good, to the bad to the downright nightmares. Just like our own people, there are some that shouldn’t be placed in decent peoples homes. It’s a juggling act.

So, reach out to your TD's and express your concerns, with suggestions of what to do. They're the ones that can change things.

Voicing concerns here on Boards will likely accomplish nothing, but feel free to express your opinions and you'll occasionally be challenged to back up any facts you post, like "not a house to rent." Plenty available out here in a tourist area.

“Oh wait, Maryanne hasn’t opened her home.”

I think that asking anyone to share a couch with a retired greyhound is asking a bit much🤣. Apart from the greyhounds, I live in a very rural area and a car would be a necessity. I volunteer two mornings a week instead.

Yep I agree some are not as suitable as others . The flat I referred to is in a beautiful town with all amenities close by . Within walking distance of bus and DART . Room for a couple with one or two kids or a mother and granny with two kids. Having offered this in March my friend got a call from Red Cross last week ( mid August ) asking would she take a single male aged 30 !!

The RC lady from was surprised when they said No as it that would be a complete waste of her offered space .

The Red Cross has had time to figure this out and that is what they came up with ? Its absolutely scandalous that no one in this country was actually paid to .take this emergency on and deal with it . We needed a task force to sort out payments and benefits etc so that refugees didnt end up with more disposable income than families and pensioners etc . This very fact is causing a lot of resentment out there which is fully understandable . A refugee in a hotel with three meals a day and no bills does not need the kind of financial support they are receiving and a task force should have been set up to sort all that out .While we offer that kind of benefit we encourage financial migrants who are taking up space for genuine refugees . We now have a situation where some who came for the benefits are in hotels while genuine refugees who need our care are in tents

The public all know this and are beginning to be resentful of this as problems are beginning to arise affecting their lives

I’m hearing excuses Maryanne. Somebody fleeing conflict would appreciate that couch. You have the space. Step up and do your bit.

Ever the humanitarian Hamachi, demanding others do something while you have no intention of doing anything yourself, besides complaining about people asking other people to do something… 😁

I hope we will do more to help in the future too. Maybe this is a turning point for Ireland 💪.

I don't see how we are sacrificing everything? That seems incredibly exaggerated to me unless, have you given up your primary home and all possessions and savings to help the Ukranian's and somehow sacrificed your family and friends too?

The help is voluntary, the government that we elected has decided what help to give. I have seen some people squibbling about the quantity, yes maybe we could save a few million out of the billions by making some people more miserable. Has anyone lived in a hotel for work? Imagine living in one for months. Not something I'd wish on anyone.
