Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Interesting stage today. Expect Trek to put some pressure on towards the end of this big climb to see if they can drop the other sprinters. A test for Sam too. I wouldn't expect him to still be in the Peleton if said pressure occurs but can he get back on once they are over the top? Mads will be the favourite but yet again Fred Wright is in the break and who would begrudge him a win? He may have chosen the wrong stage to try though as Trek seem to be all in for this one. Otherwise it looks like Bike Exchange are riding for Groves so he must fancy his chances of getting up this climb too. So break, reduced sprint or all back together by the end?

Larry Warbasse was predicting Sam for today on the cycling podcast. Sam looking better than Chris froome at the minute.

I'm surprised that nobody is talking about the likes of Nibali and Higuita who can put on a pace on the climb and are serious going downhill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,508 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Its not a steep enough downhill, and is 70k long, will be a reduced sprint from the break/peloton who werent dropped

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

I suppose it depends on the downhill gradient and how technical it is.

no sign of Sam Bennett at the back there anyway. Still a while to go up this climb though...fingers crossed he hangs in there

Less than 4 km to go until the summit and Sam is still safely in the middle of the peloton. All is going very well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It'll be great if Sam gets over the top in the peloton. He'll have plenty of time to recover then.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

This could backfire badly on Mads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭De Bhál

damn, slipping off the back now with a km to go, hopefully won't burn up too much energy getting back in

Should be OK, plenty of time to get back in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,457 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Given that Trek will pretty much have nobody to drive the peloton after they reach the summit, hopefully the tempo will slow down and Sam will get back in.

Is Sam literally the only rider dropped?

That's what the live ticker says

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭De Bhál

nah, in the last shot there was about 7 there with him, looked like 2 Bora teammates and a few other teams

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

No, loads dropped but they'll get back on, very close to the back of the peloton now. He can sit at the back for a long time, there no danger of anything happening up front. He'll hopefully have a full train come the finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,457 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

The Vuelta tracker has Sam back in with the peloton

The views down in this valley are unreal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭De Bhál

Sam well within the peloton now.

Yeah, it's on my bucket list to do a Giro, Tour and Vuelta journey, by car not cycling!

I plan to start that in four years time and do one per year.

Points available for the intermediate sprint: 20-17-15-13-11-10 points

Five riders in the breakaway, so one rider from the peloton will get 10 points.

If Pedersen gets those 10 points, he goes into virtual green jersey

EDIT: The info regarding the intermediate points was from inrng.com and seems to be incorrect. The points available were 20-17-15-13-10, so the breakaway took all of them.

water levels on that lake a while back look very low

Bora chasing the break now so Sam must be confident he can do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

They're cutting it close. Reckon the break holds on.

Well if the peloton don't catch them, I hope Fred Wright wins!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,508 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

They're going to start looking at each other and be caught in the last 200m aren't they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭De Bhál

my heart rates going up...break looks good, unfortunately

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 25,167 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Peloton aIf the timing is correct it is hard to see them being caught at this stage

well done Sam, won the bunch sprint

How far back did the points go today?

I thought Herrada was complaining about the finish not celebrating 😅

As good as a win for Sam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,066 ✭✭✭✭neris

    Jesus that was some finish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

Good result overall for Sam....didn't see him increasing the gap in the green jersey comp today.

Fred Wright really needs to learn from his mistakes!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,457 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

    30-25-22-19-17-15-13-11-9-7-6- 5-4-3-2 points (I'm sure it's correct this time)

    So Sam got 15 points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

Pedersen would have expected to gain points on Sam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,617 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

Another 6 points onto his lead in the green jersey.

well played by bora today, didnt go into the red much and increased their lead a small bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,051 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Trek blew up trying to drop Sam and didn't have enough left to catch the break.

Was probably the best tactic it just didn't work out for them.

100%, a stage win is nice but this was far better in regards the green jersey, same increase in points while costign your competitors alot of energy. I have really poor internet at the minute but it looked like only one Bora roder put anything into catching the break (it was so grainy I couldn't even tell who it was).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Fred's not prepared to lose and the other riders have learned to take advantage of that.

When they crested the mountain I'de say Sam would have been happy to be a place or 2 behind Mads in the sprint so that was a great comeback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭happytramp

Funny, assumed pedersen would have more in the tank on a stage like today's.... Didn't seem able to do much at the end. Was he not to pushed? Or are we starting to see the effects of the tour in his legs? Either way seems to bode reasonably well for Sam.

Yep. Arguably one of the nicest climbs in the area. Doesn't get the attention of the likes of the Angliru or Lagos de Covadonga but it's really worth checking out

Those are some spectacular shots !!!!!

They do it very little justice!

San Glorio holds a place in my heart, it was what really started my love affair with Northern Spain. Watching the Vuelta on tv in 2014 when the race went up through there on the way to La Camperona, just being blown away by the views . Convinced the darling wife to take a look and the next year we went over there for a 2 week holiday and several times since ( currently trying to sneak a quick trip over again in a few weeks 🤞)
